A look at localbusinesses andtheir progress

over the last year.

Physical Therapy Central, located at 1600 Airline Road, is beginning its fifth year of operation. The clinic is owned by Kahn Nirschl, PT, DPT, OCS and he has sought to bring the best therapists, staff, and equipment to meet the diverse needs of Garvin County.

Currently the clinic is undergoing an expansion to add an additional 3,200 feet to the clinic, which when completed will total 6,000 square feet. A virtual tour of the clinic can be taken on the web at http://host.newspin360.net/cityofPV/ptcentralpv/ for those interested in seeing the clinic firsthand.

The clinic itself is equipped to meet the needs of a diverse patient population. No matter what your injury is, the highly trained physical therapists at Physical Therapy Central can come up with a treatment plan to help you overcome your injury. This is done by utilizing state of the art equipment to decrease inflammation, such as 24 hour iontophoresis and game ready units. This is coupled with the “hands-on care” that is the hallmark of the physical therapists at Physical Therapy Central.

Additionally, utilization of the most recent and advanced exercise principles and equipment help patients reach their full potential during their rehabilitation.

Flexibility is also something that sets Physical Therapy Central apart from other clinics. The clinic tailors every aspect of the patient’s treatment from the first time they walk through the door. A wide array of early morning, lunch, and late evening appointments are available.

A patient’s treatment program is tailored to their goals, capabilities, and special needs. Every patient is treated as an individual, and the clinic is extremely responsive to patient feedback. If there is any portion of their treatment that can be improved or enhanced, steps are taken by the staff to

ensure that it is done.

Physical Therapy Central is also highly regarded among referring doctors for the types of outcomes that the physical therapists are able to achieve for their patients. So much so, that patients at Physical Therapy Central come not

just from Garvin County, but from all over the state. For example, the clinic has patients who drive in for physical therapy from as far away as Weatherford, Norman, and Oklahoma City.

Physical Therapy Central has had success in treating the professional athlete to the weekend warrior, patients

with post-operative conditions such as knee replacements and rotator cuff repairs, overuse syndromes such

as shoulder, elbow, and knee tendonitis, balance disorders, neurologic conditions such as stroke and cerebral palsy, spinal conditions, occupational injuries, injuries in relation to car accidents, and

anything and everything in between.

If you are living with pain or a limited lifestyle secondary to an injury or disease process, please give the

expert staff at Physical Therapy Central a call to see how the physical therapists can get you back to work, back to play, back to life.

When the Oklahoma Tourism’s popular weekly program “Discover Oklahoma” wanted to do a story on Ballard’s Drive-In four year ago, the producers wanted to highlight a Pauls Valley tradition.

For over 57 years Ballard’s Drive-In has been a popular destination point for travelers and Falls Creek campers every summer.

Owned by Johnny and Ouida Ballard, the drive-in was established on September 1, 1951, and the popular eatery still offers some of the same services and products that made it a popular spot for customers over the last five decades.

“I still take orders out to customers. I might very well be the oldest car hop in the country,” owner Johnny Ballard said.

“And we still make old-fashioned cherry limeades with squeezed limes, simple syrup and carbonated water. We have hand-made malts and shakes and are one of the few places around that makes peanut butter shakes.”

The drive-in is presently located west of Pauls Valley near Interstate 35, but for several years was a familiar site for the many people who traveled through Pauls Valley on state Highway 19.

“I bought the business when it was located about where the Pauls Valley Public Library is now. Back then it was called Ballard’s Dairy Queen. We stayed there for 22 1/2 years; then our lease ran out on the property,” Ballard recalled.

“I looked for another place in town to move the business but I couldn’t find one I liked, so I moved out here beside the interstate in March of ‘74.”

Despite his age - “39 and holding” - Ballard doesn’t let anything slow him down as he continues a work schedule that would exhaust a man 20 years his junior.

“We have 24 drive-up stations outside and 18 booths inside which seat between 75 and 80 people. I still come open up every day and work seven days a week.”

Delivery from Open to Close

Mazzios Pizza, has become a tradition in Pauls Valley.

Opened in 1982 by Mazzios corporation the restaurant quickly became one of the many popular eateries in our town.

