Moved that the minutes of the 143rd AGM be adopted Nigel Hughes/Francie Russell.
Chairman’s Address
Jason précised the comments of both his and President Ross Grahams in the report.
Jason thanked all volunteers (particularly coaches and managers) and supporters of the club who have
contributed in any capacity. Particular thanks to committee of which he remains particularly proud of.
A significant year in the clubs history with the return to Premier Grade after some 12 years away from
it. Fantastic effort by all concerned with particular recognition to the coaches (Tracy Smith and Richard
Deck) and the playing support structures led by Murray Mexted.
Continue to see significant effort off the field to improve the clubs facilities (notice the recent
enhancements), ability to recruit players/coaches/managers/volunteers so that we hit the ground
running in 2014.
The culture and feeling within the club is strong and all the teams have performed with pride in their
club and represented us well. A particularly pleasing aspect of 2013 was the return of many old faces,
former Axemen and new associations to the sidelines and clubrooms. Long may it continue and we look
forward to it continuing next year.
In summary, we achieved our goals for 2013 and are well placed to deliver on our 2014 goals. Planning,
recruitment and preparation for 2014 is underway and we look forward to all teams performing with
pride, skill and courage in 2014.

Seconded by John Conway and universally agreed by attendees.
Distinguished Service Cap
Nigel Hughes outlined the presentation that was made to existing Life Member Murray Mexted to
recognise his contribution over the past several years. This was done by presenting him with a
distinguished service cap, which was the very one presented to Bill Brien by the club in 1991 – Bills
partner Francie Russell donated the cap to the club for this very purpose.
Congratulations to all of those recognised and well deserved.
Nigel Hughes spoke to the proposed changes by WRFU to the competition structure. This has recently
been mooted by WRFU and is under review by clubs. At this stage a formal WFC position is yet to be
developed. If more info is required please contact Nigel.
The subject of providing ‘blazers’ for our players attaining a certain number of games was raised by
Bruce Moore. After some discussion it was agreed that the incoming committee will determine the
qualifying criteria and manner in which it will be recognised, including any provision of clothing or
apparel i.e. the Blazer or just a pocket. General agreement that the practise should be reinstated in one
form or another however.
Meeting closed 7.15pm

PRESIDENT'S REPORT - Ross Graham
It is a privilege to present my fourth report as President of our great club. I am very conscious of our
history, traditions and unique place in the Wellington rugby community, as well as the high standards
upheld by former Presidents.
The past four years have seen a significant resurgence in our fortunes. 2014 was a year of
consolidation. We are now an established presence in Premier rugby and this, combined with the
efforts of our other teams and administrators, means we are very well positioned to take our place in a
restructured club system in 2015.
All teams played with skill, character and demonstrable pride in our club. To our hardworking and
talented coaches and managers - thank you for your commitment, your expertise, your passion and for
instilling an Axemen Culture throughout the club. The quality of coaching provided, under the direction
of Murray Mexted, is second to none. I am very impressed with the quality of young men wearing our
colours this year.
The Premiers found the return to top grade competition to be challenging. They played attractive
rugby, were invariably competitive and left no one in doubt that they deserved to be there. Vaea Fifita
and Dean Brunsdon both played for the Wellington Lions and five more were selected for the
Wellington Development Team trials. The sideline support was consistently good, culminating in a great
turnout at Kilbirnie Park for the Hardham Cup semi-final.
In March it looked as if our second team would be playing in the Senior Third division. In the event,
they were granted a place in Senior Second division and went within one point of winning the National
Mutual Cup. They kicked on to finish seventh in the Senior First division, a fantastic achievement for
this group. Our Colts were always highly competitive in the prestigious Division One grade and Sam
Dawson and Ryan Saunders were both selected for the Wellington Under 19 side. A highlight of the
year was the performance of our Under 85 kg side when they secured the Division Two championship
and the The Moody Cup in a thrilling final against MSP, in front of a group of very excited
supporters. As always the "Pressies" represented the club with pride and flair!
