A lot of kids at Gesu look forward toThursdays. Why? Because its Hot Lunch
Day.
Hot Lunch is a fundraiser for PTO, and
and funds raised are reinvested back into
Gesu, said Steve Eitenier, the hot lunch co-
ordinator, Hot Lunch helps PTO achieve its
mission of enhancing the education
environment of the school for the benefit of
our students, he said.
If you have been at Gesu for more than a
couple years you know that there have been
changes in the hot lunch program. Some kids
and parents wonder why we switched from
Papa Johns to Bambinos. According to Mr.
Eitenier, Gesu switched to Bambinos
because Papa Johns had a change in
ownership. Bambinos offered the best menu
and overall cost, he said.
Students Sarah Hack and Maddy Perry
wonder why we dont have hot lunch more
than one day week. Mr. Eitenier said PTO has
considered it, but the main hurdle is the
increased number of volunteers we would
need to manage the lunch room each day. It
would also be a bigger effort to coordinate the
order and payment processes.
Some students also said theyd like
more ethnic foods or pizza from different
places. This year, PTO did change the menu.
They added hotdogs, tacos, and juice boxes
and got rid of bread sticks and salad, which
werent big sellers.
Mr. Eitenier said that the problem with
having fast food is that those places dont
deliver. Also, PTO wants to keep a single
supplier to keep costs down.
What's up with hot lunch?

Extracurricularsthey can be anything
from musicals and plays to sports and chess club.
But the real questions are Do we really need
them? and Do we need more or fewer of
them?
Kamyah Nelson in 7R2 is involved in
stage crew for the musical. She believes that
extracurriculars make the school better. A lot of
people enjoy them and they give people things to
do after school. Cheerleading is a good sport and
a lot of people like it, she said. She wants
cheerleading to come back as a sport for Gesu.
Spring soccer should go, because we already
have fall soccer. Instead of two soccer seasons we
should get another sport.
Quentin Francis-Emonds in 7R2 is happy
with the sports at Gesu. He believes that Science
Fair should be a choice instead of mandatory.
Quentins favorite extracurricular is soccer
because he thinks its a fun sport. Quentin also
believes that we should be able to choose our
own musical. He is involved in soccer, the
musical, and newspaper.
Adrianna Reinhart in 3D plays baseball
and figure skates. She said she would add football
and volleyball for younger kids. She is happy
with all the sports at Gesu, but her favorite is
baseball. Gesu sports are important to her
because they give kids time to have fun and get
exercise.
Extracurriculars are important to most
Gesu kids. Overall they give kids something to do
and are fun. These three students hope
extracurriculars are here to stay.
Do we need more or
fewer extracurriculars?

About five years ago, Gesu had a
cheerleading team. But now we dont. Whynot?
According to Mrs Riehle, who was the
coach then, after the cheerleaders
graduated, no one was interested in making
a team the next year or the years after that.
In order to have a cheerleading team we
need at least six girls who are willing to
practice one to two times a week, Mrs.
Riehle said.
In the past, cheerleaders cheered at
girls and boys basketball games andfootball games. St. Francis cheerleaders
helped teach the team new cheers.
I think that there would be a lot of girls
joining the cheerleading squad," says Lauren
Perry, a sixth grader.
According to Mr. Tim Best, Gesus
athletic director, if Gesu wanted to start a
cheerleading team again, we would need anadvisor and money for uniforms.

Equipment 101By Mary Gerhardinger
You need all kinds of equipment for sports. And it can be expensive to purchase.
But if you take care of it, it will last a lot longer.
If you play sports at Gesu, you may sometimes get equipment from the school.
Gesu provides things like jerseys, balls, and football pads.
What they dont provide is mouth guards, helmets,
shoes, knee pads, socks, and shin guards. So where does all
the other equipment come from? Parents buy it.
Most people put very little pressure on their
equipment. In fact, this is why a lot of equipment lasts a
long time. And as Mrs. Organ, Gesus physical education
teacher, puts it:
I make it last.
Mrs. O said that if you put your equipment away properly
and use it correctly then it will last longer. How do you keep
your equipment in good shape? You can wash shin guards and knee pads for football and
volleyball!
If you want to clean your cleats, then the best thing you can do is to put
newspaper into them and let them dry out. According to Ehow.com, this is the No. 1
thing you can do to get rid of that horrible smell.
This is good because equipment is getting to be really expensive. How expensive is it?
Gesu spends a lot on equipment. Athletic director Tim Best told me that Gesu
spends about $2,500 a year. He said the most expensive equipment is probably for
football, but the equipment Gesu has to replace the most is for football and baseball.

Show ReviewsDance MomLifetime Network
If you like drama and dance,
this is a perfect show for you.
Dance Mom is a reality show about
a group of girls from ages six to
thirteen in a dance company. The
moms pay thousand of dollars a
year to make their daughters lives a
success. Most of the tension comes
from the parents. They get upset
when their daughter doesnt get a
chance to shine or they feel one of
the other girls is getting more
attention.
This show, which first aired in
July, is good for any age who likes
dancing. But parents need to be
careful about some mild language,
which is always bleeped out.

Ant FarmDisney Channel8 p.m. Friday
Ant Farm, a Disney Channel
sitcom that premiered last May, is a
great show to watch when youre
in a bad mood because its a lot of
fun. The series was created by Dan
Signer, a former writer and co-
executive producer ofThe Suite
Life On Deck. The characters are
China Anne McClain, Sierra
McCormick, and Jake Short,
middle-schoolers in a gifted
program called Advanced Natural
Talents or A.N.T. at Webster High
School in San Francisco.
China Anne McClain (played
by Chyna Parks) is an 11-year-old
music prodigy who has just
became the newest A.N.T. On her
first day of school, she meets
Sierra McCormick (Olive Doyle), a
girl who has a great memory, and
Jake Short (Fletcher Quimby), an
artistic genius. Jake develops acrush on Chyna and they become
best friends at the high school.
This show is not what I
normally watch. It doesnt talk
about things that happen every day
with kids. Its more about these
kids, who have a lot of talents, and
their relationships to their families
and each other. I recommend it
because of the shows funny
characters. It will keep youlaughing.

Music Review#1 Girl by Mindless Behavior
If you think you need some
cheering up in your life and you
want some music to speak to you,
then Mindless Behavior is right for
you! The R&B groups first CD is
called #1 Girl. They had their first
single My Girl in 2010. The
group consists of four teenagers--
boys named Prodigy, Roc Royal,
Ray Ray, and Princeton. The group
was started by Conjunction
Entertainment Inc. The four boys
were picked out of 600 kids.
Their music is great for
teenagers because for one, theyre
teens and they talk about things
teenagers talk about. All their music
is from experiences they had. Their
songs talk about things like fitting in
and finding the right one. It
makes me feel like they are
experiencing the same things we
are.
One of my favorite songs isMrs. Right, about how theyre
trying to find the right girl for them
and they are willing to go around
the world to find her. You can listen
to their songs and find out which
one speaks to you.
