MESSIAH MESSENGER - AUG 2017 PAGE 1
PASTOR’S PAGE by Pastor Scott Peterson
Dear Friends of the Living Messiah,
WHAT A SUMMER THIS HAS BEEN AT MLC!!! In June and July…
Music Camp was seasoned by the ten children with us from the Christ Kiswahili Lutheran mission in Nashville. Lots of other guest children joined in rocking to a new musical based on Acts 1-10, entitled Rockin' with the Rock.
LEAP ACADEMY, a mission in Horizon Elementary School in Madison, began this summer helped by the initiative and support of MLC. LEAP builds a foundation of supporting relationships helping students develop their potential for leadership.
Vacation Bible School: Bible stories, crafts, singing, mission projects, and games delivered the theme of God's Gifts of Love to 20 energetic kids Pre-K to Grade 5.
Wedding: William Strand (son of Stephen & Claire) married Kayla Cornwell on July 8.
The Baptism of Ashlyn Juul Palmer, granddaughter of Don and Lizzie, was July 16.
Senior Youth Mission Trip: Members of the Senior Youth traveled to Jacksonville, FL July 15-21 under the leadership of Sara Galyon, MLC's new Director of Youth and Education Ministries.
WHAT IS NEXT? In August…
Rally Day is August 6. Sunday School classes will start again, the Senior Youth will tell about their mission trip, Sara Galyon will preach, and we will celebrate with the “best wurst” picnic lunch ever.
Backpack Blessing will also be a part of both worship services on August 6.
Confirmation Classes will start Wednesday, August 9. Nine students ages 13-21 in the Second Year Class will prepare to affirm the Christian faith they entered in Baptism.
Baptism: Helen Elissa Hopkin, daughter of Diedre and Daniel, will be Baptized on August 20.
The Blessing of Kits and Quilts will also be celebrated on August 20 before they go out to people around the world. Did you know that MLC sends the most pounds of kits and quilts to Lutheran World Relief of any of the 161 congregations of the SE Synod? We do!
WHAT'S MORE? This Fall...
The 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation will be celebrated at MLC through adult classes based on these writings of Martin Luther: The Freedom of a Christian, The Babylonian Captivity of the Church, and Luther's Large Catechism. These classes will take place during the Sunday School hour (9:45-10:45 a.m.) and on Wednesday evenings (6:30-7:30 p.m.). Let's learn what we believe as Lutherans so we can share God's good news through our lives.
Our New Lunches for Learning School, Jesus Tadeo Flores in Honduras, will receive me as a visitor in September. MLC adopted this small school to provide daily lunches because they seemed to have the greatest needs. Thanks to your generosity, lunches have been provided since February!
“WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?” is a frequent question in Luther's Small Catechism. Look at what is written above! I believe the clear message is that the Spirit of our risen Lord (AKA the Holy Spirit) is vibrantly at work among us and through us. Thanks be to God!
Pastor Scott Peterson
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone,

Replacement of Sanctuary Piano
At its June 8th
meeting the Church Council authorized setting up a fund to re-ceive gifts toward replacing the Sanctuary piano. (Rationale for Replacement vs. Refurbishment is in the July newsletter and posted on the bulletin board.) The cost of such an instrument will probably be on the order of $25 K, possibly more. We can attempt to sell the Baldwin and hope to recoup on the order of $3 - 5 K.
Offerings and pledges designated for “Sanctuary Piano” will go in this fund. This fund now totals over $14,200.00! If you have questions please talk to Lois Graff, John Shriver, or another member of the Church Council.
Proceeds from Messiah’s annual Dinner Theater Fundraiser on September 16th will support the Sanctuary Piano fund. So get a group together, purchase tick-ets, and enjoy a fun evening for a good cause! More information on page 7!

Hymn of the Month “Earth and All Stars”
The tune and text of this familiar hymn were written in the 20th
century. Tune composer David N. Johnson was an American organist, composer, educator, choral clinician, and lecturer. Educated at Wartburg Seminary and Trinity Lu-theran Seminary, Dr. Herbert Brokering was a Lutheran pastor, author, poet, playwright, hymn writer, and speaker. Pastor Brokering described the writing of the words in this way: “I tried to gather into a hymn of praise the many fac-ets of life which emerge in the life of community. So there are the references to building, nature, learning, family, war, festivity. Seasons, emotions, death and resurrection, bread, wine, water, wind, sun, spirit...have made great im-pressions on my imagination.”
[God] has done marvelous things. I too will praise him with a new song!

Sr. Youth Find “God Moments” Through Work and Play at TEAMeffort in Jacksonville, Florida
Ten of Messiah’s senior high students went to the TEAMeffort youth ministry camp located in Jacksonville, Florida. Claire Strand and Larry Ryan attended as chaperones on the six day trip which was organized and led by Sara Galyon, MLC’s Youth and Christian Edu-cation Director. The group left Messiah on Saturday, July 15 and returned on Friday, July 21st. Several youth wrote about their experiences on the newly created MLC Sr. Youth blog. A few more will present a temple talk on their shared experiences on Rally Day (August 6th). Thank you to everyone who helped support this summer’s mis-sion trip! ...We talked about our theme for the summer which is “scaffolding.” Scaffolding is a temporary structure on the outside of a building used by workers when they’re building, repairing, or cleaning a building. This relates to God because God is strong and steady and we can lean on him whenever we need it. He surrounds us while he works on us. - Excerpt of Bridie Ryan’s 7/16 Blog Post

Sara Galyon Hired As Messiah’s Dirctor of Youth & Christian Education Ministries
On Thursday, July 13th, the Messiah Lutheran Church Council approved Sara Galyon as Director of Youth and Christian Education Ministries effective July 1st. The council decision follows the recommendation made by MLC’s Personnel Committee.
Sara joined Messiah in June of 2016 after relocating to the area from
Memphis, TN where she completed her Masters of Arts in Youth
Ministry at Memphis Theological Seminary. Sara was hired as MLC's
Director of Sr. Youth at the end of January, 2017. Her expanded
responsibilities will include programs for Messiah's older elementary
students (grades 3 through 5) and Junior High youth (grades 6 through
8). In addition, she will provide supervision and administration to
Messiah's Sunday School and Vacation Bible School activities, working
in coordination with Sunday School Superintendent, Devonee Woods,
and MLC's Council Representative for Youth and Education, Janell
Zesinger.
"It is a gift to have Sara on staff. " says Zesinger, adding, "Our youth
programs are a vital part of Messiah’s ministries and we are already
seeing the benefit of Sara’s experience and leadership in our Senior
Youth program. We are excited that she will be expanding her work to
all of our youth, to help form and build upon a strong foundation in
Christ for all ages.”
Parents should note the new youth meeting times on page 4!