The participation side of any sports club needs to be supported by a capable and hard working
administration. This year we were again fortunate to have small and passionate management team,
under the very capable Chairmanship of Jason Judd. The club ended the year in a sound financial
position. The committee continues streamlining bar and kitchen services, upgrading the club rooms and
training facilities and ensuring an enjoyable social environment. Special mention should be made of the
great job done by Scott Fuller with his informative and entertaining weekly match reports, Sally Attfield
for keeping our finances in order and Nigel Hughes for representing our interests at the WRFU table.
Under the leadership of Erin Rush, the Junior Club continues to thrive, introducing youngsters to the joy
of rugby and the benefits of playing sport in a club and team environment. The Axemen culture is
instilled by their enthusiastic coaches and managers.
The WFC Foundation Trust organised the traditional Old Timers Day luncheon in May. It was the best
attended for some years. We were entertained by Keith Quinn and Murray Mexted. It was great to see
our Patron, Ian McCarrison in attendance. The Foundation Trust continues to catalogue and display the
Club's memorabilia and ensure the preservation of our heritage.
9
Special thanks go to our funders. The donations and grants from sponsors, charitable trusts, goods and
services providers and individual supporters is vital to our survival and growth. We are very grateful for
all the assistance we receive.
Thank you to the WRFU, the Wellington Rugby Referees Association and the Wellington City Council for
the ongoing provision of grounds, facilities and services and ensuring we can continue to participate in
our wonderful game.
2014 has seen an increasing number of Axemen Old Timers return to the sidelines and the club
rooms. Graham Williams is one of those regularly in attendance. The wider rugby community and
media have been genuinely pleased at our return to Premier rugby.
Planning is well underway for the 2015 season, focusing on coaching, management, administration and
financial resources. Most key personnel will be returning, reinforced with new talent. The Axemen
Academy continues to drive player recruitment and retention, team composition, summer training and
off-season competitions, to ensure we are strongly placed for the challenges of a restructured club
environment. We need to maintain momentum and become a legitimate contender for Jubilee Cup
honours over coming seasons. We also need to build our strength in other grades, ensuring a strong
player base and pipeline are in place, By the time of our 150th anniversary celebrations in 2020 we will
undoubtedly be recognised as one of the great New Zealand rugby clubs.
Give 'em the Axe
CHAIRMANS REPORT – Jason Judd
2014 will be recalled as a watershed year for the Axemen highlighted by our first year playing back in
the Premier Grade after more than a decade toiling away in the lower grades. Whilst this feat itself is
significant it is the structures and strength that sit below this that we can all take great pride in.
Supporting the Premiers we have a strong Senior One side, a Colts team nurturing talent, a winning and
very social Under 85kg team and a Pressies team that keeps doing what they do. Aligned to this is a
coaching team unrivalled in Wellington, facilities that have seen great improvement and our financial
position has strengthened to the point that it doesn’t keep me awake at night very often now!
While we saw the Premiers return to the top echelon, our hopes of making it to the Jubilee Cup round
weren’t achieved. Competitive across the board but only managing the one win we then made the top 4
of the Hardham Cup, beaten by the eventual winners in the Semi’s. We can be proud of their efforts and
after a season back the experience will prove invaluable and am expecting bigger and better in 2015!
The guys are clear on what they need to do to prosper and the coaching team is definitely pushing them
in the right direction.
Off the field, the club remains in great heart. I am supported by a fantastic Committee and group of
volunteers who work tirelessly for the benefit of the club. The club scene in Wellington is a difficult one
at the moment and more than a few clubs are struggling with some of the issues we faced a few years
back. For the good of rugby I hope they have the same caliber of people as we have had to identify what
needs to be done and then go out and do it! WE haven’t rested on our laurels and a recent strategy
session enables us to focus on what we want to achieve next and put in place the structures and
roles/responsibilities to get it done.
10
One of the most pleasing things I have seen over this year, and it’s been building for a while now, is the
return of past Axemen and Axewomen to the sidelines, club and clubrooms. We have heard from many
who can’t make it but are staying in touch and supporting in other ways. Scotty Fullers weekly updates
and The Axe is keeping our members well informed and they greatly appreciate his laconic humour and
style of writing in keeping them up to date with what’s going on. Hopefully this all continues in 2015
and beyond as we will need your support now more than ever!
