Mauro Sormani Finale Ligure, Italy

Mauro SormaniDiabetes

Performance matters to Mauro Sormani. It’s important in the family upholstery business, it’s essential to pursuing his twin passions of cross country skiing and mountain climbing, and it’s critical to managing his diabetes effectively. So when Mauro learned about the performance benefits of our insulin pump a few years ago, he quickly asked to have it prescribed. “My life is better with a pump,” Mauro said. “Sixteen years of injections was enough. Now I can eat when-ever I want, I have more endurance for climbing and my times are better when I ski.” Living a full life with diabetes is nothing new for Mauro. But he is taking it to a new level—he’s learning the salsa in his spare time.

Jack DavisCystic Fibrosis

Blain’s journey began in the first few months of his son’s life. Even then, Jack was coughing frequently, not gaining weight and always seemed to be sick. With his condition becoming increasingly serious and frightening, Jack’s doctors decided it was time to test him for cystic fibrosis (CF).

At the exact moment they were testing him for CF, he crashed. Baby Jack went into cardiac arrest. “We nearly lost him,” says Blain. When they learned that he had cystic fibrosis, Blain and Jack’s mother, Kristin, shared tears and worried for Jack’s future. “We sat in the Intensive Care Unit and envisioned a life for Jack dominated by what we saw all around us,” says Blain.Jack responded to his new medications and stabilized.

Blain and Kristin became avid researchers and advocates for Jack, learning all they could about CF.

Teanna Ringgold Neurostimulation to treat overactive bladder

Medtronic provides stimulation therapy to treat persistent overactive bladder, which afflicts one-third of all women at some time in their lives, and gastroparesis, in which the stomach contracts too slowly and causes chronic nausea and vomiting. To treat non-cancerous enlarged prostate, which afflicts half of all men over age 50, we provide an in-office radio frequency therapy.

Mike Robbins Southampton, England

Mike RobinsParkinson’s Disease

Doctors thought the shaking on Mike Robins’ right side was from stress. “My company was doing business in Russia during Gorbachev’s perestroika, working long days, so it seemed logi-cal, said Mike, who lives in Southampton, England. It wasn’t until an emergency appendectomy in Shanghai that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Mike tried medications, but the symptoms continued to worsen. “I couldn’t eat without spilling. I couldn’t drive. I couldn’t dress or use the toilet properly,” he explained. “Even my children were uncomfortable around me, because I was always shaking. Eventually, I refused to go out and felt like committing suicide.” Then a neurologist suggested Medtronic’s Activa Therapy. “As soon as they touched a part of my brain during surgery, my shaking stopped. My right arm and leg, which had been wound up tight, were light as a feather. Four days later, I drove to the Medtronic office and thanked them. I was so grateful.”

Adrian MartiHerniated disc

Being part of a Swiss mountain rescue team was a dream come true for Adrian Marti, but sitting in a helicopter looking down for 15 years took a toll on his body. He has recurring back and neck pain, then one arm became partially paralyzed. Doctors thought it was the result of nerve damage from a previous car accident, but surgery did little to relieve Adrian’s pain. Finally, doctors dis-covered a herniated disc. Rather than fuse the discs, doctors recommended Medtronic’s Bryan cervical disc, an artificial disc that maintains spinal motion. “I had the implant on a Thursday and left the hospital by Saturday-finally pain free,” said Adrian, who was back to work within a few months.

Melissa King-Strunk MRI technician

A simple cataract surgery led to a series of events that ultimately saved Len Reed’s life. “I went in to have a cataract removed, which is just day surgery,” said Len, a retired sales representative who now travels for fun with his wife. “The doctors noticed that my heart rate was quite low, so they took me by ambulance to a hospital. After a series of tests, they said I needed a pacemaker. They asked if I’d like to be part of a Medtronic clinical study testing a new pacemaker that can be used in MRI machines.

PhotoLog:The challenge with this photo is not being able to enter the MRI room. We had to run the strobe lights through the door way and add a second light through the observation window. Thankfully no equipment was destroyed by the magnet.

Stacey Brickson Madison, Wisconsin

Stacey BricksonHerniated Cervical Disc

After Stacey completed her first Ironman Triathlon in 1995, she was hooked. For the next six years, she competed in races across the United States. Then, two car accidents left her with a herniated cervical disc that limited her neck mobility and jeopardized her competitive future. “Running became unbearable; even biking and swimming were out of the question,” she said. Conventional remedies, such as medications and physical therapy, offered little relief, so Stacey enrolled in a clinical trial for a Medtronic Prestige cervical disc. Her damaged disc was replaced with one of our surgical-grade stainless steel discs, which are designed to allow motion. Stacey’s pain was gone within a day, and she was able to return to the triathlons she loves. “This single procedure changed the outcome of my life,” Stacey said, “Now, the sky’s the limit.”

