Manufacturing Process
The marble and granite manufacturing process is quite simple as a general idea, but the
peculiarity of each material and its own fragility impose severe rules in the control of every
single working phase.
STEP 1 GANGSAWING
16
Slabs of different thicknesses come out sawn from each block by the use of diamond blades set
on a power loom through vertical gangsaws
Working at a sawing speed varying from the 4cm/h for the hardest granite to the 40cm/h for the
softest limestone.
The cutting speed and the sawing characteristic of the diamond blades are differently set every
time on the basis of the demanded thickness and of the physical and technical peculiarity of each
stone, so as to avoid the collapse of the block during the gangsawing.
STEP 2 HAND RESIN GLUEING
In order to make harder weak and widespread veined structured marbles it is necessary to exploit
the modern technology of the epoxy resin as well as the hands of skilled workers able to glue the
most broken material making its structure as hard as possible.
This phase is very important, since it makes possible the use of stones of beautiful color shades
that otherwise should not be employed in the building field.
STEP 3 REINFORCING
After the hand resin glueing the reinforcing phase is due to render the flexural strength of veined
marbles higher.
An epoxy resin is poured on the back side of the marble slab so that during oven-drying
catalyzing the hard resin fills in all the natural micro holes of the stone. The marble is also
reinforced by a glass fiber wires not glued by resin on the back side of each weak slab.
STEP 4 AUTOMATIC RESIN FILLING
17
The plant for automatic epoxy resin filling has been the first cause of Cogemar success in high
quality marble manufacture.
Coloured epoxy resins are sprayed and speeded all over the front side of the slabs, the catalyzing
process goes on inside a vertical line of drying ovens.
The mixture of the resins is made on purpose for each material, due to its peculiarity in colour,
vein, porosity and strength; the resin mixture definitely fills in all the microholes in the marble
slab, making it many times stronger than its natural.
Through this manufacture the cycle of strengthening of the marble slab is completed and so beautiful coloured materials become suitable to an architectural use.
STEP 5 SLABS LINE
POLISHING
The stone slab is naturally mat, to make it brilliant you have to polish it by a surface abrasion
proces
The first step of this phase is setting each slab properly on the line, then washing it at a high
pressure in order to clean every trace of dust.
The roller conveyor carries on the slab into an oven-drying section, and then all the entire resin
and glue residue are removed.
After oven-drying the real polishing activity begins: while carried over the roller conveyor the
slab is subject to the rotating pressure of the polishing heads set in increasing order of sharpness.
The final wax and the quality visual control complete the polishing manufacturing phase.
Coming out from the polishing line each slab is protected by a plastic film and recomposed in the
original block, in order to preserve the colour uniformity of the parcel.
Polishing is just one of the surface finishing treatment for granite, marble limestone and
travertine, even though it is the most employed, the other frequently used surface finishing
treatments are:
HONING
18
FLAMING
ANTIQUE FINISHING
SAND FINISHING
BUSHHAMMERING
CLEAVING
HONING:
Honing is an abrasive machining process that produces a precision surface on a metal work piece
by scrubbing an abrasive stone against it along a controlled path. Honing is primarily used to
improve the geometric form of a surface, but may also improve the surface texture.
FLAMING
Stone flaming machine is used in flaming treatment for flaming the granite slab, stone slab,
marble slab and other flamed slabs
ANTIQUE FINISHING
The Antique finish is produced by first applying a thermal finish, and then a brushed finish to
smooth out the characteristics of the stone structure
SAND FINISHING
In plastering, a textured final coat, usually containing sand, lime putty, and Keene's cement
A smooth finish derived from rubbing and sanding the final coat.
BUSHHAMMERING
A hand or power hammer that has a serrated face with many pyramidal points
A bush hammer is used to dress concrete or stone
19
CLEAVING
A cleave in an optical fiber is a deliberate, controlled break, they use some type of cleaving
technique to trim the fiber to its proper length, and produce a smooth, flat perpendicular end face
STEP 6 CUTTING
The cutting phase is the most important phase, since the final product can assume the most
different shapes customized on each client's specifics.
Paulin Granites has 2 cutting machines for diamond disk cutting and an automatic CAM molding
machine.
"CUT-TO-SIZE" POLISHING
It is often necessary to re-polish pieces after their cut to make them perfect. A special machine is
dedicated to this process.
FINAL QUALITY CONTROL
Making remarkable projects imposes a severe quality control of manufacture and materials, so
that each piece of product receives the finishing though by hand and it is marked on its back by
its identificative number so as to be properly set in the assembly plan of each project

Paulin granite offer their clients with impeccable packaging options for their entire product range
For this , company’s experts make use of quality materials that are approved by the governing
bodies, they also make sure that the products are completely safe and undamaged while being

20

services for the slabs that they offer. These slabs are packed in separate polystyrene sheets or
plastic film to avoid scratching of slabs, which are packed face to face. Further, these are packed
in strong wooden crates to ensure complete safety of the products during transportation.

COMPETITORS22
Granite stands as a competitor against Granite in the first place itself. The competition might
come as a result of cost price differentiation or traveling & distribution charges differentiation or
due to its availability or due to the differentiation in quality & type or may be even demand &
requirement of customers.
Other substitutes of Granites are marbles, limestone, kota stone, sandstone, slates, natural stone
& other artificial stones such a sacrificial tiles, artificial marble, artificial granite etc.
Apart from that, the Granite cost is depending upon the colour and size.
The demand for artificial granite may go high from the customer’s side due to the varieties
available in that as that granite slab can be molded according to the manufacturer’s choice.
But then again, there are about 100 various colors available for granite which then can make
customers move for granite if they are looking for color choices.

FINAL PRODUCTS
25
The market rate of granite is common for commercial quality. In market rate for this material the
rate may goes upper or lower as per the quality. Further variations in price can range from Rs.
100 to 1500 Per sq. foot of granite
Currently, the commercial material in market is sold in cubic meter for the ‘Thappi’ (slabs) but if
the cut size is to be sold, the rate goes down. Now a day there are no rates due to cracks of slabs.
The slabs which are cracks, entrepreneur has to get them made in sizes. The sizes are always
made perfectly as under:-
SIZES PRICE
1ft x 2ft 50-150
2ft x 2ft 75-200
2 ½ ft x 2 ½ft 100-1500
Mostly, these sizes are always demanded by the customers & their rates also go as per sizes but
at lower rate than Thappi. Thappi means the slab which is sawed from block & it is fresh
without crack as per sizes of block. The rest sells in the shape of slabs & handicrafts. Granite
blocks are always sold in cubic meter.