When I mentioned the calibre of people that have got our club back up and running there are too many
to mention them all, but there are a few that I really want to single out at the risk of embarrassing
them. Nigel Hughes is the same tower of strength off the field as he was on it and serves the club in so
many ways I can’t keep track, Scott Fuller is a voice of reason and organisation and pure passion, Sally
Attfield has kept us on the straight and narrow and managed our finances outstandingly while Duncan
Domett just gets stuff done – sometimes he even asks first! Murray Mexted, in the way only Muzza can,
has lifted the clubs profile and dragged our on field fortunes around through sheer strength of will. I am
hugely grateful of the efforts of all these people and the many other Committee members, coaches,
managers and volunteers that help in whatever capacity they can.
2015 will be just as exciting as 2014 and I firmly believe we will see the club strengthening its position in
Wellington Club rugby and showing everyone what hard work, passion and commitment can achieve.
Would love to see you on the sidelines cheering during the season and with a quiet ale celebrating our
wins afterwards so come along if you can but stay in touch if you can’t.
Give em the Axe!
CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Scott Fuller
Where to start?
The Prems back where they belong and itching to have a crack next year at some silverware;
A trophy in the cabinet, well done the 85s;
Five teams on the pitch and each in their own right challenging for a piece of glory at differing stages of the
season;
A larger than ever committee and even 2 members under the age of 50;
Our first year with a CCO, Duncan Domett doing the hard yards around the club;
The lights working on the training fields, and use of the Wellington College artificial in the depths of winter,
you don’t win if you can’t train;
A $ in the bank, not a lot but better the black than the red. Sally still has her fist tightly on the purse strings;
A new Gym, thanks to NZCT and Deckie;
A fit-out to the Lounge, again thanks to NZCT. We already have 3 bookings for the club over summer to
better utilise our fabulous facilities and make us self-sufficient in years to come;
A new Website, and Facebook Page, lots more work to do but Greg Hughes has the bit between his teeth,
look out for more in 2015;
Where to next?
A great club with a fabulous history that had fallen on hard times has been rebuilt to something to be
proud of again and a strong platform has been created from which to launch an assault on Wellington
Rugby that will have those who thought they owned it by right to look over their collective shoulders with a
new respect. 2015 – Give em the Axe!

BCD TRAVEL PREMIER’s TEAM REPORT – Chris Kennedy
In 2014 we returned to our rightful grade – Premiers. We were asked to mix it with the big boys again
and at times we did. 2014 was about learning and developing, a Prem side is not born it is made.
The squad as a whole, was ably supported and directed by Decky, Cedes and Murray plus many others
in the background like Compost and Bruce Moore, Graham Williams to name but a few.
We prepared a team that had skill, courage, commitment and a desire to learn and improve. What this
resulted in was a team that made it through a few off field issues and a number of first round losses
some very close ones, to really hit their straps in the Hardham cup just going down in a hard fought
semi-final to the eventual winners Poneke.
Planning is already underway to help the team prosper in 2015 and ensure that Premier status is not
only retained, but we build on the achievements we have seen and take the next step up. We see 2015
as unfinished business and the boys are keen to sort this. As we proved when we were at our best we
were competitive with most teams and in some cases it was just the bounce of the ball on the day, but
if you are not there you can’t secure the bounced ball so bring on 2015.
A big thanks to all our players, including the overseas players who were part of the team and a huge
thanks to all who have supported us in any which way and we look forward to seeing you on the side-
lines in 2015 “let’s keep the dream alive and the axe sharp and at the ready”.
14
PLACEMAKERS SENIORS TEAM REPORT – Tony Travers
The season started with a welcome surprise being elevated to Senior 2nd without playing a game due to
another club not being able to field a team in the grade. This meant finishing strongly with limited
numbers in 2013 paid off (a big thanks to all who helped with this).
At the start of the season like many we were looking good for numbers and the quality of the new
members to the club was equally as promising. We developed a simple but effective game plan using
phase play to get quick quality ball and then use it wide where many of the team’s strengths lay.
We won a number of tight games and the stand out game of the round was defeating North’s 74 -20,
with the best game of the season defeating Poneke at their home. Unfortunately the team couldn’t
secure the bonus point required in the final game to win the silverware but none the less second place
on the table was a great result earning promotion to Senior 1st.
