From the Pastor’s Desk

The Visible World of Creation Pope Francis recently asked us to consider caring for the environment on the level of corporal and spiritual works of mercy. God created the visible world in all its richness, diversity, and order. Scripture presents the work of the Creator symbolically as a succession of six days of divine “work,” concluded by the “rest” of the seventh day. On the subject of creation, the sacred texts reach the truths revealed by God for our salvation, permitting us to “recognize the inner nature, the value, and the ordering of the whole of creation to the praise of God” (Vat II, LG 36-2). Nothing exists that does not owe its existence to God, the Creator. The world began when God’s word drew it out of nothingness; all existent beings, all of nature, and all of human history are rooted in this primordial event, the very genesis by which the world was constituted and time began. Each creature poses its own particular goodness and perfection. For each one of the works of the “six days” it is said: “And God saw that it was good.” “By the very nature of creation, material being is endowed with its own stability, truth, and excellence, its own order and laws” (Vat II, GS 36-1). Each of the various creatures, willed in its own being, reflects in its own way a ray of God’s infinite wisdom and goodness. Humankind must therefore respect the particular goodness of every creature, to avoid any disordered use of things which would be in contempt of the Creator and would bring disastrous consequences for human beings and their environment. God wills the interdependence of creatures. The sun and the moon, the cedar and the little flower, the eagle and the sparrow; the spectacle of their diversities and inequalities tell us that no creature is self-sufficient. Creatures exist only in dependence on each other, to complete each other in the service of each other. The beauty of the universe: The order and harmony of the created world result from the diversity of beings and from the relationships which exist among them. Humankind discovers them progressively as the laws of nature. They call forth the admiration of scholars. The beauty of creation reflects the infinite beauty of the Creator and ought to inspire the respect and submission of humankind’s intellect and will. All of us should respect and care for creation. The hierarchy of creatures is expressed by the order of the “six days”, from the less perfect to the more perfect. God loves all God’s creatures and takes care of each one, even the sparrow. Nevertheless, Jesus said: “You are of more value than many sparrows,” or again: “Of how much more value is a person than a sheep” (Lk 12:6-7; Mk 12:12). Humans are the summit of the Creator’s work, as the inspired account expresses by clearly distinguishing the creation of man and woman from that of other creatures. Woman and Man are created in the image and likeness of God; we have will and intellect. We can figure out the truth and choose to pursue the truth. Pope Francis is correct, and we should do all in our power to protect and preserve our environment while admiring all creation and worshipping our God, the Creator. Next week: more on creation and how Sunday (Sabbath) worship is connected to all of creation.

In Christ, Rev. Peter John Sheehan, Pastor

Time/Talent/Treasure. Jesus healed ten lepers. Only one (10%) came back to say thank you. I, too, have received many blessings from the Lord—indeed, all I am and all I have are gifts. How and how often have I remembered to thank Him?

Religious Education

Religious education classes for grades 1-10 are held at St. Patrick’s Church on Wednesdays from 6-7 pm. For parents with younger children, your children’s formal religious education starts in grade 1. This first year is very important to expose them to their church community. The lessons they learn in grade 1 are the stepping stones they need to be properly prepared for grade 2. All students preparing for the Sacraments (First Holy Communion, grades 1 & 2, and Confirmation, grades 9 & 10) are required to sign in each week at Mass. A notebook may be found at the entrance of each church for this purpose. If you have any question or concerns, please call Kerri (401-568-5600, Monday-Friday, 8 am – 12 pm). Combined Parish Fundraiser – Dried Fruit & Nuts Do you like to bake for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays? Do you enjoy an afternoon or evening snack? If so, you would certainly benefit from ordering from our combined parish fundraiser. All orders must be paid in full at the time orders are placed. Orders are due no later than October 26. Orders will be ready for pick-up on November 12 & 13. Order forms are available in the rear of both churches. Please feel free to share with your family and friends. Thank you for supporting this fundraiser. A Note from the Bulletin Staff – October is Pastor Appreciation Month. On behalf of St. Joseph and St. Patrick parishes, thank you, Fr. Peter John Sheehan, for all you do!
