P P a a w w P P r r i i n n t t s s Dear Lions Park Families, We have had a wonderful and productive first few days of school. I am enjoying getting to know you and your children. It will take me some time to get to know all the names, but I am already starting to recognize many faces. This is an amazingly positive and supportive school community. Below are a few thoughts as we begin the year: We are excited to have a Little Free Library outside Door 1. The idea behind this is that you can leave a book and take a book. It is a great way to explore new books. We will be having Safety Week at Lions Park next week. During this week, we will practice what to do in case of fire, tornado, bus evacuation or a need to lock down the building. Teachers will be talking with your children about the drills, but you may also want to talk with your children at home about the drills. Some children feel anxious and are reassured when they understand that we practice for emergencies in the same way that we prepare for tests, games and concerts. As was announced earlier this week, we will be providing classes with an opportunity to go outside and use special glasses to view the solar eclipse. Teachers will discuss the importance of keeping the glasses on at all times when observing the eclipse and remind students of the serious nature of this activity and how easily eyes can incur permanent injury when looking directly into the sun at any time. Bill Nye, the Science Guy has this advice: http://www.planetary.org/blogs/bill-nye/20170815-bill-nye-protect-eyes.html . It would be helpful to have parents and guardians discuss this extraordinary event and review eye safety with their children. We expect our students to listen carefully and keep their solar eclipse glasses on at all times. This is an educational opportunity we want to experience and explore with our students. As a precaution, we will not have recess or PE classes outside for the day. Please remember to fill out this form if you don’t want your child(ren) to participate. We will be doing some districtwide beginning of the year assessments starting next week. Next week students will take brief assessments to look at their reading fluency and math problem solving. The reading fluency test involves having students read three passages aloud for one minute per passage. The math problem solving test shows how many problems students can answer correctly in eight minutes. MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing will be the week of August 28th. Students will take two computerized MAP tests- one in reading and one in math. Each test takes approximately one hour. We are looking forward to back to school night on August 31st. The night will begin with a welcome and introductions in the gym at 6:30pm. The full schedule can be found at this link . Mrs. Hasselbring won’t be able to attend on parent night, so her classroom presentation will be on Wednesday, August 23rd at 6:30pm in her classroom. The parents of her students are still welcome to come for the welcome, introductions and to see the special area teachers. Please enter through Door 1 on August 31st and for Mrs. Hasselbring’s presentation. Our first PTO meeting this year will take place on Monday, September 11 th at 7 pm. I hope to see many of you there. We are so fortunate to have such an involved PTO, and we look forward to all of the events this school year. Please see the message from the PTO about how to get involved. We are looking forward to an outstanding year of learning for your children! A strong partnership between home and school is critical for student success. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time with questions or concerns.
