EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP (EILA) CREDIT AVAILABLE.

Excellence in education is about more than getting every student to proficiency. It’s about looking at the child and responding to needs, even when those needs are beyond grade level. It’s about finding those pathways for students so that each may have a personally rigorous curriculum that affords continuous progress. Aristotle said that we are what we repeatedly do and that excellence is not an act, but a habit. Let us get into the habit of seeking and providing excellence for students. The 33rd Kentucky Association for Gifted Education’s Annual Conference provides proven effective instructional strategies, best practices, and new information to be used by educators to better meet the unique learning needs of gifted children. Join us for two full days of sessions where you can enhance your professional expertise in order to empower excellence in all gifted children.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

- Aristotle

Joyce VanTassel-Baska, Ph.D., is the Jody and Layton Smith Professor Emerita of Education and former Executive Director of the Center for Gifted Education at The College of William and Mary in Virginia where she developed a graduate program and a research and development center in gifted

education. She also initiated and directed the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University. She is the author and/or editor for numerous publications, including the Critical Issues in Equity and Excellence in Gifted Education Series published by NAGC. Her major research interests are on the talent development process and effective curricular interventions with the gifted.

HELPING GIFTED STUDENTS FIND AND FOLLOW THEIR TRUE STRENGTHS AND CALLINGS - The quest for identity is perhaps the most complex and challenging developmental task that gifted individuals of all ages must confront. Strategies for facilitating the process, however, are in short supply. Participants in this session will participate in a unique technique for helping gifted students boost their self-confidence, identify their strengths and celebrate the many ways in which they can use them - in school as well as into their adult years. Felice Kaufmann, Ph.D. (see page 6 for information about Dr. Kaufmann.)

THE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS IN MATHEMATICS (CCSS-M) FOR GIFTED AND ADVANCED LEARNERS FOR GRADES K-5 - Moving quickly through the CCSS is not enough to create critical, passionate, innovative, and talented mathematicians. Students need mathematics programs, competitions, and other STEM activities that develop and enhance their mathematical abilities, passions, and creativity. In this session, we will explore these issues, using examples from the new joint publication from NAGC, NCTM, and NCSM, Using the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics with Gifted and Advanced Learners. We will investigate proven curriculum, and apply strategies for creating advanced, engaged students who develop and collaborate on complex, multiple, and original solutions and problems. Linda Sheffield, Ph.D., is Regents Professor Emerita, Northern Kentucky University, Department of Mathematics. She has written numerous books and articles for both teachers and students and has conducted seminars for teachers across the United States and other countries. Dr. Sheffield is past-president of the School Science and Mathematics Association (SSMA) and was chair of the Task Force on Promising Students for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). She was also editor of the NCTM book, “Developing Mathematically Promising Students.”

DIFFERENTIATION SURVIVAL SKILLS - Children thrive in a differentiated learning environment, so it’s vital that educators learn survival skills, especially in their initial attempts at differentiating. This session will address some of the most common questions about differentiation, including what it is (and isn’t!), how teachers can establish and manage a classroom that promotes differentiation, which topics should be differentiated, what strategies are most effective, and how teachers can assess students engaged in different classroom experiences. Participants leave with proven differentiation strategies, survival tips, and resources that will guide them to successfully differentiate instruction for all of their students. Tracy Ford Inman, Ed.D., is Associate Director of The Center for Gifted Studies, WKU. She is co-editor of “Parenting Gifted Children,” co-author of “Assessing Differentiated Students Products” and “Strategies for Differentiating Instruction,” and President-Elect of KAGE.

