God sings his song over us

“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty

Warrior who saves. He will take great

delight in you; in his love he will no longer

rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with

singing.”

Zephaniah 3:17 NIV

God sings His song over us

“For you created my inmost being; You knit

me together in my mother’s womb. I praise

you because I am fearfully and wonderfully

made; Your works are wonderful, I know

that full well.”

Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV)

We are created in God’s image

• Designed to be kings and priests in the

Kingdom of God

• Sin brought in sickness, death and decay

• Our dominion mandate now is to reclaim our

original mandate over God’s creation

“The creation itself will be liberated from its

bondage to decay and brought into the

glorious freedom of the children of God.”

Romans 8:21

We know from experience

• There is so much accumulated hurt in our hearts

• Our hearts need healing to be fully present to the presence of God in our spirits

• Sinful habits continueto plague our lives –when our hearts arenot fully healed we‘role play’ with variousmasks

Two perspectives

“Since my people are crushed I am crushed; I

mourn and horror grips me. Is there no balm in

Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then

is there no healing for the wound of my people?”

Jeremiah 8:21-22

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares

the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm

you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11

Foundations for ministry

• The foundation is the Word of God

• We are subject to the laws of God, whether or

not we believe in them

• God did not make one law for physics and

another for morals and the spirit

• He made one basic law that’s eternal

• When we disobey God’s law, we set in motion

forces that (without God’s intervention) must

be reaped by simple, impersonal law

Four eternal laws

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged.

Do not condemn, and you will not be

condemned. Forgive, and you will be

forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A

good measure, pressed down, shaken

together and running over, will be poured

into your lap. For with the measure you

use, it will be measured to you.”

Born again

• Positioned with Christ

• Accepted in the beloved

• Imbued with the Holy Spirit

• Redeemed (freed from

the wages of sin)

• Justified (no curse of

the law)

• Made righteous (by

faith)

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Healed and transformed – why?

• Despite the cross – our carnal nature refuses

to stay dead – it springs back to life

“See to it that no-one comes short of the grace

of God; that no root of bitterness springing up

causes trouble, and by it many be defiled”

Hebrews 1:15

“First we need to take the log our of our own

eye”

Luke 6:42b-48

Prayer ministry

A journey of inner healing (body, soul and

spirit) in a person who has given their heart

to Jesus Christ. It is fundamentally a

journey towards healing

and wholeness of the

heart.

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Prayer ministry

It happens when a prayer minister and

the ‘counselee’ are lead by the Holy

Spirit into the subterranean mysteries

of the heart for the purpose of healing

and restoration of relationships. It is a

three-way process, we wait on the

Spirit, the prayer minister gently leads

and journeys as the counselee

responds to the voice of God.

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Trinity thinking

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he

has anointed me to proclaim good news to the

poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for

the prisoners and recovery of sight for the

blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim

the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up

the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and

sat down. The eyes of everyone in the

synagogue were fastened on him.

Luke 4:18-20

Transformation

Two sides to inner healing

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Elijah House Ministry principles

• It is the power of the cross, through the

Holy Spirit and by the truth of God’s

Word, that works to bring lasting healing

and restoration to the family

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Role of the prayer minister

• Prayer ministry does not perfect us, make

us better people, or improve us. It applies

the death we have already died in Christ

Jesus (positionally when we received

Christ as Saviour)

• We do not put new patches on old

garments

• God does not want to repair us – He

wants to slay and resurrect us

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

What prayer ministers do

• Are evangelists to unbelieving areas of believers’ hearts. (Heb 3:12)

• Apply the cross and resurrection life of Jesus to each area of the heart as it becomes ripe

• Pray aloud with the person

• Shepherd the soul, leading people into fullness of death and resurrection (loving others to life)

• Hear confession of sin (Jam 5:16)

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

What prayer ministers do

• Give assurance of forgiveness (John 20:23)

• Act as God’s pruning shears

• Bind and loose (Mat 16:19)

• Sometimes do deliverance (Mat 12:43-45)

• Distinguish between flesh and demons

• Flesh is not cast out; flesh is taken to the cross

• Demons are to be found and cast out, but we

invite more trouble if the house of flesh is not

dismantled

• Help adjust new growth (Eph 4:11-13)

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Honour the heart

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Honour the heart

• We reason in our hearts (Luke 5:22)

• We discern and understand from the heart (1 Kings 3:12)

• The heart is the dwelling place of our true beliefs…it is from the heart that we believe and are justified (Rom 10:9)

• A man’s heart reflects the man (Prov 27:19)

• We bring forth good things from the good treasure of the heart (Matt 12:35, KJV)

• Sin is an issue of the heart (Matt 15:19)

• Each sinful practice of the old nature is actually an area in which our heart has not fully believed and appropriated the Good News (1 John 3:6, NIV)

BEHAVIOURS THAT MAKE

OR BREAK

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Why our hearts get stuck in pain

• How do I respond?

