My heartiest congratulations to Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra on its 20th Anniversary celebration on August 17, this year. I am especially delighted to welcome Tengku Irfan as the Youth Brand Ambassador for the MPO and I am confident that Irfan will help to enhance the profile of MPO in the international arena.

Over the years, DFP and MPO have significantly contributed to enhancing our cultural landscape, especially in classical music. Providing alternative entertainment, DFP and MPO have presented a variety of world-class performances that have undeniably enriched the life of Malaysians and the expatriate community.

Since its inaugural performance in August 1998, the MPO has grown as an orchestra of international virtuosity and continues to enthrall its audiences with its brilliant artistry. The MPO continues to promote and nurture young local talents through the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, with activities and programmes under the tutelage of MPO musicians.

Simultaneously, the Education and Outreach programmes of the MPO have made huge contributions in creating awareness and appreciation of classical music through its activities with schools and other learning institutions, hospitals and community centres.

I would like to thank our main donor PETRONAS, our sponsors, partners and concert patrons for their continuing support of MPO, the MPO musicians for their inspiring performances, and the staff of DFP and MPO for their tireless commitment and work behind the scenes.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to MPO’s 20th Anniversary Special, filled with exciting concerts at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS. I congratulate the DFP and MPO for having reached this significant milestone, and I look forward to its continued success.

Welcome to our 20th Anniversary Special Season! On August 17, 2018, we will mark the 20th Anniversary of MPO’s inaugural performance at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS. MPO has kept alive the classical music heartbeat of the city, and stayed true to its promise and objective of nurturing, promoting and developing the love for classical music amongst Malaysians.

Our concert repertoire and overall programming had undergone some changes over the years. Despite the constraints of our purpose-built concert hall, we had managed, beginning in Season 2012/13, to present exciting ballet and opera performances to introduce more versatility in our programming and to bring in new audiences. In Season 2015/16, we also presented the first-ever ‘circus’ in DFP… the Cirque de la Symphonie, and we rounded off last Season with a second performance in May 2018.

This Anniversary Special Season lends itself to a fitting cross-over and change to the format of our concert seasons. Beginning 2019, our Concert Season shall commence in January and end in December of each Calendar Year, instead of the August-to-July window of previous seasons, which was in keeping with the European orchestral schedules. This new season schedule is part of our continuous improvement initiatives, and to enable us to better manage and align ourselves with the budgeting cycles of our main donor and sponsors.

We take the opportunity of this Anniversary Special Season to announce that we have chosen Malaysian pianist prodigy, Tengku Ahmad Irfan Tengku Shahrizal, to be MPO’s Youth Brand Ambassador. We congratulate Tengku Ahmad Irfan and we are confident that he will continue to make the MPO and Malaysia proud in the international classical music scene.

Our search for the next Music Director or Principal Conductor is still ongoing, and we will make our announcement at the appropriate time. In the meantime, our orchestra will be given the opportunity to learn from and work with various well-known conductors, with their diverse styles and music interpretations. This Anniversary Special Season, albeit a short one, will nevertheless promise continuing musical adventures, beginning with a Gala performance on August 17, 2018.

I would like to conclude by thanking our main donor PETRONAS, our sponsors, partners, subscribers and audiences, for their continued support of the MPO, and to enable us to enhance the cultural landscape of Kuala Lumpur, as well as to reach out to various communities in the country.

We hope you will enjoy our Anniversary Special’s musical offerings at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS.

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) is Malaysia’s first concert hall dedicated to classical music and home to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO). Located at the PETRONAS Twin Towers, it was officially opened on 17 August 1998 by the patron of the MPO, Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali and Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

Designed by Cesar Pelli, the hall takes its inspiration from the traditional shoe-box shape of the great 19th century European concert halls with the magnificent Klais Pipe Organ providing a spectacular backdrop to the stage.

The hall seats 920 people at one time, which includes box seats, corporate suites and a royal suite. Acoustics experts Kirkegaard & Associates have incorporated unique acoustical devices into its design to maximize the hall’s natural qualities.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2018, DFP plays an integral part in the music and cultural landscape of the city of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia. It continues to enthrall audiences since the day it first opened its doors. Other world renowned orchestras that have performed here include the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, BBC Symphony and Vienna Symphony.

Beyond classical music, DFP has hosted ensembles of jazz and world music such as the Count Basie Orchestra, Yellowjackets, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mezzoforte, Igudesman & Joo, Pink Martini and Gotan Project.

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS

International superstars who have graced the stage include Harry Connick Jr., Diana Krall, Anoushka Shankar, Laura Fygi, Zakir Hussain, Larry Carlton, Harvey Malaihollo and Ruth Sahanaya.

Renowned Malaysian artists including SM Salim, Sheila Majid, M Nasir, Siti Nurhaliza, Jamal Abdillah, Khadijah Ibrahim, Ramli Sarip, Ella, Yuna, Faizal Tahir, Najwa and Dayang Nurfaizah have mesmerised audiences at DFP.

