4 days. In fact, the quilt is at the long-
arm quilter already! Kathy is truly an
over-achiever !!!
Last month also brought 12 new mem-
bers to our Guild. I heard through the
grapevine our Guild is known as the fun
Guild !!! I am glad others are interested
in our Guild!
Erin Underwood was the last speaker
that I scheduled for the Guild; Donna
Sherk, your Vice President, will now take
over programs. Her first program will
be the August meeting. If you have any
suggestions for speakers, please
let Donna know.
I'll see you all in May. Our auction
should be fabulous! and KEEP ON
QUILTING ( especially DVI quilts).
Patty
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I don't know about you, but
time seems to fly by faster and faster
everyday. Spring certainly took it's time
to get here. But finaly, it has arrived!
Flowers are starting to bloom, and the
earth is coming to life with color. I love
to see all the colorful flowers, green
grass, all the leaves on the trees coming
out and the sky with all the pretty blue
shades. I also enjoy getting out and
cleaning up the yard and listening all the
birds chirping.
If you missed April's meeting, you
missed Erin Underwood's trunk show.
The following day she did a workshop,
Diamond Star. It was great. In fact, I
am trying to get Erin back to do a Satur-
day workshop. Kathy Chickey, who took
the class, had her king size quilt done in
Lebanon, Pennsylvania

President Patty Frazier welcomed all in attendance. Pauline Charles
moved that the minutes from the March meeting be approved and
Debbie Newill seconded. Vicki Nice moved that the treasurer‘s re-
port be approved, and Chris Straka seconded.
Guests tonight were Winnie Heffley, Nancy A. Miller, Katie Faiola
and Lisa Eisner.
New Members are Susan Atkins, Pat Bowlsby, Doris Yorty, Anita
Clagett, Olga Ehrhart, Karen Porr, Ruby Bollinger, Aline Kawaler,
Patricia Krall, Shari Schappell, Ruth Ann Gernert and Ann Reynolds.
Pillowcases The Guild acknowledged Amy Faiola for her work on pil-
lowcases.
Raffle Quilt The Guild sold $1039 in Raffle Quilt tickets at the
Lancaster Quilt Show, and the Raffle Quilt is now hanging at In Stitches fabric shop. In July, it will move to the Quilt Odyssey, held
in Hershey, and volunteers are needed to sell tickets at that show.
Ticket sales for the Raffle Quilt will stop October 22, 2015, and the
winning ticket will be drawn at the Guild quilt show in November. The
2016 Raffle Quilt was made by Maggie Culbert and purchased by the
Guild, and will be ready to go after the current quilt is raffled off.
The 2017 Raffle Quilt will be designed by Trish Geesaman and Sue
Kline. Stay tuned!
Hospice of Lancaster County This organization has asked the Guild
to make a quilt for them, but because of the short notice and our
ongoing project for DVI, we cannot take on this project. However, if
any members are interested in making a quilt for HLC, please contact
Patty.
DVI Quilts Patty pleaded for DVI quilts, as our goal is to make 200
quilts for this organization. Kathy Chickey showed several finished
quilts to motivate members to make a quilt for DVI. Members agreed
that the kits that Kathy makes are welcome, so she will continue
making them for members to use. Several members urged quilters to
peruse the internet for quilt patterns and tutorials.
Day of Caring This DVI workshop is scheduled for April 18, 2015
and members need to sign up if they are attending. Please let Patty
know if you plan to attend so the proper amount of food can be or-
dered. The charge for lunch is $5.
Charm Squares Sue Bechtel won the extra charms.
Block of the Month Marie Oberst won the Blocks of the Month.
Next month‘s block is Friendship Star Variation. The background
should be tan, and a medium color can be used for the design. The
pattern is in the current newsletter.
Ways and Means Basket This month‘s basket is called ―Asian
Spring‖ and includes fabrics, books and tools. The winner of the bas-
ket was Barbara Kuhlangel.
Auction The Guild Auction will be held at the May meeting. Rosemary
Stieg asked for help in setting up the auction, and if you are able to
help, please contact her. She will be sending out a detailed request
for help via e-mail.

