2 MORRIS COUNTY PARK COMMISSION • SPRING • 2012

Evening Canoe Programs

If you haven’t been in a canoe since summer camp, now is the time! The very popular  Canoe Paddles is

now being offered by the Morris County Park Commission.

On Thursday, May 10 at 5:30 p.m. join the staff of Pyramid Mountain at Silas Condict CountyPark in

Kinnelon for a unique paddling experience, and learn all the basics for staying safe and having fun in a canoe.

During this two-hour program, learn the parts of a canoe and paddle, how to use and adjust personal

otation devices (PFD’s), and basic canoe safety. Practice a number of strokes and maneuvers, including theforward stroke, stopping, spinning, abeams, and turns, as well as learning how to carry and launch a canoe.

Master your new skills during canoeing games and a paddle around the lake. Not only will you feel con-

dent in your abilities by the end of the course, but you will be rejuvenated by the scenic views and fresh air!

This Level I class is taught by instructors certied by the American Canoe Association, and is a prereq-

uisite for all other Morris County Park Commission paddling programs. All participants must know how to

swim. The cost is $15 per person.

On Thursday, June 14 at 6 p.m., you can use your new-

found skills to join a paddle on the Rockaway River. Look for

wildlife on this evening trip and nish up just before dark. All

participants must have attended a Level I Basic Skills Class totake part, and the cost is $20 per person.

These paddling programs are for ages 12 and up, and chil-

dren under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited,

so advanced registration is required. Please dress for the weather

and bring water.

For more information or to register,

please call 973-334-3130 or visit www.morrisparks.net.

Nighttime Adventures!

How often do you walk through the woodsafter the sun has set? There is so much to

experience after the stars take over the sky!

An entirely new world awakens in the woods after

the park gates close each night. A host of rarely seen

nocturnal creatures come out for their nightly errands:

ying squirrels glide between tree trunks, bats and

owls hunt on silent wings, and moths utter around

dimly glowing, white owers.

Bring a ashlight and hit the trails

just as the owls begin hunting for their  breakfast at the Great Swamp Outdoor

Education Center’s Night Hike Adven-

ture on Friday, April 13 in Chatham

Twp. Adults and kids ages 5 and older

can sign up for a time slot between 7

 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to join a staff naturalist on a fun,

educational hike in the woods. Groups will participate

in hands-on activities that demonstrate the adaptations

of nocturnal animals, learn about and listen for the

wildlife that is out and about, and maybe see an owl y

by or a raccoon watching from a tree! Each hike lasts

about one hour, and the cost is $5 per person. The staff of Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic

Area in Montville invites you to take part in a “Full

Moon Hike” on Thursday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. to

experience the full “ower” moon of the spring. On

this adults-only hike, explore the trails in the diminish-

ing light before the rising of the full moon, named by

the Native Americans for the abundance of owers in

bloom at this time of year. Also, on Thursday, June

21 at 7 p.m., join a Summer Solstice

Hike to celebrate the ofcial beginning of summer and the longest day of the year.

This hike is for ages 7 and up.

Both Pyramid Mountain hikes are

moderate level, approximately 2 ½ hours

long, and have a fee of $5 per person.

Participants should dress for the weather and bring

water and a ashlight. Space is limited, so advanced

registration is required.

For more information or to register, go to

www.morrisparks.net or call the Great Swamp OEC at

973-635-6629 or Pyramid Mountain at 973-334-3130.

Iron Mines o the

Kincaid Woods

Early settlers came to the rugged New Jersey High-

lands for its rich veins of iron ore. Early on, large

outcrops were found in places such as Hibernia and

Mt. Hope. However, it wasn’t until the 1860s and 1870s

that the booming iron business in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh

Valley, and the availability of canal and railroad transporta-

tion, made it possible to work many of the smaller ore bod-

ies. Dozens of mines were opened, and many farmers found

themselves in the mining business.

On Sunday, June 10 at 10 a.m., take a trip through time

with local historian Joe Macasek to explore the Kincaid Woods

section of Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area, in search

of the Rockaway Valley Mines. Look for the remains of a once

thriving mining district, see mine shafts and adits, and learn

how the miners did their work. This moderate hike, intended

for ages 7 and up, costs $5 per person. Dress for the weather.

Since space is limited, advanced registration is required.

For more information or to register,

 please call 973-334-3130.

Township! The exhibits “Off to War” and “Preserving Our Heritage”may be seen from Saturday, April 7 through Sunday, October

War were red at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, President Abraham

Lincoln issued a call for 75,000 volunteers. More than 2 million men

would serve in the Union Army over the next four years. During the

summer of 1862, Charles Foster responded to President Lincoln’s

call for more volunteers. Foster joined the 22nd Regiment Connecti-

cut Volunteers Infantry, when he was just 19 years old.Over the years, hundreds of signicant sites from nationally

important sites such as Mount Vernon to local sites like Fosterelds

Living Historical Farm have been saved through the efforts of

Step onto the battleelds of the

American Civil War, the struggle

that altered the political, social, and

economic landscape of the nation, and

into the lives of those involved at the Civil

War Weekend on Saturday and Sunday,

June 23 and 24. The Second New Jersey

Brigade is stationed at Historic Speedwell

in Morristown for a unique two-day event

that presents the lives of Civil War soldiers

more vividly than text books.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday,

and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, the

re-enactors lead activities throughout the

eight-acre site, presenting the daily lives

of soldiers and culminating with a stagedskirmish. Soldiers’ camps recreate daily

life with authentic cooking, dress, and

general setup, and the massive period can-

non will amaze you! Watch musket and

artillery drills, marching practice, and bayonet drills. Marching drills incorpo-

rate period instruments as soldiers proudly go into battle. A period photogra-

pher shows how a 19th century daguerreotype is made. A Civil War-era Signal

Corps group authentically demonstrates how important messages were sent

between units using colorful ags to send signals.

Enjoy learning about the basics of battleeld medicine for soldiers who

suffered injuries or disease. Visit the medical area where re-enactors care for

the “wounded” and demonstrate how these emergency units ran during battles.

There is something to discover around every corner.

While enjoying your visit to the past, tour Historic Speedwell, known as

the “Birthplace of the Telegraph,” including the National Historic Landmark

Factor Building. Recently, an interactive, hands-on telegraph exhibit opened

the exhibits of the Speedwell Ironworks, a granary full of early farm imple-
