WESTLAKE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
I am in a minority… I like the Easter story in
the Gospel of Mark. In Mark’s oldest form, it
ends with the 8th verse of the 16th chapter. The women
leave the tomb, and they say nothing because they were
afraid.
Clearly at some point someone said something to some-
one about the resurrection. I have always sensed that
the Gospel of Mark lets us know that now the responsi-
bility is upon us to tell the good news.
If people are going to know that God was in Christ, of-
fering grace and mercy, it will only happen if we make it
happen.
We try to do too much based on other people’s experi-
ence and not enough on how we have been changed.
We want to say too much about what God did some-
place else in the past and not enough about what God is
doing for us.
Sometimes our emphasis in on what we expect God to
do in the future. My sense is that God will act as re-
markably in the future as God has in the present.
The Easter question ultimately is, where is Christ living
today? A serious consideration during the time of re-
newal and reflection of Christ in our lives.
With God’s grace,
Rev. John

Sunday Worship at 8:15, 10:00 and 11:28 a.m.
Most people come to church for the first time because they were invited by a neighbor,
friend, or acquaintance.
There are many special worship services and family events this Holy Week for you to share your church home with someone
who doesn’t have a church.
On Easter, we would encourage anyone who is able to attend at the 8:15 a.m. or 11:28 a.m. services to make room in the pews for visitors at 10:00 a.m.
Please join us!

Legacy Giving Corner
Many gifts over time have established the Westlake UMC Legacy Funds with the ability to provide the church with non-
operating funds to support above and beyond ministry. Below is a summary of Fund activity for 2014 as presented to
the Leadership Council in March. Legacy Committee: Jennifer Howell, Kim Linger, Ellie Peiffer and John Rife (chair)
Please note…
It will be proposed at Spring Church Confer-
ence that the current term of all church offi-
cers be extended by 6 months. This will ac-
complish two things. First, it will put administrative
officers on the calendar year which will eliminate
the sense of a summertime lull between old officers
ending their term and new officers coming on
board. This has been a consideration for some time
and was already in the works. Second, doing it this
year means that the Staff-Parish Relations Committee
that was in place when Pastor Mollie Brown was intro-
duced will be in place as she begins her ministry here.

ME, MYSELF, AND LIES: A THOUGHT CLOSET MAKEOVER
Mondays from 12:45—2:00 p.m.
Open to New Members — Childcare Available
Words are powerful—especially the words women
speak to themselves. All too often, what they say to
themselves when they lie in bed at night or look in the
mirror in the morning is not even close to the words
God wants them to speak to their souls. According to
the author, Jennifer Rothschild, what we think about of-
ten has a ripple effect on nearly every area of our lives.
Join us Monday afternoons for a divine thought closet
makeover. Wear or bring an old pair of shoes! Please let
the office know if you will need childcare (440) 871-3088