Senior 1st was another huge learning curve for players and coaches stepping up to a higher level again.
With another round of close games 1-2 points in many of them, with some going against us and then
dropping a couple of the games we were expected to win put the pressure on us right to the end of the
season, creating a must win game in the final round against Wainuiomata. Many of the clubs supporters
made the journey out to Wainui in the worst conditions of the season to watch the team grind out a
victory that secured our place in Senior 1st for 2015.
The team was one of the best group of players I have been involved with for many years but thanks
must go out to Murray for the support he gave me during the first round and for Craig joining in the
second round and easing the growing pressure I was feeling when coaching on your own. I must also
thank the Prems for the use of their reserve players during the season in some cases for whole games.
Also a final thanks to our supporters who also must take some credit for our season.
15
MEXTED MOTORS COLTS (U21) REPORT – Peter Scott
The 2014 season started with two preseason games where the team performed very well and showed
plenty of promise for the season to come. The next game was a grading game against Oriental Rongotai.
There was a squad of twenty one players for the game and the result was a disappointing one with a
loss. 50 to 28. The team then had four wins on a trot with the fourth one being a very good result
against the Oriental Rongotai team which had previously defeated us.
We were aware that the barometer was going to be the OBU team, who went on to win the
competition undefeated, and in this game we were defeated 26 -10. Our score probably reflected the
level at which Wellington Colts team were performing at, at that stage.
We started the second round having finished second in the first round. A very disappointing result
against the OBU second team losing 36 – 32 was the start of a gradual decline in performance which
although being mostly mental was also the point that we lost important players to injury and one to the
Premier team. From this time on, the team never performed at the level that they had previously and
the final result was disappointing being fifth in the competition and missing the playoffs.
There was a large fall off in attendance at practice and games and also general enthusiasm that
surrounded the team, that mirrored what occurred the previous year and strategies need to be put in
place for 2015 to combat this malaise with more guest coaches with specific skill coaching and coaching
assistance from the Wellington Rugby Union as well as from within the club.
It is important to recognise the input of the two coaches Jarvan brown and Richard Dawson and also the
Manager Steve Mann. This is an amateur game and these persons gave up many hours of their time
working with the team. The team also had strong support from the player’s family and friends and
generally the players developed a strong feeling of comraderie which continued off the paddock. It is
hoped that this will result in players returning for the 2015 year.
16
MISH MOSH UNDER 85’s TEAM REPORT – Scott Fuller
Wellington Football Club won the Under 85 Division 1 grade 5 years ago and this year took out the
Division 2 Title in a series of remarkable come from behind performances.
A tough season, using 43 players in total including 7 halfbacks and 5 first 5’s meant continuity and
rhythm were not the hall marks of the team, but team morale and determination certainly were. The
team started poorly and although holding a number of sides to close margins only managed one win in
the first round in Division 1 and so found themselves in Division 2.
The second round started no better with two losses but a string of 4 wins saw the team winning 5 of the
last 6 games including a win over the top qualifier. This come back allowed them to finish 4th and take a
place in the Semi-finals although guaranteed of two away games if they were to progress. The semi-final
was a real grass-roots rugby 6-3 victory over HOBM and set up a final against Marist. Again down 6-15
with 10 minutes to go it took another great revival and two tries, form our Back and Forward of the
year, to clinch a nail biter. It often feels better to win the tough ones.
The team was very well captained by Tom Fuller, ably supported by Andrew Wong, both of whom
played all but 1 game and along with a number of senior players the team had good on field direction.
Great commitment from Beavis, Oli, Tom B, Toby, Dom, Slade, Berry, Hyrum, Ru, Jessie, Dan, Wally and
Ace who hardly missed a practice or game during the season. This strong nucleus underpinned a good
spirit within the team. A spirit that grew stronger as the season progressed.
Coach John De Gregorio, and the Team Managers, put in plenty of effort and the team was as well
prepared as was possible with the fluctuating attendances. Thanks guys. We would also like to thank
our supporters, WAGS, parents, Axemen and other friends of the team for their solid support in during
this challenging season, especially for the Final. We hope we repaid that support and will back again
next year.