The variety of the menu has constantly grown to meet the changing tastes of the towns people.

We are still making three kinds of dough fresh every day in Mazzios, and the food quality is second to none.

Whether it be dine-in, carry out or delivery, we try to meet everyone’s changing needs.

Some things change and some things stay the same. Donnie Pendley, the restaurant’s manager during most of the 1990s, has returned to be the major operator of Mazzios in Pauls Valley. He has returned to his roots ready to take care of all his customers past, present and future.

Pauls Valley has been good to Mazzios and we appreciate all the loyal people that have been coming to our place of business for over a quarter of a century and look forward to meeting new people who may not have tried us.

Thank you Pauls Valley!

Striving for Excellence

Mid-America Technology Center (MATC) held its first classes in the fall of 1971 with 17 partner schools being served and these students had the option of choosing from 13 programs of study. Today, MATC’s district includes 20 partner schools and several private schools throughout central Oklahoma and our offerings have expanded to more than 90 Career Majors. Of these 90-plus Career Majors, 25 of them are “primary” Career Majors belonging to 11 different Career Clusters.

In addition to the Career Majors, MATC still offers approximately 180 short-term adult day and evening classes, Industry and Safety Training, employees a full-time Oil and Gas Safety Specialist, actively participates in the Oklahoma Manufacturing Alliance, provides Leadership Mid-America (LMA), and has one of the premier Business and Industry Councils in Oklahoma.

MATC also has a primary Cooperative Alliance with Oklahoma City Community College, and secondary Cooperative Alliances with Redlands Community College and Panhandle State University.

These alliances allow MATC students to co-enroll at the college and receive college credit for the classes they are taking at MATC.

All in all it is evident that Mid-America Technology Center is continually working to provide excellent service to our patrons, whether they are high school students, adults, or businesses and industries.

We value these relationships and want to continue to strengthen them by “Striving for Excellence!”

Mazzios Pizza a Pauls Valley Tradition

Years of work by many paid off in a big way when it was announced earlier this year that Pauls Valley had received a multi-million dollar grant that will pay for the construction of a new 36,000-plus square foot local community recreation center.

The announcement came in January from members of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation Board of Trustees. It came after members of a local recreation committee worked for more than four years to make the grant — totaling nearly $8 million — a reality.

Now that it is a reality, committee members like Allen Eubanks and City Manager James Frizell believe the future recreation center represents something special for Pauls Valley.

“We view this as the most significant, wide ranging, infrastructure construction that has ever been undertaken in our town,” said Allen Eubanks.

“It will impact ever spectrum of our community. It will have the opportunity to touch everybody in our town,” Eubanks said. “This is more than big time. This puts a big town amenity in our little quaint town.

“There’s not any one thing that we could do best, $8 million in, and touch as many lives as we’re going to able to touch with this center.” Frizell echoes his partner’s comments.

“We are so excited for our town. There is no other single investment that could be made in Pauls Valley that will have the impact on everyone in our city as the Donald W. Reynolds Community Recreation Center will have,” Frizell said.

The capital grant given the foundation board’s approval was actually for $7,996,554.

“The Pauls Valley Recreation Committee and city administration have done a remarkable job in planning the new community center,” said Fred W.

Smith, chairman of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.“We believe the collaborative and comprehensive nature of the planning

process will assure that this facility serves the needs of the citizens of Pauls Valley for many years to come,” he said.

The design and layout of the center will include a double gymnasium, an elevated indoor walking/running track, a weight and cardiovascular training room, an aerobics room, a multi-purpose room, day care facilities, indoor and outdoor play areas, a birthday room, common areas, locker rooms, snack bar, front desk, offices, storage and mechanical areas along with all of the necessary furniture and equipment to operate the facility. The center will be operated by a two- to four-member full-time staff and 10 to 30 part-time employees.

With the approval now official, the next step is for a construction management agreement between the foundation board and Pauls Valley

Municipal Authority. Expectations are for that agreement to possibly come in February.

“I doubt that we will see construction start before this time next year,” Eubanks said.

Hopes are for construction crews to break ground for the new center by sometime this fall.