• How can I protect my heart?

• How can I keep going when my heart is

breaking?

• How can I protect myself so this won’t

happen again?

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• Affection/love

• Affirmation/peace

• Acknowledgement/acceptance

We all need the 5As

Without relationship/belonging

• Deep roots of shame and rejection develop and are woven into the very identity of a child

• Our hearts and spirits are wounded at core level

• Our mind can refuse to deal with the pain and bury it

• Rejection and shame are at the root of manyphysical illnesses, so much so that the body begins toreject itself

“You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; Allmy enemies are before you.Scorn has broken my heartand left me helpless.”Psalm 69:19-20a

How we respond

Sinful responses

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• It’s a lie we believe about ourselves

• It can be imputed to us by

• Lies that are spoken

• Neglect, unmet needs

• Abandonment and

rejection

• Trauma (abuse)

• Lies we tell ourselves

and believe

• Cultural influences

Shame

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• We believe shame’s lies

• I am unworthy

• I am unlovable

• I am a failure

• I am stupid

• I am an object to be

used

• I am a disappointment

Foundational lies

5 sinful ways we respond

• We deny our heart

• We harden our

heart

• We protect our

heart

• We medicate our

heart

• We disguise our

heart

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

We deny our heart

• Minimise, forget, deny the past

• Deep pain that is unacknowledged and remains unresolved

• Denial can lead to dissociation

• Unshed tears poison and the scream inside affects our soul

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• Through anger

• Blaming God

• Holding on to bitterness

• Self pity

• Refusal to forgive

“The trouble with steeling yourself against the harshness of reality is that the same steel that secures your life from being destroyed secures your life also from opening up and being transformed.”

(John Eldridge: Wild at Heart, Nashville, 2001, 137)

We harden our heart

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

“The worst thing you

can do for your

health is to deny,

block or suppress

emotions, whether

they are good or

bad. This makes

them extremely

toxic.”

(Dr Caroline Leaf)

We protect our hearts

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

We medicate our hearts

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• Roles

• Pride

• False humility

• Shyness

• Fight or flight

We disguise our hearts

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• Bitter root judgment

(as a spiritual level)

• Bitter root

expectancy (at a

physiological level)

• Inner vow

Sinful responses of our hearts

Bitter roots

“If our roots are bitter, we drink harm to ourselves.

See to it that no-one comes short of the grace of

God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes

trouble, and by it many may be defiled.”

Hebrews 12:15

“And even now the axe is put to the root of the trees;

every tree then which does

not give good fruit is cut

down, and put into the fire.”

Matthew 3:10

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• The result of our sinful reactions to hurt,

including critical, condemning judgements

of people and the refusal or inability to

forgive someone

• These roots have the ability to defile

many, including ourselves – poison

instead of nourishment

• It does not judge the behaviour but judges

the person

Bitter root judgement

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Bitter root judgement

“You, therefore, have no excuse, you who

pass judgment on someone else, for at

whatever point you judge another, you are

condemning yourself, because you who

pass judgment do the same things. Now

we know that God’s judgment against

those who do such things is based on

truth.”

Romans 2:1-2

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• Bitter root judgements infect the mind with expectancies at a psychological level – a negative perception about the way we will be treated and/or the way that life will go

• We become like the very thing we judge OR we draw people to us that will continually wound us in this way.

• Our wounds defile and dishonour other around us – wounded people wound others

Bitter root expectancy

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• Determinations or promises to ourselves that don’t really protect us – they imprison us

• These are more powerfulthan bitter root judgements

• Inner vows made duringformative years are oftenforgotten and have morepower due to theirunconscious and hiddennature

Inner vows

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Inner vows

• Inner vows refuse change and take on a life of their own• Defensive flight mechanisms

• Automatic angers

• Actions and words thattrigger automatic actions

• Anxieties and fears

• Examples of inner vows• I will meet my own needs

• I will never be vulnerable

• I won’t need anything

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• Judgement: Mum and dad never take care of me

• Expectancy: I am on my own; I won’t be taken care of

• Inner vow: Therefore, I will meet my own needs/ I’ll find someone who will meet my needs/ I’ll be strong/ I won’t need anything/ I will take care of myself/ I won’t let people see my needs.

• Judgment: Life is horrible

• Expectancy: Things will never change/ something bad will always happen to me

• Inner vow: Therefore… I will give up/ I will always have to be on guard/ I won’t allow myself to feel this pain/ I won’t remember/ I won’t forget!

• Judgment: Women are critical and nag

• Expectancy: Women will belittle me

• Inner vow: I’ll never share with them/ I’ll never let her see my weakness/ I’ll never forgive her.

