First Presbyterian Church, Twin Falls Idaho Stewardship in May When we hear the word “stewardship,” our thoughts go straight to money. Stewardship is connected to the season when members are asked to indicate their level of financial support for the church’s ministry and mission during the coming year. Although we may add “time and talent” to our stewardship program, everyone knowns that “treasure” is the name of the game. It may come as a surprise, however, to discover that the New Testament does not use the words stewardship and steward to talk about money. In a letter to the Christians in Corinth, Paul asks them to think of the apostles as “servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries (1 Cor. 4:1). For Paul, the mysteries of God are found in the proclamation of the good news of what God has done and is doing in Christ. “When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:1-2). Indeed, for Paul “the knowledge of God’s mystery is Christ himself” (Col. 2:2). In the New Testament, “mystery” is not something “mysterious, unknowable, and secret,” but rather the depth of riches and wisdom and knowledge of God made known in Jesus Christ. The more we know about God’s mysteries, the more there is to know! We are not apostles, but like Paul we have been sent to proclaim the good news of what God has done and is doing in Christ. And so, like Paul, we are “servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries.” In this deep sense, every time is stewardship season, a time when everyone must ask how we exercise stewardship of the proclamation that Christ is crucified and risen, a proclamation that is the best possible news in a world of need. Stewardship of our money is easy, in comparison to our stewardship of God’s mysteries. How will you live more fully into the gift(s) that have been entrusted to you? The cabin that the church owned in the south hills was sold for $30,000.00 in 2003. Paperwork still needs to be filled out to get our name disassociated with this property. Robin did research on the current status. We will have Bob Parkinson as church treasurer sign the necessary documents, saying it was sold October 1st of 2003. Rene found what was done with the proceeds of that sale in the annual report. Continuing Education Reaching People Under 40 While Keeping People Over 60: Being Church for All Generations A discussion was held on Part I. Please read Part II and how you would respond to the “Coaching Questions” at the end of each chapter. Be ready to share the comments, questions, or responses do you have to the first half of this book. Confession and Pardon was done responsively. New Business Shirley moved to approve the baptism of Aubrey and Declan Sharp (Children of Jordan & Nick Sharp). From the Choir Loft The Chancel Choir will be providing music for worship until Sunday, May 22nd, after which the group goes on summer hiatus. We appreciate the compliments and encouragement you provide as we strive to present an anthem each Sunday. As choir director, I would ask you to prayerfully consider becoming a member of the group when we resume rehearsals in September. Don’t assume that we ‘wouldn’t want your voice,’ or that ‘you can’t carry a tune.’ Sometimes, we hear these kinds of comments addressed to us as children, and imagine them to still be true for us as adults. A favorite adage of mine has always been, ‘Imagine how quiet the forest would be if only the best birds were to sing.’ We are fortunate here at First Presbyterian Church of Twin Falls in that we have a chancel choir. Many churches are disbanding their choirs in favor of more informal congregational singing; an anthem as such is less common. One only needs to think of the Magic Valley Chorale, Magic Chords barbershop ensemble, The Dilettantes, and the large school choirs in our area to realize that all sorts of people, with all sorts of abilities, LOVE to sing! Our Chancel Choir rehearses for only one hour each week, from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. You are not auditioned, nor do we take attendance. Singers are in choir as frequently as schedules permit – and we realize that life sometimes takes us away from our regular church worship on Sunday.

We need people in our church family to become a part of the Chancel Choir if we are to remain an integral part of worship. Please join us! Talk to any choir member for more information.
