Nurse’s Notes

In November we will be doing Hearing and Vision screenings for all 1st, 3rd & 5th grade students. Please make sure your children always wear their glasses to school.

Please remember to keep students at home when they are sick. This will prevent spread of illness and decrease the number of times your child gets sick. Please refer to the Henry County Schools Illness Policy in the Elementary grades Student and Parent Handbook on page 35.

It states: “If a child becomes too ill to remain in class, his/her parent will be contacted so that the child may be cared for at home. Children should not return to school until vomit, diarrhea, and/or fever free for 24 hours. Regarding fever, a child with fever (an oral temperature of 99.5 or higher with other symptoms of illness present OR temperature of 100.4 degrees regardless whether other symptoms are present) should stay home until they are 24 hours without having a fever (without the use of fever reducing medicine in that 24 hours). Parents are urged to keep the front office updated with current phone numbers so parents can be reached.”

PSYCH’ed OUT!

What is a School Psychologist? A School Psychologist is a type of psychologist that works within an educational system to help children with emotional, social, and academic difficulties (National Association of School Psychologists).

What does a School Psychologist Do? The School Psychologist (SP) is clinically trained to help students make the best of their education. The SP may also work with other educational staff to plan effective interventions and instructional accommodations for students with potential and diagnosed disabilities. Additionally, the SP is available to conduct psycho-educational evaluations and address eligibility for special education programs according to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) guidelines.

Although many referrals to the SP come from the Student Support Team (SST), parents also have the right under IDEA to contact their child’s school and request an evaluation in order to determine whether the child has a disability and is in need of special education and/or related services. If a parent request is made, parents should be aware that Georgia Rules for the IDEA eligibility require Response to Intervention data (RtI) in order to eliminate other explanations for student problems. If SST has been bypassed, the data will still need to be gathered, or the student may be found ineligible. In both cases, when RtI data is reviewed, if the student’s rate of progress is comparable to their grade level peers, that student may not be deemed a student with a disability even if they are performing below grade level.

If the student’s rate of progress is not comparable to their peers and further information is necessary, the SP will conduct an evaluation. During this process, many assessment instruments will be given and the results are generally reported in numbers that have little meaning to the parent until an explanation is provided. The SP will then work with the parent and the teachers to ensure an understanding of the results of the evaluation and the child’s strengths and weaknesses. The SP will also then facilitate the discussion about eligibility for special education services. (Excerpts taken from the Special Education Rules Implementation Manual)

Kindergarten News

Dear Parents,

We are so excited about the many different things our

kindergarten students are learning. In Language Arts

we are using and applying phonics skills to decode

words and write phonetically. Many students are

beginning to show quite a bit of progress with

learning sight words. We really appreciate the

support at home with helping your child to practice

their sight words. Social Studies encompasses

learning about maps and globes and identifying where

we are on the map. Day and night and things we see in the sky are the concepts we

are learning in Science. In Math, we are now beginning to build numbers 11-20

through composing and decomposing numbers as well as continuing to count objects

and count 1-100. All of the support you show is making a huge difference in your

child’s education and it shows. We thank you for the continued support!

GKIDS report cards were sent home to show your child’s progress in all areas. If you

have any questions, feel free to ask your child’s teacher.

All kindergarten classes will be performing a Thanksgiving play November 21st.

More information will be coming home soon and you will be invited to see this

wonderful performance.

KINDERGARTEN is the foundation for all learning!! :)

Sincerely,

The Kindergarten Teachers

First Grade News

CONGRATUALTIONS to our first grade poetry recitation winner Le’la Curry and the following participants:

Ayden Mederick, Taryn Williamson, Helen Austin, Eli Magcales, Carlos Williams! We commend you on your bravery and courage. We are so proud you all!!!

English Language Arts

The children did an excellent job summarizing key details of literary texts through our reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was amazing to see them compare the similarities and differences between the book and the movie. Our next literary text is Mr. Popper’s Penguins!

Mathematics: Unit 2 – Develop Base Ten Number Sense

We are continuing to develop base ten numbers sense by learning to rote count forward to 120 by counting on from any number less than 120, locate 0-100 on a number line, using the strategies of counting on and counting back to understand number relationships, exploring with the 99 chart to see patterns between numbers (such as, all of the numbers in a column on the hundreds chart have the same digit in the ones place, and all of the numbers in a row have the same digit in the tens place), and building an understanding of how the numbers in the counting sequence are related—each number is one more, ten more (or one less, ten less) than the number before (or after).

Social Studies: Exploring Our World

We have begun to explore our world in Social Studies. The students will identify and locate his/her city, county, state, nation, and continent on a simple map or a globe. They will also locate major topographical features of the earth’s surface (locate all of the continents: North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Antarctica, and Australia; locate the major oceans: Arctic, Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian) and identify and describe landforms (mountains, deserts, valleys, plains, plateaus, and coasts).

Science

Students will observe, measure, and communicate weather data to see patterns in weather and climate, identify different types of weather and the characteristics of each type, and investigate weather by observing, measuring with simple weather instruments (thermometer, wind vane, rain gauge). They are also recording weather data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) and correlating weather data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) to seasonal changes.

We are studying Georgia’s past in our social studies unit. The unit will cover people of the past such as James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, Mary Musgrove, and Sequoyah. We will be uncovering history by reading about Georgia’s first people—the Creek and Cherokee Native Americans. We will be studying rivers as well as colonist and their ancestors.

As we learn about farming and how the native people survived we will be making our own traditional vegetable soup! We need your help! Donations of canned or frozen vegetables such as corn, mixed vegetables, squash, peas, carrots, and tomatoes are greatly appreciated!

Third Grade News

In Math we are beginning our unit on Multiplication and Division. Please continue to review rounding, place value, and graphs at home. First In Math is a great way for students to practice their math facts at home.

In Social Studies we will be studying two more of our American Hero’s, Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass.

In Science we are finishing up our unit on Heat. Please ask your student the differ-ences between a conductor and an insulator? What are examples of each? What is temperature? What are the two units that are used for measuring temperature?

Our second field trip of the year will be on Nov. 3 to the Human and Civil Rights Museum in Atlanta. This awesome museum just opened last summer and we will be the first class from DES to visit the museum. Please return your permission slips to the teacher by Oct. 29. Students that purchased the 3rd grade packet have already paid for their field trip. If you did not purchase the 3rd grade packet, the cost of the field trip is $10.

Reminders