Inner vows

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Structures and strongholds

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• We build structures or habits of mind around an inner vow

• A powerful stronghold results creating a kingdom of ‘self’

• Sinful habits, patterns, addictions, compulsions are the fruit of such strongholds

“In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.”Ephesians 4:26-27

Structures and strongholds

FREEDOM AT LAST

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

How can our hearts heal?

• We need to

• Be willing to hit the re-start button

• Plug into the anointing of the Holy Spirit

• Hear God, hear His voice and do what He

says

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Spiritual “fracking!”

“This is what the Lord says, If you repent I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless words, you will be my spokesman.”Jeremiah 15:19b

“Is not my Word like fire, declares the Lord andlike a hammer that breaksa rock in pieces.”

Jeremiah 23:29

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

The Five Rs

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Recognise

• Raising our awareness

of the present ‘fruit’

and its earliest ‘root’

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Recognise

“For the word of God is alive and active.

Sharper than any double-edged sword, it

penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit,

joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts

and attitudes of the heart.Nothing in all

creation is hidden from God’s sight.

Everything is uncovered and laid bare

before the eyes of him to whom we must

give account.”

Hebrews 4:12-13

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Recognise

• Identify current problems/issues/patterns

• Acknowledge past wounding

• Identify and label accompanying emotions

• Acknowledge wrong/sinful responses and

be accountable for them

• Connect the dots between past and

present because of the law of sowing and

reaping and multiplication

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Repent

• To repent means to ‘turn around’

• A change of mind, heart and direction

• There needs to be a true appreciation of

how we have hurt

others, ourselves and

God in order to repent

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Repent

“Return Oh Israel to the Lord; your sins have been your downfall! Take WORDS with you and return to the Lord! Say to him, "Forgive all our sins and graciously receive us, so that we may offer you the fruit of our lips.”

Hosea 14:1-2 NIV

“Therefore, confess our sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”

James 5:16

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Repent

• We agree that we need to confess

• Before God

• Another person…and

• The one we have hurt or offended

(if appropriate and

possible)

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Repent

• We repent of a judgment

• We renounce a vow

• We come out of agreement with a lie

• We ask God to forgive us for these

responses

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• Those who have wounded us

• Ourselves…and

• God

“Bear with each other and forgive one

another if any of you has a grievance

against someone. Forgive as the Lord

forgave you.”

Colossians 3:13 NIV

Release through forgiveness

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

• In Gethsemane, Jesus transcends time and space to become us in order to take the punishment which the Law prescribed. In accepting Jesus’ death as my own, I can reap for myself His righteousness. As I identify with the person I am forgiving I can feel their pain, and my part in that pain and my part in temptingthem to wound me. As Ienter that Garden, I connectmy mind, body and heartwith the Lord and the rest ofsinful humanity and we canhave compassion foranother’s sin in the contextof the broader sin ofhumanity in which we all share.

“If you do not forgive others their sins our Father will not forgive you.”Matthew 6:5

• Kaphar means to pardon, cover, purge, atone

• Naga means lifting up, carrying, taking away of a burden

• Salach means divine restoration of an offender into favour

Release through forgiveness

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Release through forgiveness

• By myself, I cannot forgive, but for your sake Lord, as an act of will, I give you any right I felt was mine to throw people into a debtor’s prison. Lord I release them. I forgive them for…

• Before You and this person as my witnesses, they owe me nothing. I often want those who hurt me to hurt as I did; to know the enormity of what they have done to me and I want them to be sorry, but vengeance is yours so forgive me for trying to take your place. I will not pretend that it was ok or that it did not hurt or matter. Thank you for listening to my pain and providing forgiveness for my healing.

just and will forgive us our sins and purify

us from all unrighteousness.”

Reckon as dead

“So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.”

Romans 6:11 NIV

“Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception”

Ephesians 4:21-24 NLT

“For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”

Romans 8:2 NIV

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

“Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.”

Speak words of life

• Affirm and establish what God has done• Ask the Holy Spirit to seal the heart work• Ask the Holy Spirit to comfort and strengthen• Pray for revelation to the personal spirit; for recharging

the joy centre of the brain• Pray healing and strength to the body• Pray for restoration to the soul

through mind, emotions and will• Pray for proper alignment of

spirit, soul and body• Remind Satan that he has no

legal ground for falseaccusation

• Provide helpful suggestions/scriptures for accountability anddisciplines to facilitate newhabits, rewiring the brain!

© 2017 Pauline Guthrie

Our mind

• Our mind is not what our brain does

• Our brain will do what the mind says

• Our spirit, led by the Holy Spirit, controls our soul

(mind/will/emotions)

• We must bring toxic thoughts into captivity (2 Cor 10:5)

• Renewing the mind takes continual persistence

• Change is based on regular exercise of the brain

• Thinking fires the brain in different patterns and

combinations – when we make the brain fire differently,

we change the brain

• Precepts of scripture are the overarching and

undergirding foundational framework of our lives
