1926In 1926, to mark the 150th anniversary of the American Revolution, 13 trees were planted in Independence National Historical Park by DAR state societies.
1976Fifty years later, to celebrate the American Bicentennial,DAR contributed $200,000 to restoration efforts at Inde-
pendence Hall, including 18th-century furnishings forthe Governor’s Council Chamber and the Committee ofthe Assembly’s Room. In addition, DAR established theRose Garden at Independence National Historical Park.
2017In 2017, we provided funding for the planting of 76 treesat the park in honor of the nation’s upcoming 250thbirthday.
DAR continues its long commitment to celebrating the Patriotswho achieved American Independence
From the marking of the nation’s 150th birthday to today, DAR’s long commitment to America’s natural resources includes:
Recognized as the birthplace ofAmerican democracy, Philadel-phia’s Independence NationalHistorical Park is located on thesite where Patriots founded a new nation. Each year, more than 4.3 million people tour the LibertyBell Center, Independence Hall,Congress Hall, the New Hall Military Museum, Franklin Court, the Bishop White House and other buildings that celebrate the found-ing of our nation.
The Schuylkill River Trail runs
from Philadelphia to Valley Forge
National Historical Park. The
26.5-mile trail welcomes more than
2.7 million runners, bikers and
commuters each year and was
named the number one urban trail
in the country in the 2015 USA
TODAY Readers’ Choice Awards.
The trail begins at Bartram’sGarden, the oldest survivingbotanical garden in North America.
More than 46 acres in size, it
includes an arboretum that was
established c. 1728. The garden is
a National Historic Landmark,
outdoor classroom, living labora-

40,000 members.
The trail continues to ValleyForge, where Washington’s armymarched, tired, cold and ill-equipped in December 1777. Sixmonths later, the ordered ranks, martial appearance, revived spiritand fighting skill of the Americansoldiers proved a transformationoccurred amidst the cold, sicknessand hardship at Valley Forge. Thepark commemorates the sacrificesand perseverance of the Revolu-tionary War generation and honorsthe ability of our citizens to pull together to overcome adversity.
HALLOWED PLACES
In preparation for our nation’s approaching 250th birthday, please join us in this exciting project to continueour commitment to this important work and celebrate our nation’s semiquincentennial!
The DAR Pathway of the Patriots is symbolic not only of those who risked their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor by signing the Declaration of Independence, but alsoof the path each patriot took to plant the seeds of independence. If approved by voters at the 127th Continental Congress, June 2018, the planting of the “Pathway of the Patriots”along the Schuylkill River Trail may begin as early as autumn 2018 so that the trees will mature as 2026 approaches. The 250 trees along these Hallowed Places connects thenation’s oldest botanical garden in Philadelphia with Valley Forge National Historical Park. Each grove of trees will have special signage indicating DAR’s generous gift to the nation.

Pathway of the Patriots
DAR Pathway of the PatriotsAs a highlight of exciting preparations for the upcoming 250th anniversary
of the United States of America, the National Society Daughters of theAmerican Revolution is partnering with U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission,USA250, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and other organizations to create the “DAR Pathway of the Patriots” along the Schuylkill River Trail, a scenic multi-use trail in Southeastern Pennsylvania that connects the nation’s oldestbotanical garden in Philadelphia with Valley Forge National Historical Park. As an extension of the 76 trees planted at Independence National HistoricalPark during the Dillon Administration, this project affords the privilege of planting 250 trees along the trail AND adopting them in memory of Revolutionary War Patriots. How will my Patriot be acknowledged? These 250 Patriots will be featured in a companion online resource in order to raise awareness of thosewho achieved American Independence. In time, a website with mobile capabilities will display the location and donor of each tree, as well as a 50-word biography of the Patriot it honors. How can I help make this gift possible? DAR will be the primary financial sponsor of the DAR Pathway of the Patriots project, and will receive branding and signage promotion as result of this highly commemorative opportunity.DAR states, chapters, clubs and individuals are welcome to adopt a tree in memory of a Patriot. The 250 trees and theirrespective Patriots will be available for reservation on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note: all Patriots must be established Patriots and/or approved by DAR.
“This is the perfect way tohonor the patriots inour family trees
and most importantly,to educate othergenerations abouttheir contributions.”
Lynn Forney YoungHonorary President General
National Chair, America 250! Committee
Commissioner, U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission
If approved by voters at the 127th Continental Congress, June 2018,planting will begin as soon as possible so that the trees will mature as 2026 approaches.
