Pastor Notes I t is an ancient tradition in the Church to commemorate saints
on the anniversary of their death because that was the day on which they were born into eternal life. We celebrate the same reality in our funeral liturgies and on the anniversaries of the death of our own loved ones. In Mary’s case, her birthday into eternal life has been celebrated on August 15th for approximately 1500 years. Throughout most of this time, the Christian faithful believed that both Mary’s body and soul were taken up into glory. This is the same glory that we believe all Christians await on the last day. Her perfect cooperation with God in their lifetime and her honored place as mother of the Messiah made her the first to enjoy the fullness of the Resurrection. In answer to a century of calls to proclaim this belief as a doctrine of the Church, Pope Pius XII Mary’s Assumption as doctrine in 1950. A long standing tradition here at Assumption Parish is to conduct our Picnic in conjunction with this great feast of Mary, our patroness. After a change of format, we will observe this tradition with grand festivity. We cordially invite all of you to take part in the celebration. Take some time during the weekend to celebrate with your fellow parishioners and share fellowship with them. There are many wonderful activities planned and delicious food prepared for your enjoyment. August 15th is the actual Feast of the Assumption. Mass will be celebrated on the 14th or Vigil of The Assumption at 4:00 and 7:00pm. The 7:00 Mass will be a Solemn High Mass celebrated according to the extraordinary form. On August 15th the Mases are at 6:30 and 9:00am; noon and 7:00pm Let us pray that our Heavenly Mother extends her loving care upon us as a parish; that we may grow closer to her Son, Jesus each and every day and receive blessings on our families. God Bless!
A S S C Once again, we are collecting basic school supply items for distribution at the Thea Bowman Center and for our children in Haiti. Bins will be in the back of the church through Labor Day weekend. Basic items such as pens, rulers, solar calculators, maps, folders, glue sticks, paper, colored pencils, notebooks, and quadrille type composition books may be placed in bins in back of church.
Soccer balls, ball pumps, and jump ropes are real treasurers. Your thoughtful donation is always appreciated!!
Many blessings. Members of Hands and Hearts with Haiti and
Human Care Committees.
A C Come to me when you’re feeling bad about yourself. Come to me even when you think you’re too busy. Come especially when you’re distracted. Come when you are depressed or anx-ious or lonely. Come, even if you think you can do something without me. Then close your eyes and take a deep breath and you can trust that I am pouring my blessings on you – precise-ly because you came to me. For more information on Eucharistic Adoration please contact Marcia Kaiser at 440-503-5593. Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

2. What aspect of my former way of life do I need to put away? 3. In what ways do we “become” the Body and Blood of Christ
for others? 4. I satisfy my spiritual hunger through …? 5. To which do I give more attention: “food that perishes” or
“the food that endures for eternal life”?

D ’ C So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed Himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God…” Ephesians 5:1-2 Jesus gives His life so we can have new life. The bread of life is the bread of self-sacrifice. By eating this bread we take upon our-selves Jesus’ life of self-giving, sacrifice, and suffering. This is a life long journey. A disciple’s heart is a life-long goal to attain. It doesn’t happen overnight, in a snap of your fingers, but requires time, patience and self-giving. Daily choosing to recognize your gifts, to use your gifts, and returning them to God with gratitude by serving others is a journey of many small steps, sometimes very painful steps. The Paschal Mystery of Jesus, His dying and rising is the path to eternal life. He is your example. The pain and suffering, the giving and sharing of self, the long, hard jour-ney is not so attractive, but the end result is a rich and satisfying harvest. We Americans, by and large, are not long-suffering by nature. We like things to happen fast, quick, and with little effort. Micro-waves have made meal preparation a matter of minutes. We eat it on the run. We get irritated when the lines at the grocery check-out are all three deep. We have high speed internet and instanta-neous communication 24/7. We can’t wait to see who the next overnight success will be. This fast –paced accelerated way of life often goes against the goals that are accomplished through a lifetime of commitment, perseverance, and self-giving. Fidelity to one’s spouse, family, friendship, career, physical growth, spiritual conversion-these are all life-long endeavors not well suited to a fast, hurry-up mentality. What can we do? Look to our Scrip-tures, they call us to reflect on how we use our gifts, not on how fast things happen. Discipleship is a Way of Life that calls us to be imitators of Christ. “So be imitators of God, as beloved chil-dren, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed Himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God…” The question is “Will you do it?” IT TAKES TIME!!