The building is also designed to allow for a Phase II addition of a 30,000 square foot outdoor aquatics area as well as a Phase III expansion of the indoor facilities.

Already underway is a fundraising campaign for the outdoor pool project.

The goal is to raise enough funds to enable the construction of the outdoor pool to begin within two years of completing the recreation center.

The operations of the center itself will be funded by the fees collected from users, renters and sponsors as well as a subsidy from the Pauls Valley Municipal Authority.

Cook Carson is local people doing business with local people when it comes to their appliance sales and service needs.

A “Scratch and Dent” dealer for GE for the state of Oklahoma, they provide full set-up and service for a market that covers Garvin County and beyond.

The local family-owned Cook Carson caters to all appliance needs including the builder and remodeler market.

Cook Carson was established locally in June 1976. It started on Paul Street and then moved in 1979 to the building Rapid Roberts is in now. Next came a move in 1985 to its present location at 300 South Chickasaw.

For all those years Cook Carson has provided the area with sales, service and parts for appliances; installations specializing in built-in ovens, cook tops and all built-in appliances; complete installations; factory authorized warranty repair with factory trained technicians.

“We do the complete job,” said Jim Jones.

The owners of Cook Carson are Jim and Vida Jones. Cook Carson employees are Jim and Vida Jones, Chad Jones, Scotty White, Patty Jones and Jessica Young. All employees are professionals and properly insured.

Prices on all products are clearly marked. You pay what the price on the tag reads, plus the tax. The goal of the business is to provide better service in an environment where service is not always the emphasis.

“Most dealers and big box stores just push sales. We are here after the sale with all your parts, service, accessories and any questions you might

have. Our emphasis is service with complete customer satisfaction,” said Jim Jones.

The brands sold are Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid and Hotpoint. The “Scratch and Dent” department covers GE and Hotpoint. Whirlpool and KitchenAid are not on the program, but the prices on the appliances are competitive with anyone in the state.

Jim and crew continues to educate themselves monthly through training classes from the factories to ensure that they are staying up with the current advancements in the appliance trade.

Cook Carson is one of the largest independent service companies in Oklahoma.

Cook Carson receives all scratched and dented GE and Hotpoint products along with wrong colors, freight damage

and dealers going out of business. Any merchandise returned by dealers comes to Cook Carson not back to GE.

Appliances are then sold at a discount price with a new warranty. They back the product with a full service department.

We also have easy financing and future plans are to enlarge our show room to accommodate new top brands that are available to us.

“As always since 1976 our only job has been to satisfy your appliance needs,” Jim adds. “And we do that quite well.”

Cook Carson can be reached by phone at 405-238-7316 or by fax at 405-238-2744. Their web site is www.cookcarson.homeappliances.com.

PEC brings thE PowEr homETraditionally when you think of an electric company, you think of the wires

and poles along the road that bring the electricity to your home.

That’s exactly what People’s Electric Cooperative (PEC) has been and done since it was established in 1938 by 10 pioneering men who sold 2,000 $5 memberships in the nonprofit corporation.

Originally, 125 miles of line were constructed to serve approximately 470 consumers in Coal, Hughes and Pontotoc counties.

Today, PEC maintains more than 4,600 miles of line in 11 Southeastern Oklahoma counties serving over 14,000 members. Other PEC facts include:

• 5 Directors on Board of Trustees• 56 full time & 51 part time employees • 12,169 residential members• 1,888 commercial members• 11 large power consumers• 2 municipals and government authorities• 2005 Gross Receipts Taxes = $542,975.61

While People’s Electric Cooperative continues to deliver reliable and affordable electricity to its members just as it has for over 67 years, it has also looked beyond electricity to develop an array of other products and services to meet the needs of its 14,000 members/owners.

Whether it is heat pump financing or UPS systems to protect computer equipment, PEC listens and responds when its members have a need.

Today, qualified PEC members can buy heat pump systems and pay for them monthly on their electric bills.

Similarly, PEC sells and finances generators for its members to provide power during those times of unavoidable power outages.

In addition, PEC has programs designed to protect appliances and electronic equipment in members’ homes.

