How Embassy Pathways works 7

Certificate courses or some foundation courses

AustraliaAustralia offers two main types of higher education: career-focused training in colleges, and more academic university courses. We’ve selected partners from both sectors to bring you some of the best education Australia has to offer.

The Australian Academic YearMost Australian universities and colleges have two semesters a year. One runs from February to June, and another from July to November. A number of institutions also offer a summer semester from November to January during the vacation period.

UniversitiesThe public, state system has 39 universities which have an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. They offer courses leading to diplomas, Bachelors degrees and postgraduate degrees. A typical Bachelors degree takes three years to complete but some programmes, such as medicine or engineering, may take longer. Some universities also offer double degree programmes that may take up to four or five years.

Technical and Vocational CollegesThe public system also includes over 200 career-focused colleges known as TAFE. They mainly offer Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses, and are recognised internationally for highly respected teaching and good value for money. There are also a wide range of specialized, private career colleges, usually focusing on a particular skill set. Both types of institution can offer a pathway into university for transfer to degree completion.

AssessmentThis varies according to the course and the institution. Some courses are continually assessed throughout the semester and have final exams. Other courses are assessed by final exams only. Grades are given for subjects or units and a student typically completes four units in a semester. A three-year Bachelors degree would require the successful completion of 24 units.

Postgraduate StudiesStudents can complete masters degrees in one or two years. Entry into postgraduate studies by coursework can be competitive and is usually based on Grade Point Average from undergraduate studies.

PricePrices for courses vary considerably according to the kind of course and its length. Generally, undergraduate tuition ranges from A$20,000 to 25,000 per year. Living costs would typically range from A$12,000 to 18,610 a year depending on the student’s lifestyle. TAFE colleges are usually less expensive than universities.

WorkInternational students studying in Australia on a student visa are allowed to work up to a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight. Depending on the course studied, students may be able to remain in Australia and work for up to 18 months on a graduate visa.

USAWith almost 5,000 institutions, the United States has the largest and most well-respected higher education system in the world. Reflecting this incredible choice of opportunities, our partners include state universities, elite private liberal arts colleges and affordable community colleges.

The Academic Year in the USAMost American universities and colleges operate on an academic year divided into two semesters, lasting 15-17 weeks with winter and summer breaks in between. One term is from September to December and the second term from January until May. Most will run intensive courses during the summer and winter break as an option for accelerated study.

Universities and CollegesIn the USA the terms “university” and “college” are more synonymous than in other parts of the world, with very little difference between the two. Usually universities are larger institutions containing different colleges of study on the campus whereas colleges tend to be a lot smaller.

Community CollegesCommunity Colleges in the USA are sometimes referred to as Junior Colleges or Technical Colleges. They are public institutions that grant two year Associate degrees or certificates in specialized areas of technical study.

AssessmentAt the end of each semester, students usually take exams for each course they have studied, and coursework is also assessed. Grades are given, and a Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated on a scale from A (4 points) to F (0 points).

PricePrivate universities and colleges are the most expensive, with tuition, room and board usually costing about $40,000 per year.

State universities are less expensive at around $25,000 for tuition, room and board but classes have more students.

Community college is the least expensive option, costing as little as $6,000 per year for tuition alone, with large class sizes.

WorkInternational students are not permitted to work in the United States. It is possible, however, for students to work for up to 20 hours per week on campus, although jobs can’t be guaranteed. When students complete their degree, they can take Optional Practical Training (OPT). This provides for temporary employment authorisation for up to 29 months after they graduate.

CanadaCanada has over 200 state run post-secondary institutions that fall into two categories. Colleges have more career-focused programmes whereas universities offer more academic and theory-focused degrees.

We have selected partners across both sectors in Canada to provide you with the best study options possible.

The Canadian Academic YearThe academic year at most colleges and universities is divided into two semesters, from September to December and from January to April. Most institutions also offer spring and summer sessions in order to fast track completion of your programme.

UniversitiesThere are 98 state run degree granting universities in Canada that are recognised for offering a high quality education and research opportunities. Undergraduate programmes are generally 3-4 years in length and may offer co-op opportunities with local colleges.

CollegesColleges offer hands-on training and are known for their high quality teaching as well as great value for your money. Certificate programmes are generally one year while diplomas are generally 2-3 years in length. Colleges have also begun to offer high quality 3-4 year degree programmes.

AssessmentStudents in college and university programmes will normally be required to take mid-term and final exams. Coursework such as essays, assignments, lab work and presentations may also count toward the final grade for each term. Some graduate programmes also require completion of a thesis or research paper.

Graduate StudiesMasters degrees can generally take one to two years to complete. Admission to a graduate programme can be competitive and require additional test results.

PriceCanada offers the lowest tuition rates for international students compared to the UK, Australia, and the USA. The average tuition cost for a foreign student for one school year (8 months) in an undergraduate programme is C$12,000. Postgraduate tuition fees vary much more by course and subject, but are very competitive compared to other English-speaking countries. Housing for the academic year is approximately C$6,000 including facilities and meals.

WorkInternational students studying at a state run college or university may be eligible to work during or after their studies. Students may be eligible for a co-op, off-campus or post-graduation work permit. Students will require a study permit and their main purpose should be to study. Students with an off-campus work permit can not work more than 20 hours per week. A post-graduation work permit will not exceed the length of the student’s programme and will offer valuable Canadian work experience.
