Patricia’s Transformation By: Erin Mullins, Outreach and Partnership Cultivation

The hospital physician told me I would never walk again. Patricia confronted that fear with a heart of determination, “No way, I will walk again,” she proclaimed.

If you have ever experienced the physical and emotional upheaval of a health crisis, you know how unnerving it can be. Patricia was faced with difficult odds. She was managing an issue of poor circulation in her leg and a sore on her foot that would not heal.

After landing in the hospital, Patricia decided

to come to Foss. Needing reassurance, she asked the EMT’s in the ambulance if Foss was a good place? Patricia said they told her, “Yes, if you have a choice you want to go to Foss.”

Unfortunately, it became necessary for Patricia’s leg to be amputated to prevent further injury. Although her prognosis for walking again seemed small, Patricia was resolute.

Through physical and occupational therapy Patricia gained strength in her arms and her one good leg. She learned how to transfer in and out of her wheelchair and how to stand on one foot.

Now she has a prosthetic leg and is beginning to walk again. “I probably would not be walking at all if it had not been for the staff, pushing me and making me do what they made me do.”

This Fall has brought new and exciting changes to Foss. We give a heartfelt congratulations and farewell to Gail Barthold, our Director of Nursing who retired after 19 years of service to Foss. We are grateful for the wonderful care and oversight she provided to our residents and caregivers.

I would also like to introduce to you, Myra Chartrand, our new Director of Nursing. Myra is originally from Florida, but has fallen in love with the Northwest. Myra comes to us with many years of nursing experience that include both acute and long term care. She has had a variety of nursing positions including Team Leader, Unit Manager, Infection Control, Staff Development, Assistant Director and Director of Nursing Services.

In addition to our new Director of Nursing, we have added two new Clinical Care Managers to provide leadership and oversight for our long term care nursing program. We are excited about this additional clinical expertise and support for our Nursing Department. These new nurses along with our veteran team of clinical leadership bring a combined total of 96 years of expertise to Foss.

• Write about the interactions with your loved one. Record your reactions and feelings in a journal. Write down the challenges that come up and what worked to ease the situations. Reread your journal frequently to gain different insight or a different prospective.

• Stay active and involved: volunteer, exercise, eat right and make time to be with your friends and family. You’re no good to your loved ones if you become ill.

• Join a support group and participate in a community of people dealing with the same experiences.

• Be patient with yourself and others surrounding the loved one but don’t be afraid to express your feelings.

• When you make choices for your loved one, think about what they would have wanted prior to the diagnosis. The educated choices you make for them out of love and support can give you moments of peace and a sense that you are doing everything for the right reasons.

The Impact of Dementia Myra Chartrand, RN, Director of Nursing

The diagnosis of Dementia is becoming more prevalent in our society and scientific research is attempting to discover why the disease is showing up in so many of our aging population. As of 2010, there is an estimated 35.6 million people diagnosed with some form of Dementia. There is even a group of patients diagnosed under age 65. The emotional and financial impact is

rapidly rising in populations all over the world. Adding to the number of those diagnosed with the disease is an even higher number of caregivers who also suffer the impact of this devastating disease.

Providing care for a person with dementia is physically and emotionally demanding. Often the primary caregiver is a spouse, other family member, or a close friend. Feelings of anger and guilt, frustration and discouragement, worry, grief and social isolation are common. Caregivers quickly become consumed into a life of caring for this loved one in every aspect, often forgetting to care for themselves. Physical and mental exhaustion often lead to caregiver illnesses and neglect. Some of the following practices can help the caregiver manage their own physical and emotional well being while trying to remain strong for their loved one.