Surge suppression is available through PEC’s HomeGuard Defender Plus Surge Suppression Program. This equipment protects against power surges caused by lightning strikes or objects that come into contact with electric lines.

And, UPS Systems available from PEC protect against the loss of information on members’ computers, which sometimes occurs during blinks.

PEC was established to provide a service, electricity, to rural residents of southeastern Oklahoma which they otherwise could not have.

Today, more than 67 years later, PEC is still meeting this need with reliable, affordable electricity ... and so much more!

Bucking the trend of many school districts its size, Whitebead School has not only survived, it has flourished. Whitebead serves an area that once was a thriving frontier community before Pauls Valley was established and platted.

The area declined like many rural communities and the district was forced to close its high school, but kept serving the lower grades as a dependent school district.

This is because it is a single site preschool through eighth grade school district. It has no high school and is “dependent” on other independent school districts to complete the students’ education.

Whitebead’s student population began to once again rise in the late 1980s.

The facility, nestled west of Pauls Valley, boasts intense teacher-student interaction, activities and a progressive curriculum that has helped it receive state, regional and national acclaim.

The best evidence of that acclaim came when Whitebead was named a Blue Ribbon School, one of only two schools in Oklahoma selected for this honor in 1999.

The award is given annually by the U.S. Department of Education to those schools meeting the departmentís rigorous research-based criteria for overall excellence.

Only one other dependent school district had ever been selected nationally for this honor.

Whitebead School has also received national recognition for its reading curriculum.

Schools selected for this honor had to show success in a wide range of areas including professional development, opportunities for all children to meet proficient and advanced levels of performance, coordination with other programs, curriculum to support achievement of high standards, and partnerships among schools, parents, and communities.

Whitebead students continue to meet or exceed the performance of their peers in similar-sized districts as well as state averages.

Students not only get attention from the low student-to-teacher ratio, but also benefit from receiving instruction beyond the traditional one-year span.

Whitebead teachers in grades one through four move up a grade with their students, giving them the opportunity to teach the same group of students for two consecutive years. This fosters a degree of familiarity and closeness that often eludes teachers after just one year of instruction.

Whitebead also offers a full range of academic, athletic, social and musical activities.

Students can participate in sports such as football and basketball while also challenging their minds in academic competitions.

The diverse needs of the student population are determined by a comprehensive system of needs analysis, which involves students, parents and staff.

A blended services model, which promotes classroom community, is used to ensure the needs of diverse students are being met.

Offerings include small classes, two year looping in first through fourth grade, multi-age classes in preschool through fourth grade, nine sports teams, award-winning visual and performing arts programs, athletic and academic booster clubs, Spanish, student government, school service organizations, academic teams, all of which are important aspects of life at Whitebead School.

Principal Mary Smith feels the teaching profession offers an opportunity to have a meaningful link with the community.

“When one is engaged in friendly and purposeful work, there is an automatic sense of fellowship and community.”

Smith believes in strong community ties and parent-teacher partnerships.

‘If we are serious about improving the quality of education, we must commit ourselves to improving the ‘quality of life’ that is experienced moment by moment by those who are affected by schools, the physical, emotional, and academic health of our children - both at present and in the future - is our collective responsibility.

A big reason for the success of the longtime nursery and farm tree business is family as their three children — Monty, Kelly and Marcia Tadlock — are also involved.

“We are family owned and operated. All our children are partners in the business,” Bill and Cherie said.

“We have several grandchildren that work at the nursery”

In fact, a grandson, Monty, is studying at Oklahoma State University to be a landscape architect. He also oversees one of Marcums landscape crews.

“We are proud to be a part of an industry that strives to make our surroundings more beautiful for all people to enjoy.

As a way of continuing their push toward excellence and servicing their customers’ needs and demands, Marcums is constantly working to increase its selection of trees and shrubs.

Denzel and Betty Williamson opened Williamson’s Furniture in 1969. The furniture store, formerly known as Jackson’s, has been in operation ever since.

Some things have changed but one remains the same, “We’re still the store with the big red door where you always save more,” says Denny.

Denny joined his parents at the store in 1986 after his graduation from East Central University. In the summer of 1998 Denny purchased the store from his parents.

