Patriotic “Charm” Design by Vicki McCarty, Calico Patch Designs
General Directions : Please read all directions before starting. I use Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 for my appliques.
Feel free to use the fusible web of your choice, where pattern calls for fusible web.

If not using a charm pack cut: 10- 5” square Blue, 10- 5” square Red, 20- 5” square tan Borders
Cut 2- 31/2” blue width of fabric strips
From each strip cut one of the following: 3
1/2” x 25”
31/2” x 14
1/2”
Stack a 5" blue squares on top of a 5" tan squares with right sides together. Sew a scant quarter inch on two sides. Cut 21/4” in from each edge as show in diagram below. Press open. Rotate sets and place rights sides together again with blue against tan. Match the seams. Sew a scant quarter inch on two sides and cut 21/4” in from each edge as show below. Press open. This makes two sets of 4 patches. Repeat process to make 10- 4" square four patches of blue and tan and then use same process with red 5” squares to make 10- 4" square four patches of red and tan. If you want quilt to be more scrappy, use 10 different blues and 10 different reds. You will end up with extra 4 patches but will have scrappier quilt.
Lay out 4 patches in 5 rows of 4 blocks alternating red and blue sets (as shown). Sew up
Rows and press in opposite directions. Pin at points for accuracy and sew rows together. Press. Sew a 31/2” x 141/2” border to the top and the bottom
of your project. Press. Sew the 31/2” x 25” borders to
each of the sides. Press. Create full size template by cutting on dashed lines as marked on the template pages. Tape pages together
as indicated. Place freezer paper with wax side down
onto the template. Trace the scalloped border onto the
freezer paper. Fold the quilt in half, top to bottom, with
rights sides together. Fold in half again, side to side,
so your looking at the wrong side of 1/4th of the quilt. Make all four corners match and pin securely. Press the freezer paper, wax side down, with the curves on the raw edges of the blue border and the folds as indicated on the template. If the freezer paper does not feel secure, pin it as well. Cut the template on the line, cutting through all four corners of the quilt, to form the scallops. Appliques Draw appliques on fusible web. No need to worry about reversing appliques. Press
fusible to the wrong sides of wool. Cut out on the drawn lines. Fuse by ironing into place using template as placement pattern. hand stitch in place with a blanket stitch
and Valdani 12 wt Pearl cotton. Trace leaf veins onto Sulky Tear Easy stabilizer. Pin
in place and sew a running stitch with tight stitches. This will perforate the paper making it easy to tear off. Quilt, bind using bias binding, embellish with beads and enjoy!