CENTRAL CITY LABELS AND PRINT PRESIDENT’S TEAM REPORT – Jason Judd
I seem to say it every year but the Pressies just had another outstanding season and performed
outstandingly well. In addition to that some of our on field play was good to! The same old
faces that have been trotting around the last few years returned once again and while a little
slower that in their heyday they have lost none of their guile and cunning. We managed to win
about two thirds of our games and played some sparkling length of field rugby in the process.
By that I mean we gave the ball to B Mac or Chin and they ran – we stopped and cheered!
Seldom playing the same 15 from week to week, and occasionally not having 15, meant that
continuity wasn’t a strong point. However, whoever pulled the jersey on did us proud and did
all we asked of them which was their best!
Our non-existent warm up, complete absence of training and cavalier attitude to the ref’s
instructions that was evident in previous seasons continued in 2014 and is likely to return in
2015. We play cos we enjoy the game, love the camaraderie, appreciate the beer afterwards
and it gets us out of the house on a Saturday avo.
Once again the boys went on tour with 13 or so heading to Napier for the weekend. That’s all
that needs to be said about that suffice to say a good time was allegedly had by all!
The Pressies were once again strong supporters of club functions and teams with Walker, Neil,
Lionel, Pencil, James and BMac and your scribe particularly evident. We thoroughly enjoyed
following the Under 85kg team during their run to the championship and marveled at the
concept of being under 85gks – those were the days!
See ya all again next year.

WELLINGTON RUGBY BOARD and BOARD OF DIRECTORS REPORT – Nigel Hughes
It has being one of the most tumultuous and controversial years that I can remember as a Rugby Board
member or as more recently a Director on the Board of Directors for Wellington Rugby.
The end of last season and the demotion of Wests culminated in a majority decision of the Rugby Board
to move from a promotion relegation type premier Club competition, to a qualification/criteria type
competition. This was initially mooted for the 2014 Season but deferred until the 2015 season and that
process has now reached a point where applications have been made by 14 Clubs and are being
considered by the subcommittee delegated for that role, with the process to be completed by the end
of October 2014.
It was further finally agreed by Clubs that the 2015 Premier Season would finish with the final of the
Jubilee Cup being played two weeks prior to the commencement of the ITM Cup season in the hope
that Lions players would be available for the Jubilee Cup Final. In view of the injuries that have occurred
before and during the Lions 2014 season, and a new coach to be appointed for the 2015 season, that
hope may not eventuate. This could well end in a Swindale Shield round with not all clubs playing each
other in order to accommodate this desire by Clubs.
We also saw in the implementation of a new junior Rugby structure and the appointment of the Junior
Rugby Advisory Board significantly changing how junior rugby is run in Wellington.
A further review following on from that is of Secondary Schools Rugby (focused on the retention of
secondary school players in clubs) is currently underway, being one of three outcomes from a
Chairman’s meeting and subsequent Rugby Board meeting mid-year.
The second of those priorities related to different funding models and this is also being considered by
the Rugby Board. The third aspect related to a review of governance with some clubs seeking
dissolution between the amateur and professional arms of rugby in Wellington. This review again is
underway at the time this report is being prepared.
Coupled with all of that the result of some financial factors that have come to the attention of the Board
of Directors, we have commenced an independent review of the current business model with a
reasonably wide ranging terms of reference and short time frame to address immediate financial
concerns that the Directors have. The Club Governance Review will also form part of that independent
review.
With so many reviews going on it is hard to imagine how we can get on with the game of rugby and
clearly in terms of the Lions performance this season we have not.
While there were a plethora of injuries at the start (and during) the season that no provincial team
could contemplate, the review of our academy structure and what has or hasn’t changed from the
success of the last two seasons is again a hot topic. It is to be noted that performances of the other
teams have been very good in the main with the under 19 side winning the national tournament. All
hope is not lost.
The outcomes of some of these processes may be known to you by the time this report is published but
it seems in any event, the way rugby is managed in Wellington will change in a significant way. Having
just gotten my feet back under the table of the Board of Directors (as Deputy Chair of the Rugby Board)
this has been at times, a time consuming but necessary process.