When asked about the success of the furniture store Denny replies, “We’ve experienced continued growth for over 20 years, and hope and pray it continues in the future. We know our customers; they’re our friends, neighbors and classmates. We depend on them, and they can count on us.”

In 2003, after the death of Denzel, a new face was added to the store, Denny’s wife Tina. After 15 years

of teaching, Tina decided to give the store a new touch with interior decorating, accent pieces and accessories.

Now a third generation of the Williamson family is joining the longtime PV furniture company as Denver, Denny and Tina’s son, has started working there. Denver graduated from ECU with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing.

Williamson’s is the same old store with a new look. Come in and see for yourself or find us on the web at www.williamsonsfurniture.com.

In this day and age of changing tax laws, it’s good to have someone who understands and keeps up with those changes. That’s the goal of the Pauls Valley H&R Block Company, located at 311 S. Chickasaw.

Brent and Annette Bullard have owned and operated the local tax preparation service since 1996. It is truly a family owned business as Brent’s mother, Judy Bullard, also works there.

“We offer tax preparation for personal returns as well as partnership, corporate, estate and fiduciary returns. We also offer bookkeeping and payroll services,” states Annette.

Annette adds their office also can handle farm returns and, “We can do state returns from any state — countrywide. Not all CPA’s can do this.”

Experience is the chief attribute for the Bullards. They know that when customers come to them with their income tax or bookkeeping patronage, they want someone who has the experience and knowledge to deliver quality service.

Before purchasing the H&R Block office, Brent and Annette worked in the Duncan office for four years. The Bullards also own interests in two H&R Block offices in Ardmore and Duncan. Judy Bullard has owned the Duncan office for nearly 30 years.

Annette is an “Enrolled Agent” for H&R Block. An enrolled agent is an agent that goes before the Internal Revenue Service for clients, in the event they are audited.

On top of their years of experience, the Bullards are constantly upgrading their computer programs and equipment to meet the challenges of income tax preparation. 2003 brought the third-largest tax cut in U.S. history, yet one out of four taxpayers believe the tax law changes will actually increase their taxes.

H&R Block tax professionals — such as the Bullards — are trained to provide advice about the credits and deductions people are entitled to - allowing them to save on their taxes now, and plan for the future.

Started in 1955 by Henry and Richard Bloch, H&R Block has grown to be the largest tax service company in the world, serving well over 21 million clients,

The Bullards are proud to be a part of that honored tradition and look forward to meeting all of your income tax preparation needs. Call Brent, Annette or Judy at 405-238-2266 to set up an appointment. To learn more about H&R Block, visit their web site at www.hrblock.com.

Edwards Canvas Covers the USAPauls Valley, Oklahoma - population 6,492, 60 miles from Oklahoma

City, 125 miles from Dallas-Ft. Worth - seems as though it is a remote place to operate a nationwide business, but Edwards Canvas, Inc. or ECI has been filling the Transportation Industry’s tarp and covering needs for over 50 years.

What started out as a one man operation in the ë50s has continually grown to 45 employees with a 30,000 square foot facility right off I-35 at the Pauls Valley exit.

Their nearness to 1-35 allows them to service all areas of the nation and average about 20 to 30 shipments a day to just about all the states in the USA.

“We also have trucks and trailers everyday from all across the nation stop to pickup orders or have a tarping system installed. We run our service department six days a week for added convenience.”

Besides the trucking industry, ECI has large recreational and agriculture product line. Every day we manufacture boat and trailer covers, tents, tipis, etc.

ECI lays claim to the “largest manufacturer of covers for livestock trailers in the USA,” with patterns for hundreds of trailers brands.

“We service just about all trailers manufacturers across the nation with tops and side curtains.”

Another recent product that has proven successful is large rollup barn curtains and windbreaks.

The large amount of horse facilities in Oklahoma and Texas has an enormous customer base, and keeps the ECI installation crew busy. Livestock shades and windbreaks are critical in feedlots and other livestock pens around a ranch, and ECI offers solutions with economical sun and windblocker fabrics made to order.

Growth of ECI is contributed solely to serving the customer, listening to their needs, taking care of their problems, and giving a good product for a more than fair price.