Some
examples:
It‘s time to get our flower beds ready for summer. Not as much time for quilting but we can
go outside without taking five minutes to get bundled up. We received our refund from Camp
Swatara for the cancellation of our spring retreat. Our refund is $450. Our deposit to the camp to re-
serve our weekend was $500 but they retained $50 as a cancellation fee. As you can see from my Treas-
urer‘s report we are doing well with our raffle ticket sales. Going to the Lancaster Quilt show really helped
our sales. Thank you Sue Kline and all the ladies who volunteered to sit at our raffle table. If you have any questions about the Treasurer report, please contact me at [email protected] or 717-272-7262.
The weather is finally changing and the flowers are blooming. Hurray.
There will be less time for sewing since we all have yard work that needs to be done. I'm
actually working on that right now and my body is letting me know its not used to it. It's saying "go sew"!
I hope you are all committed to our DVI challenge and have a quilt ready for the back of your chair at the
June pot-luck dinner. It should be spectacular to see all the beautiful colors decorating the room.
There will be a pin given to any member participating in this years DVI challenge.
Pins for participating will be:
1 -5 quilts will earn a bronze pin
6-10 quilts will earn a silver pin
11-15 quilts will earn a gold pin
16 plus will earn a platinum pin
I'm hoping to continue preparing fabric for more DVI quilts as well as pillowcases.
Be on the look out at the table in the back. Sorry, there is no batting left.

Secretary‘s Minutes CONT
Happy May! I would like to start by thanking the ladies of the Berks Guild who made and donated
172 pillowcases that I happily delivered to the children‘s hospital in April along with our own guild‘s
donation of 213. Of course many, many ―THANKS‖ goes out to our own guild members who continue to sup-
port the pillowcase project month after month after month. I am always happy to hear your inspirational
stories about how you enjoy sewing the pillowcases and how you share our pillowcase project with your friends
(who aren‘t even members of the guild) and then they want to know more about it and that helps spread the
word which in turn helps our monthly count grow.
I am also inspired when I get to share news of the wonderful happenings at the hospital because of the
pillowcases, such as the following story that was submitted by a child life specialist:
A 10 year old girl had a stroke and could not speak. The nurse was delivering pillowcases and asked
which one she would like and the Mom replied ―she always likes Winnie the Pooh‖. She was given a
Winnie the Pooh pillowcase and with that, the child spoke her first word: ―Pooh‖ …..…
She‘s now in speech therapy.‖ Amazing what a pillowcase can do.
Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart"
-- Winnie the Pooh
So, let‘s keep those sewing machines humming so that we can continue
to help keep the smiles on the faces of the children
………...one pillowcase at a time.

No matter what we all think, warm weather will arrive and with that, the May flowers, June
weddings and backyard BBQs. Soon our annual June Pot Luck Dinner at the June meeting will be here and
what a culinary delight it will be. Because of our large numbers, this year will be a little different.
In order to have a well executed plan, there will be a sign up sheet next to the membership list at the May
meeting. If you plan on attending the June meeting, please check the sheet. All we need is a slash mark, no
name is required. This will give us a better estimate of numbers so that appropriate tables and place settings
can be arranged. As in years past this is a POT LUCK: bring whatever you desire...salads, veggies, main dish,
dessert. We are also asking that you bring your own drink. If you forget a drink there are machines in the
back that you may purchase a drink.
If you will not be at the May meeting but plan on attending in June please send a short email to me.
Thanks so much.

For those of you like me, sadly getting older and having a harder time threading
needles...I‘d like to tell you about a product I found. I have no personal interest in
this product except that it is awesome and it works! A year ago at the AQS show in
Lancaster, there was a booth on one of the upper levels called Spiral Eye Needles;
She was hard to miss as there was a 3 foot spool and needle at the entrance to her
booth. Her needles had a slit on the side and you never had to find the eye to actu-
ally thread your needle. You just slide the thread up or down the side until it locks
in place. I was skeptical of course as I had tried those calyx needles (that you do
from the top) and the thread constantly pulled out. Frustrating!
At any rate, her needles were expensive; about $5 for ONE needle. YIKES! Well,
the eye sight was not getting any better and I thought I would try one. I did and I
loved it. Then I misplaced it. I realized that I NEEDED this needle. Then one day it
appeared again and I knew I would be heading straight to her booth this year to
stock up. I never want to be without this needle again. She also carries needles in
different sizes depending on the type of work/thread you are using. In addition, she also has altered
Schmetz needles for your sewing machine if you do not have an automatic threader and that chore has
also become a problem.
How VERY frustrating to find she was not at the AQS Show this past March. After some fancy searching on
line as I had tossed the card and could not remember the name of the company...I finally found the web site.
I am sharing this with all of you because, if you are like me and threading a needle has become a real chore,
and has impacted the hand-sewing you are able to do, then I say a $5 needle is better than being frustrated
all the time or having to give up something you love to do. It does occasionally slip out but it literally takes
about 2 seconds to rethread it. This is much easier than trying in vain to thread a needle whose eye is just
too small to deal with.
The lady who invented this needle is Pam Turner. The needle is called the Spiral Eye Needle.
Roam around her web site. At the bottom of the home page is a funny story on ‗how to thread a needle‘.
I was surprised to learn she initially was making the needles herself with a dremmer drill and a wet grinder
on her kitchen table no less. YIKES. I am glad they are now in production and available to all of us.
