3. ANBUREY, Thomas

Travels Through the Interior Parts of America. Boston and New York. Houghton Mifflin Company.

1923. 8vo, 22.5cm, in 2 volumes, xxx,276 & 322pp., limited to 525 copies, this being #500, with half titles,

folded frontis map, includes list of original subscribers, expertly bound antique style half brown calf, blind

ruled raised bands, blind decorations in the panels, gilt spine titles, marbled boards, expertly done (with

a letter from the binder in London, to her customer in America, with description of the technique),

unopened, a fine attractive set 500.00

A valuable record of the early years of the Revolutionary War from the British perspective.

Thomas Anburey, an officer in the British Army, served under General Burgoyne, during the American

Revolution. He gives an accurate and valuable account, with many anecdotes, of Burgoyne's ill-fated

expedition during his march from Canada which ended in defeat at Saratoga in 1777. Anburey was

captured at Saratoga and was later shipped to Virginia. Written in the form of seventy-nine letters, he

gives details of his experiences and the manners and customs of the people he meets. He describes the

progress of the war and conditions in colonies, the depredations of the Indians, the hostility between the

Algonquins and Iroquois, the terrible conditions of the soldiers barracks, slavery in Virginia, the poor

conditions for the British prisoners. His account has an enjoyable anecdotal but accurate style, he is

however, criticized for borrowing from Burnaby, Smyth, and others. Much of the book was written in

Canada, the earlier letters being addressed from the H.M.S. Howe, off Newfoundland, from Quebec,

Montreal and St. John's. - See Lande 7. T.P.L 451. Sabin 1366. Howes A- 226 for the rare 1789 edition.

In fine binding. A handsome reprint of the rare 1789 edition.

dust worn but not clipped ~the paper in the jacket is somewhat brittle and may explain why not

many copies survive in complete jacket. 225.00

development of his art. This is followed by a chronological list of dated pictures, notes from published

pictures and books, and a catalogue of works, divided by theme and giving basic citations and

commentary for each picture. - Leren & Williamson. 6083.

7. [BROCKVILE. Upper Canada]. Merchants of Brockville. 1837.

Meeting of the Merchants in Brockville.

At the Meeting of the Merchants of Brockville, to take into consideration the "TARIFF" of Freight

from Montreal upwards, for the ensuing Season, as advertised by the following Forwarders, viz; - Ottawa

& Rideau Forwarding Company, by John Frothingham, President: McPherson & Crane, Hooker Henderson

& Co. H. & S. Jones, Whiting & Chandler.

B. Flint was called to the Chair, and James Hervey, appointed Secretary.

When the following Resolutions were proposed and carried.

Resolved I-That the advance in wages and price of provisions, we think the Forwarders are

entitled to an advance on the rates of last season of Twenty Five per cent.

Resolved 2-That the present "TARIFF" now published from the following statements, so far

exceeds what we consider a FAIR advance on the rates of last season, that we feel it is imperative on us,

to call the attention of the Commercial Community, and the public in general on the subject.

[being 8 Statements outlining various goods (earthenware, sugar, tea, straw hats, bale flannel,

cotton wadding, cod-fish) showing Old Tariff and New Tariff].

Resolved 3d- That, although the preceding statements only embrace a few articles, we think they sufficiently demonstrate the exorbitant advance contemplated

by the proposed Tariff, almost tantamount to a prohibition of bulky articles.

Resolved 4th-That, the mode of charging freight in this country, by measurement, is entirely new, (evidently on the St. Lawrence route, as far at least as stowage

is concerned, not necessary, as our barges can only come partially filled, and could only have contemplated by the Forwarders to mystify their charges.

Resolved 5th- That the advertised Tariff of the Forwarders exhibit marks of decided combination, ruinous to the trade and interests of both Provinces, and should

call forth the lawful exertions of the public to counteract the evil.

Resolved 6th-That the demand of the Forwarders, of payment, of freight and charges on delivery in good condition meets our entire approbation, but the latter

part of the last paragraph , in their advertisement, merits only our contempt , as it is contrary to common honesty and the law of the land.

Not in T.P.L., or Lande.