DFP also provides the platform to showcase the talents of young Malaysians from the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO).

DFP’s success is attributed to its exceptional architectural design, superior acoustics and recording studio modelled after the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

As the first purpose-built concert hall in Malaysia, DFP will continue to provide Malaysians with world-class music experiences through innovative programmes and repertoire every season.

The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) gave its inaugural performance at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on 17 August 1998. With the initial search for outstanding musicians involving a worldwide audition tour, the result was a symphony orchestra made up of musicians from 25 nations, including 4 from Malaysia, a remarkable example of harmony among different cultures and nationalities.

A host of internationally-acclaimed musicians has performed with the MPO including Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Yehudi Menuhin, Joshua Bell, Harry Connick Jr., José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Chris Botti and Branford Marsalis, many of whom have praised the MPO for its fine musical qualities and vitality.

With each new season, the MPO continues to present an exciting programme of orchestral music drawn from over three centuries, as well as the crowd-pleasing concert series. Its versatility transcends genres, from classical masterpieces to film music, pop, jazz, traditional, contemporary and commissioned works.

The MPO regularly performs at major cities of Malaysia. Internationally, it has showcased its virtuosity to audiences in Singapore (1999, 2001 and 2005), Japan (2001, 2009 and 2017), Korea (2001), Australia (2004), China (2006), Taiwan (2007) and Vietnam (2013).

Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra

Its Education and Outreach Programme, ENCOUNTER, reaches beyond the concert platform to develop musical awareness and appreciation through dedicated activities at such diverse venues as schools and colleges, hospitals, orphanages and other community centres.

The MPO’s commitment to furthering musical interest in the nation has been the creation of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO); its inaugural concert at DFP on 25 August 2007 was followed by a tour in Peninsular Malaysia. It has performed in Sabah and Sarawak (2008), Singapore (2009 and 2017), Brisbane, Australia (2012), Kedah (2013) and Johor Baru (2014). The MPO has also released 22 commercial CDs.

As it celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2018, the MPO remains steadfast in its mission to share the depth, power and beauty of great music.

The MPO’s main benefactor is PETRONAS and its patron is Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali.

Malaysian Philharmonic Youth OrchestraThe initial steps towards realising the long-cherished dream of the late PETRONAS Chairman, Tun Azizan Zainul Abidin, to create a youth orchestra as a ‘stage for young talents’, alongside the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), were taken on 13 January 2006. Some 500 aspiring musicians from across Malaysia auditioned and 110 – with an average age of 18 years – were selected to form the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO).

After a period of intensive training under its founding conductor, Kevin Field, and mentors drawn from the ranks of the MPO, the MPYO gave its first public concert in Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS on 25 August 2007. It has since established a pattern of music camps held three to four times a year, culminating in performances in Kuala Lumpur andbeyond. It has toured Peninsula Malaysia (2007 and 2010), Sabah and Sarawak (2008), as well as performed in Singapore (2009 and 2017) and in Brisbane, Australia, as part of an exchange programme with the Queensland Youth Orchestra (2012).

Auditions are held every year, to provide opportunities for talented young Malaysian musicians to join the MPYO and participate in orchestral training and performances, under the guidance of MPO

musicians as tutors. The music repertoire ranges from symphonic pieces to specially-commissioned works by Malaysian composers. In an innovative project, ‘Jazzaar’, in 2010, the orchestra collaborated with six leading jazz musicians from the USA, led by Fritz Renold (who wrote his Suite Nusantara specially for the project) to enrich and widen their musical experience.

In 2013, the orchestra performed in Kedah with renowned local singers Datin Paduka Julie Sudiro and Datuk Yusni Hamid in a keroncong concert attended by the HRH Agong of Malaysia. In 2014, the ensemble collaborated with Yayasan Warisan Johor and Orkestra Tradisional Malaysia in Johor Baru. In 2015, the MPYO was given the honour to perform at the opening of the 128th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Kuala Lumpur.

In 2017, the MPYO was invited to perform at Majlis Santapan Malam Memuliakan Mesyuarat Majlis Raja-Raja ke-247 at Istana Negara, and Majlis Jamuan Teh Sempena Sambutan Ulang Tahun Hari Keputeraan Rasmi DYMM Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, Sultan Johor.

MPO’s Encounter & Outreach programmes are aimed at bringing and sharing the joy and experiences of (essentially) classical music to the local community.

From Perlis to Sabah, Encounter brings the joy of ‘live’ music performances to thousands of people of all ages and helps to support the burgeoning music culture in Malaysia.

Encounter prides itself in creating awareness and appreciation of classical music among school children and aspiring music students, through performances not only at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS, but also performances at schools, masterclasses, workshops and various talks by MPO and other professional musicians, including visiting artists.

Whether you are a child prodigy, eager amateur or professional musician, Encounter has something for everyone. Music moves people, so make Encounter a part of your life.
