RefereeingtheexcitinggameofWheelchairRugbyisnotonlyfun,but it’salsorewarding.Wearealwayslookingforrefereestoofficiatethegameatalllevels.
Nopreviousexperienceinwheelchairrugby?Noproblem.Manyrefereesfromable‐bodiedsportsor other parasports have easily made the switch to “murderball.” Referees with experience inbasketball,hockeyandothersportshavefoundthetransitiontorugbytobeparticularlyseamless.Wecanevenhelpyoulearntobecomeanofficialevenifyou’veneverblownawhistlebefore.

leveltothehigh‐performancelevel.
Travelopportunities:High‐performancerefereesoftentravelaroundtheworld.

Flexibility:Becausewheelchairrugbydoesnothavetoinvolvealargetimecommitment,it’sagreatsupplementforarefereewhoconcentratesonanothersport.Whilemanycountriesrequirerefereestoworkaminimumnumberofgames,generallyrefereescandevoteasmuchoraslittletimeastheywouldlike.

Attendareferee’sclinic.RefereesinallZoneswillhaveopportunitiestolearnthegameatarefereeingclinic.Mostcountriesrequireattendanceatarefereeingclinicforcertification.
Afteryouhaveattendedareferee’sclinic,youmustapplyfordomesticcertification.Oftenthiswillinvolveawrittentest,afitnesstest(beeptest),and/orafloortest.Differentcountrieshavedifferentcriteriaforreferees.IntheUSA,forexample,refereesmustworkaminimumnumberofgamesperyearandattendaclinicatleastonceayear.
Therearethreelevelsofcertification:o NationalReferee:hascompletedbasicand/orintermediatetraining;o InternationalReferee–Zone:hascompletedanadvancedclinicandcanofficiate
atinternationaltournamentswithintheirZone.o InternationalReferee–World:hasbecomeexperiencedinternationallyandcan
nowrefereeataWorldChampionshiporParalympicGames.
GettingyourInternationalCertification:Ifyoudesire,youcanworkyourwayuptoachievinginternationalcertification.Todoso,youmustapplytotheInternationalWheelchairRugbyFederationviayourNationalGoverningBody.Tobegrantedalicense,youmustpassawrittenexam,fitnesstestandafloortest,whereyouwillbeobservedbyaseniorofficial.