Resolved 7th- That we solicit the gratuitous publication of the preceding Resolutions by all Editors of newspapers in both Provinces, as it is a subject that deeply

affects the interests of all the community.

Resolved 8th-That, to meet this evil threatening the community, the following gentlemen be appointed a Committee to correspond with the Merchants of both

Provinces, and to adopt such measures as may be deemed necessary viz: T.D. Campbell, James Hervey, F.L. Lothrop, Ephraim Dunham, Samuel Pennock, John Bland,

Matthie, Easton & Co. Horace Billing & Co. and Hooker & Bell.

Bella Flint, Chairman.

Mr. Flint having vacated the Chair, T.D. Campbell Esq. Was called thereto, when it was resolved, that the thanks of the meeting be given to Mr. Flint, for the able

manner in which he had discharged the duty of Chairman on the occasion. James Hervey. Secretary.

[With a rebuttal on Separate Sheet, i.e. page]

To the Editor of the Montreal Gazette.

Sir.- I am induced to notice the document sent forth to the world by the Merchants of Brockville, giving a glaring and exaggerated picture of the probable effects

and changes to be produced by the Tariff lately published by the Forwarders, in order that I may point out the injustice of its application, and the false and erroneous

impressions of it may give of their general business.

[A detailed criticism of all the resolutions and statements made by the Merchants of Brockville]

In conclusion, I must say, is their flinty asperity is to be regretted, that in their aberrations, they did not temper their asperity by a more bland and courteous

feeling. Their purpose would have been served as well.

Montreal, April 15, 1837. - A Forwarder.

Aurora lists a similar document "Meeting of the Merchants of Kingston", April 7, 1837. 2p. Concerns the tariffs to be charged by forwarding companies for

transportation of goods via canal.

The letters relate the concerns of the tariffs to be charged by forwarding companies for goods via the Saint Lawrence. Traffic on the Saint Lawrence had greatly

increased exacerbated by the limiting access to the Rideau Canal due to a monopoly by the Ottawa and Rideau Forwarding Company. This would not be rectified until

the government construction of the Ste. Anne-de-Bellevue Canal opened the Ottawa River to trade in 1843.

worthy.

"Picturesque America" first appeared in parts as a magazine series in Appleton's Journal. Artists

include Harry Fenn, Granville Perkins, R. Swain Gifford, A.R.Waud, Thomas Moran, A.S. Hazeltine,

W.L.Sheppard, J.A. Suydam. These two volumes include essays on Florida, Virginia, Long Island, New

Orleans, Yellowstone, Niagara, Maine, Tennessee, New Hampshire. An important series that introduced

the whole of the United States to the general reader.

In the nineteen century this series and the Bartlett scenery books were how most people would see their country.

Both Montreal and Quebec benefited from the British Army officers' penchant for amateur theatrics usually with the regimental bands supplying the

musicians. Rare example of such a program. In 1842, Charles Dickens wrote of attending such a theatre production with regimental band in Montreal.

A True Canadian, Working and Providing for the Future - Buy Thrift Stamps.

WSS, W.P. 9. In the lower right-hand corner is the Canadian War-Savings Stamps logo: Np.

The original posters would have been published between 1915-1919. This is an un-dated facsimile

reproduction on brown stock paper, probably 1950's?. The original is catalogued as 59"x 43.5", this

is including border, 59.8"x 44". The original poster has a printed message on the verso. There is one

abrasion on the tree opposite the third line of the title, it was folded in four, center vertical fold is just

visible, on somewhat fragile paper this is in fine condition 500.00

The only location found for the original poster was the New York State Library. No records or

locations located for this issue.

Canada took a major part in World War I. To raise money for the war, countries sold interest-

bearing war bonds. Canada began calling its war bonds "Victory Bonds" (or "Victory Loans") in 1917.

From 1915 to 1919, the Canadian government conducted five bond campaigns. For each one, the

Victory Loan Dominion Publicity Committee produced a poster urging Canadian citizens to buy

bonds, and inaugurated the campaigns with ceremonies, parades, and appearances by celebrities.