“No driver wants to tarp, it’s a hassle, and an added expense to them so we try and take some of the sting out of tarping by offering various tarping systems and fabrics that will perform and last, but leave some cash in their pockets,” says Tina Frost, sales manager.

“In short, our customers are the future of our business. Many of our competitors have tried to imitate us, but few have succeeded.”

ECI has a web site www.edwardscanvas.com to “get the word out.”

“The web site has helped in the areas of the country where no matter what you buy you have to get it shipped to you. This allows us to be competitive where price and shipping cost are involved.”

Also the web site has opened up the east and west coast where we are more than competitive in price and service.

Twenty years ago there were few “tarp companies” in this section of the USA, and most of the truck tarp companies were east of the Mississippi where it was more populated areas, but in the past several years more tarp shops have sprung up especially in the major metro areas.

This keeps us “on our toes” to keep growing and offering better products at competitive prices. In short - to give the truckers a reason to come to or call Pauls Valley, Oklahoma.

“It is great that we can run the size operation that we do from such a small town location and enjoy the lifestyle that it offers. But it kinda speaks for itself doesn’t it?”

Dedicated to being Your First Choice for Farm Credit

Congress chartered the Farm Credit System in 1916 to ensure a permanent source of reliable and competitive credit for the agriculture industry and rural communities throughout the country.

Farm Credit specializes in agricultural loans such as bare land, country homes, recreational property, livestock, operating expenses, and equipment. Because Farm Credit is a network of cooperatives, its stockholders are the people who borrow money from the Association.

The Association’s earnings are either retained for additional lending to agriculture or are returned to borrowers in the form of patronage. The patronage program serves as an “interest rebate” to borrowers. Either way, the benefit flows back to agriculture and rural America.

Also, as a cooperative, the Association operates under the direction of a board of directors elected by borrowers.

Farm Credit of East Central Oklahoma is a dependable lending source. The Association deals directly with individual borrowers, meaning its loans are not sold to some “other” lender. Farm Credit lending standards remain conservative, so its credit quality is exceptional.

The Association remains financially strong, has managed its growth and is not out-growing its ability to remain safe and sound.

Loan officers with agricultural experience understand the needs of farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses. Farm Credit of East Central Oklahoma’s employees have extensive experience and knowledge in agriculture and rural lending. And, the Association has 11 offices serving 51 counties across eastern and central Oklahoma.

-Dedicated to PV for over 50 Years-One good thing is that Sooner Home Furnishings in Pauls Valley is

still around and thriving after more than 50 years of hard work and lots of dedication by everyone involved - and most importantly, caring about customers who helped us reach this milestone.

Owned and operated by Harry, Ardith and Mark Thompson, and Amy and Mickey Brown, Sooner Home Furnishings is located in downtown Pauls Valley. Harry started the family-owned business as a television technician in October 1953, and by adding television sales later, the business has grown to what it is today.

In 1955, Harry and Ardith purchased the Tom Morehead Music Co. at 106 East Paul Ave. and added small appliances, records and sheet music to their sales. In 1967, the Thompsons moved to 103 E. Paul Ave. (after purchasing the building from the Art Burns family) and added the Whirlpool line of appliances. They remodeled the building in 1977 and added a complete line of furniture. Continuing to expand and diversify the business, 101 E. Paul Ave. was then added.

The Radio Shack Dealer franchise store became a reality in 1980, with sales increasing each year. The 107 E. Paul Ave. building was purchased in 1986 and is the showroom for bedding and bedroom furniture.

The wireless phone business is yet another area that deserves mentioning with such selections as Sprint, Jitterbug, Net 10, Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile.

Competitive in pricing and doing their best to give quality service to their customers, Harry and Ardith do this on a family basis. They have included their son, Mark, and their daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Mickey Brown, in the business. Jimmy Ray is a conscientious employee and strives to install and deliver merchandise with his focus on doing the right thing for the customers.

The Thompson family would like to extend their appreciation to the customers who have made their business a success over the past 55 years and look forward to serving the area in the future.

Sooner Home Furnishings is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information call 405-238-3334 or online visit www.soonerhome.com.