Anastasios GirtzosSudden Cardiac Arrest

Anastasios is an active adult who enjoys basketball, backgammon and spending time with friends. But at the age of 30 while simply relaxing at a local pub, the greek native’s heart sud-denly stopped. Anastasios’ friends resuscitated him, and doctors later determined he had ventricu-lar tachycardia, an obnormally fast heart rate that can trigger sudden cardiac arrest. Within two weeks, Anastasios received a Medtronic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to monitor and correct his heart rate. Now, he continues to live his life as usual, working and enjoying his favorite hobbies.

Angelina Henderson Richmond, Texas

Angelina HendersonCongestive heart failure

During a layover, flight attendant Angelina Henderson was surprised by a sudden fast heart rate. She went to see a heart specialist, who diagnosed congestive heart failure and prescribed a CRT-D. “I cried for a whole day,” Angelina said, “but then decided to make the most of it.” She resumed speed walking two weeks after her device was implanted, was back at work in less than three months and has even taken her kids on the roller coaster. “I’ve been blessed with a new life,” Angelina added, “and I celebrate it every day.” Angelina also focuses her renewed energy on helping others. She shares her story with friends, coworkers and passengers, showing them that people with heart conditions can also have full, rewarding lives.

Jake WeirVirus-damaged heart valve

When Jake Weir was 3, he underwent an 11-hour open-heart surgery to replace a virus-dam-aged heart valve. After that, Jake was just another active kid in Prestatyn, Wales. Than last year doctors noticed the valve narrowing with calcium buildup. It needed replacing. “Thankfully, medtronic has come a long way since Jake’s first surgery,” said his dad, Andy. “They replaced his pulmonary valve non-surgically in just one hour.”

Antoinette had such a severe lumbar scoliosis that the pain incapacitatedher, and the deformity was progressively getting worse. Then she underwent spinal fusion sur-gery using Medtronic spinal products to correct the alignment. Today, Antoinette’s spine is much straighter, her pain is virtually gone, and she is several inches taller.

PhotoLog:The major challenge that we faced when making this photograph was the thunderstorm the morn-ing of the photoshoot. The solution was turning Antoinette’s garage into a photo studio., and then trying to keep her dry.

Loukas KitsosCoronary Artery Disease

Loukas Kitsos was on holiday in Guatemala last year, enjoying the Mayan archeology. When he first felt a burning in his chest and arms. He took some aspirin, then went to his doctor when he returned home to Lamia, Greece. The doctor diagnosed coronary artery disease and quickly implanted a Medtronic Endcavor drug-eluting stent. “ I can’t even feel that I have it,” said Loukas, a father of two, “but all of us think it is a life saver.” Today, Loukas is back traveling, both for his work as a civil engineer and to visit the sites of other ancient civilizations around the world.

Lisbeth Wohlhauser Fribourg, Switzerland

Lisbeth WohlhauserFractured Vertebrae

Lisbeth Wohlhauser was used to being active. Even after retiring from 35 years as a dairy and cheese shop owner, she and her husband took long hikes in the picturesque Swiss foothills near their home. So it was frustrating to have increasing back pain that made every movement a chore. Doctors thought she had rheumatism, so they prescribed cortisone injections, but the pain worsened until Lisbeth could do nothing but lay in bed. Finally, an X-ray revealed she had two fractured vertebrae. Doctors used our KYPHON Balloon Kyphoplasty procedure to elevate the fractured bone and fill the cavity with cement, correcting the deformity and stabilizing the frac-ture. “Having the surgery was like night and day,” Lisbeth says. “Before I couldn’t move at all. Now I can go for hikes, work in the garden and carry my new grandson. I’m so happy.”

Guenter Stagge Cardiac resynchronization therapy with fluid monitoring to treat heart failure

Guenter Stagge loves to travel and garden, but with his heart failure symptoms increasing and two sudden cardiac arrests in one year, he had to limit his activities. Prompted by results of the SCD-HeFT trial, his doctor suggested a Medtronic InSync Sentry. The device provides resyn-chronization to treat heart failure and ICD capabilities to treat sudden cardiac arrest, plus it moni-tors for fluid build-up in the lungs. As a result of the latter benefit, Guenter became the first heart failure patient in Germany to avoid hospitalization from fluid build-up. Guenter and his wife are finally able to enjoy retirement again. Their latest trip, pictured above, was to the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria

Jackie PhillipsChronic Pain

Eight years ago, Jackie Phillips broke her ankle while cheerleading. The ankle healed, but chronic pain gradually spread to all four limbs. “I was 14 and living life on the sidelines,” Jackie noted. “No cheerleading or gymnastics. I even had trouble eating and sleeping.”Physical therapy and nerve blocks only helped for short periods, so her doctor recommended neurostim-ulation. “I was nervous about having surgery, but a two-week trial convinced me. The relief was immediate.” After the implant, Jackie regained her appetite and even rejoined the cheerleading team.
