Pastor’s 2 Cents From: Fr. Jim DeBruycker
Some things never change; we hear what we want to hear. Paul preached to the Thessaloni-
ans what he thought: that Jesus’ coming was imminent, so be prepared. What some of the
Thessalonians heard was: Jesus is coming so we might as well drop everything and have
a good time. In today’s excerpt from his letter we hear him trying to talk them back to work.
As time went by, Paul would have to amend his letters and warn his followers that his estima-
tion of Jesus’ return time may need to be corrected…and that moral behavior is good for the
soul, no matter how close or far away Jesus is.
Every generation has seen the end of times reflected in their history whether it was the Mongol
horde, the Moslem conquest of the Holy Land, the bubonic plague, any number of volcanic
eruptions, endless dictatorships…not to mention the Reformation which pointed to the end
times.
Of course, each of these events was used by demagogues to scare us to do stupid things
in order to seize power, be it the witch hunts of the middle ages, Jewish pogroms of every
generation, or the fear of anyone who was an ‘alien.’
As we come to the end of the church year we too get to hear stories of the end times. In
particular, the fall of the Jewish temple and temple culture. The Romans destroyed the temple
in 70 AD and most of the gospels were probably written after this event. One can only imagine
the impact it had on this small group of Jews. Their cultic center was destroyed and their own
community no longer wanted them in their synagogues.
It is then they remembered what Jesus had said about end times. Someone will always be
whining about something, pointing to painful events surrounding them. Guess what? There
will always be painful events. Our job is to get past them and be the hope we are called to be.
The promise is that if you do this, God will always give you the voice to proclaim and do the
right thing.