Thanks be to God!
“What do you say?” And the parent waits for the classi-
cally coached response of “thank you” from their child
for the toy, for a turn, for the present, for a door held
open, for a ride home, for permission to go out without
chaperones, and the list goes on. We role model the
behavior exchanging thanks and welcomes like trading
cards when they are little, and like reminders of an audi-
ble world beyond lol and brb as they grow-up.
Scholars’ researching gratitude found correlation be-
tween children’s levels of gratitude and higher grades,
social integration, lower levels of envy and depression.
If feeling fortunate is good for kids then imagine express-
ing gratitude to God.
What do YOU say?
“For from Him and through Him and to Him are all
things…” (Romans 11:36).
WHAT do you say?
We sell our kids on thanking a sibling for giving back
that sweatshirt they weren’t even allowed to borrow.
We make sure they say thanks for a gift of Harry Pot-
ter’s wand when they wanted Captain America’s shield.
Our kids may think we are Sergeant McCrazy of Crazy-
town. But if we want to be consistent, if we want our
children to take home Sunday’s message of “thanks be
to God” don’t we need to let Jesus live a little on our
sleeve not just in our heart?
It is easy to blast blindly into burrows of busy, busy,
busy. Yes, getting everyone AND hot food onto the
table some meals seems more complex than a safe
sword swallowing act. Heck in my own head, I claim
rights going “Old Testament” with Birkat Hamazon (or
blessings of nourishment/grace after the meal) so we
maintain saying grace daily even if it occurs when one
small voice asks to be excused from the table vs. that
elusive moment everything is set and all sit peacefully
down. One little friend said recently, there really isn’t
time. But when you have a stack of gifts at a birthday
party, does that response “fly”. We have a bounty of
blessings. We can find time. We can say, “thanks be to
God from whom all blessings flow” or with a bowed
head and hands held around the table say simply “thank
you, Amen.” Saying grace over a meal creates a special
time for learned behaviors of reflection and gratitude.
What DO you say?
God is great, all the time! Thanks be to God!
CALLING THE SUPER FUN TEACHERS,
CAMPERS, AND PARENTS EXTRAORDINAIRE Sunday, April 26th, 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Christian Education needs your help! Parents of Sunday
schoolers and congregants coming and going may have
noticed we love using the church property when the
weather is good. Let’s talk games! What do your kids’
love, what have you seen work, and what do you think
we could try? Sunday school curriculum writers aren’t
fooling teachers like Mrs. Mayer. Lesson games are re-
cess/P.E./camp games with roles and goals morphed to
support the lesson. We can cover the morphing part.
But there are certainly more options to manipulate than
the sharks and minnows game. Yes. We need teachers
committed to our mission who love children. We need
to support those teachers with faith forming lessons. We
can also keep challenging ourselves to go big, and make
our Sunday time with children so engaging and exciting
they are hopping into a parent’s car to join us! You can
help! If you have ideas but cannot join us, please contact
Carol Ryan.

4th grade through 12th grade and wish to be considered
for a scholarship, please submit your camper’s name

ASK PATRICIA….
by Patricia Whited-Stineman, OSHIIP Medicare Counselor
If you are an OPERS Medicare retiree,
changes are coming in 2016.
Question: I am an OPERS Medicare retiree and will be
losing my group health insurance in 2016. I have ques-
tions about moving to Medicare and using an OPERS
Connector. Can an OSHIIP volunteer help me review
my options? I received a 2016 OPERS Connector Readi-
ness kit, and I am confused.
Answer: Yes! OPERS has partnered with OSHIIP on
the 2016 changes so that OSHIIP volunteers can help
OPERS retirees become Connector Ready.
Let’s review what is happening with OPERS Medicare
retirees:
As of 2016, OPERS retirees over the age of 65
must shift to the Medicare system and will select
their plans from the Medicare options. OPERS will
fund a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA), that
provides tax free reimbursement for qualified medi-
cal expenses. The average allowance, (if retired be-
fore January 1, 2015), is estimated at $337/month.
OPERS has contracted with a third party, OneEx-
change, to provide phone support for the retiree.
The One Exchange advisors are referred to as Con-
nectors.
Retirees MUST USE THE CONNECTOR to sign up
during Open Enrollment 2015 in order to receive
their allowance.
The Connector can help a spouse, however, the
spousal allowance will not be available beginning in
2018.

THE MESSENGER
Did you know that the church has an indoor labyrinth
which is used for meditation and silent prayer? It is
available for all to use on Good Friday from 12:00 to
3:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.
Labyrinths can be thought of as symbolic forms of
pilgrimage. Walking the labyrinth may help some
achieve a contemplative state of
prayer. Also, walking the labyrinth
can introduce us to another type of
prayer… prayer in motion, instead
of prayer in absolute stillness.
While some cathedrals have labyrinths laid in
stone on their floors or grounds, our labyrinth is a
temporary set-up across the floor of Fellowship
Hall. We walk the labyrinth in silence, respecting
one another's private time in prayer. Walk in
prayer for less than a half an hour or pause, kneel,
mediate on the path for a few hours. Similar to
golf, others may just respectfully “pray through.”
Come, pray, and connect. If you anticipate a
need for assistance to walk the labyrinth, please
contact Carol Ryan via the church office (440)
871-3088.

Directory Updates Needed!
We have acquired a new and user-friendly data-
base for the church. This means it is the perfect
time to update addresses, email, and phone num-
bers! Please take a moment and send us any up-
dates—particularly if anything has changed in the
last two years (yes, years!).
And still taking digital pictures of your family (be it
just you or your whole brood!). Don't be left out!
You can still send the office a digital photo to be
included in the new directory addition. Email your
family photo: [email protected]