JUNIOR CLUB – Erin Rush
The junior club had a satisfying year in 2014, with 169 registered players covering from Under 6 Rippa
Grade through to Under 13 Open Grade. We had 11 full teams, with the Under 13 players combining
with Marist St Pats to be the “Eastern Suburbs Barbarians”. From the Under 6 Taniwhas, which
conducted all games and training in te reo Maori, to the combined Under 13 team, our junior players
played with pride and passion.
Several teams played the season juggling team numbers. Some teams were painfully short which meant
bringing players up or down for a second game on the weekend in order to make enough for a team, or,
as in our higher grades, too many players meant rotating players off to give everyone fair playing time.
In most cases players and parents were understanding of these challenges and gave the team and the
coaches their full support and cooperation, great to see.
There were many highlights during the season - Seeing new parents tentatively helping out at the start
of the season, to confidently running trainings and refereeing games by the end; Watching the many
girls developing in confidence and skill, culminating in Millie Mackie from the Under 12 team being
selected in the Hurricanes girls squad; The Under 10 Wildfish participating in out of zone tournaments,
winning the Palmerston North 7s in the last outing of the year; Harry McKee from the Under 12 Axemen
being selected for the Wellington Under 55kg team; Celebrating Sai Daunibau, who tragically lost his
arm in an accident last year, playing a full season of Under 10 rugby and playing with tremendous skill
and determination; Enjoying the camaraderie of fellow club convenors and the warmth and support of
Marist St Pats so that we could both field an Under 13 team; The unstinting and unflinching help from
the Junior Committee.
Congratulations to the Junior Player of the Year, Lucas Graham-O’Connor, the Axemen Cup recipients –
the Under 9 Axemen, and the Team of the Year, the Under 10 Wildfish. Thanks to the Senior Club for
the continuing support and best wishes for 2015.
WELLINGTON BARBELL CLUB – Peter Jack, President
Our present club has 6 active members. The recent loss of Mark Johnstone to Tasmania was a blow as
he was a regular. However, new member Grant Rutherford, whom I train in the Kiwi
compensates for his loss. The deaf Scot, got third in the open Senior 100m Wellington Championships
and fourth in the 200m. He is a former Scottish International Rugby 7s Player and was recently selected
for the NZ Deaf Rugby XV. Next sea
85kg side.
Unfortunately breakages continue in the Weights Room with up to 4 plates broken and the new mirror
since last year. Tidiness has improved slightly, with many new users in the Ru
group, this is disappointing yet to be expected. Thankfully no theft of equipment has been seen.
This year saw the NZ Institute of Sport share use of this Weights Room with the WFC and ourselves. All
seems to have sorted itself out with all working together as best we can.
Our Club would like thanks the WFC for the way both have worked together to have one of the best

Obituaries
We record with regret the deaths of the following members:
Murray Frederick Gifford, AKA The Block
Block played approximately 100 Senior matches for Ories before switching his allegiance to the
Wellington Football Club. He made an outstanding contribution over a prolonged period, including his
years as Club Captain. Block always had firm and frank views on the management of the Club!
His service was acknowledged when he was made a Life Member at our AGM in November
2013. Although in hospital and unable to attend, this recognition gave Block considerable pleasure and
pride. He was the father of Dean an outstanding Premier lock for the Club in the 1990's, who sadly
passed away in 2012. Block died in Wellington on 8 February 2014, aged 69.
Henry Phillip (Phil) Kendal
1 July 1938 - 28 July 2014
Phil played for the Wellington Football Club in the 1950's and 1960's. He later became an active
member of the Management Committee and took a particular interest in the maintenance of the club's
facilities.
Phil was a long time Vice President and appointed a Life Member at our AGM in November 2013, in
acknowledgement of his many year’s service. This recognition gave Phil considerable pleasure and
pride. A large number of Axemen appended Phil's funeral on 1 August.
Ian Roderick Smith
Died 24 October 2014, aged 68.
Ian played for the WFC in the 1960's and 1970's. He was greatly respected for his work as
a coroner in Nelson and, since 2007, in Wellington.
+ Our deepest sympathy to all concerned +
+ May they Rest in Peace +