NOW THAT I’VE FOUND THEM, WHAT DO I DO WITH THEM?--MEETING THE NEEDS OF GIFTED STUDENTS IN A SCHOOL SETTING - In the world of tight budgets, Kentucky Core Academic Standards (KCAS), K-PREP, novice reduction, and growth statistics, meeting the needs of gifted students is an increasing challenge. This session outlines the imperatives for services for gifted services and provides practical suggestions for addressing student needs with limited time and resources. Participants will leave with resources to aid with advocacy while exploring practical strategies for working through the KCAS and curriculum development with high potential students in mind. Jan Lanham, Ph.D., is Principal at Cox’s Creek Elementary in Nelson County, Past-Chair of the Kentucky Advisory Council for Gifted and Talented, and Past-President of KAGE. Dr. Lanham has a vast background in gifted education and does extensive professional development across the state.

TEACHING AND LEARNING MODELS - This workshop features several research-based strategies found to be effective with gifted learners in different subject areas. All strategies feature a hands-on - minds-on orientation to learning and include models for teaching reading, writing, science, social studies, and the arts. Each strategy emphasizes higher level thinking, problem solving, and concept development. Several strategies may be used for interdisciplinary work and project applications. An emphasis on creative teaching models is also included. Joyce VanTassel-Baska, Ph.D.

THE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS IN MATHEMATICS (CCSS-M) FOR GIFTED AND ADVANCED LEARNERS FOR GRADES 6-12 - Moving quickly through the CCSS is not enough to create critical, passionate, innovative, and talented mathematicians. Linda Sheffield, Ph.D.

BLENDED CLASSROOM LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS FOR K-12 GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS - EDMODO FOR ALL LEARNERS! - Blended instruction includes brick-and-mortar classrooms and online real-time (synchronous) and anytime, anywhere (asynchronous) interactions with students becoming more active, reflective, learners. Students and teachers engage in learning by using technology, and they become more familiar with tech-nology the more they use it. During our session, teachers will learn about Blended Class Learning Environments and the skills needed to manage learning. Teachers will discover how to address gifted student needs to create higher-level products and to share ideas in a safe and secure setting. Please note: Equipment Needed for this Session – each participant will need a laptop with wi-fi access. iPads and Android tablets will not work for this session. Participants are asked to complete a participant survey prior to attending this session at http://tinyurl.com/KAGE-OLE. Tracy Ford Inman, Ed.D., and Rob Paugh (Technology Integration Specialist, Bowling Green Independent Schools. Mr. Paugh has worked in education for over 20 years and is a frequent presenter on integrating technology into the classroom.)

IDENTIFICATION OF GIFTED/TALENTED STUDENTS: MORE THAN JUST SPECIFIC ACADEMICS AND GENERAL INTELLECTUALS - Students may be identified as gifted/talented in general intellectual and specific academic aptitude, creative thinking, leadership skills, and the visual performing arts. Kentucky requires us to identify and serve in each of these five areas. Yet, many Kentucky school districts do not have a comprehensive, district-wide, screening process for several of the areas of giftedness---creative thinking, leadership skills, and the visual performing arts. This session will provide strategies and information for implementing district and school wide screening processes and subsequent service implementation for gifted/talented students in these three areas. - Leah M. Ellis (Gifted/Talented Teacher with Fayette County Schools and KAGE Board member.)

MONDAY FEBRUARY 4 • ADMINISTRATORS INSTITUTE • PARENT NIGHT

Dr. Kaufmann will talk about her research into a unique study of a group of gifted adults who, in adolescence, were named Presidential Scholars on the basis of extraordinary achievement

both in and out of school. The award was, and still is, one of the most prestigious honors that can be bestowed on a high school student. But do such early accolades truly portend

outstanding accomplishment in the future? In 1979, Dr. Kaufmann set out to discover what happens to young people of great promise and has been following this group ever since. A

few became famous scientists, well-known politicians and renowned authors, but for others, life took some surprising turns. With the participants now in their 60s, these individuals have the long view of the fascinating and diverse ways in which gifted students’ lives turn out, and

they provide insights into ways in which parents may help along the way. Dr. Kaufmann will vividly relate a few of their stories and highlight thought-provoking implications.