Canadians responded enthusiastically. Children joined in by accumulating Thrift Stamps that they

could use to buy bonds. Communities that raised significant amounts of money were rewarded with

a Victory Loan Honour Flag.

24. [GREAT BRITAIN].

The State of the Nation, with a General Balance of the Publick Accounts. London. Printed for M. Cooper at the Globe, Paternoster Row. 1748. 8vo, 19.3cm, (in

8's), [3], blank, 55p., complete with half title / advertisement leaf, folding rear table, (with some archival repairs), in quarter tan calf, gilt black morocco label along the

spine, marbled boards, in fine condition 750.00

Sabin 90620; Kress 4934; Goldsmith 8323;

Describes the four capital funds constituting the National debt, all

having their origin to those contracted before 1716. The first three, the South

Sea, the General, and Aggregate were duty bearing, covering the interest on

their capital, and bore a surplus. The surplus, however, was retained to pay the

principal and interest in the fourth fund, termed the Sinking Fund. The four

year war with Spain had added substantially to the debt. The author of the

pamphlet was opposed to the war with Spain, supported by France. Blaming

the Patriot Party who had allied themselves with the Tories to bring down

Walpole, the author states: These last gentlemen finding that they could not

thus effect their designs, formed a Scheme that had a very noble Prospect for

its Basis, and if attended with Success, would effectually have answered the

End proposed; that is, the making of the War general, and ruining the Minister;

and thereupon engaged Admiral Vernon in an Expedition that proved

extremely happy for their Scheme...

In one of the Canada references, the author lauds Americans, stating that They proposed and under various Discouragements, effected the Conquest of Cape

Breton... (1745). He further claimed that though the French appeared willing to cut its losses, the British were more ambitious, and not satisfied with only the

possession of Cape Breton to endorse a peace, but rather hoped to have been possessed of Canada. The taking of Port L'Orient would have been a/nzoxt at had as

the Conquest of Canada... and suggestion was made that a Machiavellian scheme to run the country deeply in debt had been afoot in order to deprive Britain of the

ability to raise funds for supplies for the continuation of the war. By the Treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle, Cape Breton was returned to France.

Morley p71. In four parts consisting of 1. - South Hull. 2. - Aylmer, 1830-1904. 3. - The

Humours of the Valley. 4. - Genealogies. The author spent a great deal of his time researching this

book; interviewing the children and families of the pioneers for anecdotes and reminiscences of

those bygone times and of the people.

This was once a rare book, helped in that regard by an eccentric collector who, over the years,

bought every copy he saw. He told no one, however, when we opened a particular box in a storage

unit where his eighty or so boxed collection ended up there were six copies. He did tell me every once

in a while, what a good book he thought it was. He was a unique character. He confided once that he

used the two upstairs steps in his condo to alphabetize his collection. I was amused and said to him

“I wouldn’t thave thought of that but I guess that would work”. To which he replied with a smile, “a

lot of C’ and even more S’s’, had to use the landing for the S’s”.

There is no mistaking the element of pique in the disdainful comments of Canada made by... Preston's

first impressions were gained under unfortunate circumstances. He arrived at Quebec in February 1827,

was in Montreal during the riot that precipitated the rebellion in that province, and reached Kingston

during the height of the excitement over the outbreak in Toronto under William Lyon Mackenzie. For the

rest of his stay he was employed in Toronto. His bias appears in his criticism of the ‘stagnant' British

colonies as compared to the vigorous life of the United States, while the emergence of vigorous qualities

among the second generation of Canadians is deprecated on the ground that young Canadians would be

far better employed in agriculture or business than in over-crowding the professions and becoming

competitors for public employment. It was Preston's view that Toronto society was pretentious. (Story).

His work in the government service in Toronto 1837- 1839; descriptions of the chief towns,

politics, economics, business, public works, land grants, condition of the Indians, settlers, etc..

Your patronage is appreciated

The present catalogue includes books, pamphlet, printed ephemera, mainly from recent acquisitions and some selected from stock. We plan to issue

six to eight catalogues yearly. I hope you enjoy this material and our descriptions as much as we enjoy doing them and that you find a choice item or two.

We are always eager to buy good books and invite your inquiries.
