Well hello there ...

Since our first English Springer Spaniel joined our family almost three years ago, we have burnt out two cheap vacuum cleaners and collect-ed enough hair to weave and clothe a small family. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. Once ESS have you under their spell that’s it. Many will nod understandingly when they hear we now have two Springers. The dastardly duo, Bandit and Billy Baxter.

What better way to learn about this breed that has captured the heart of our family, than by taking on the role of Magazine Editor. A vehicle to share our passion with other Springer owners.

I hope readers swamp me with information, achievements, ideas and fun moments they share with their dogs, but I have a feeling most will be shy. Don’t worry I love nothing better than to talk. If you prefer to be the silent type, send me an email at [email protected].

Judges Remarks ... There are some things in life that you have to do at least once, and one of them is to go on a trip by yourself; which happened to be my first trip to Australia. From the moment that I arrived to the hotel, I had already planned to forget about the jetlag and begin to enjoy my stay. I took every tour I could in three days before I had to judge the ESS specialty. I was delighted by the Brisbane river tours, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, the Hop On and Hop Off sightseeing bus, the wonderful view of the city from Mount Coot-tha, walking around South Bank, eating and tasting the popular “flat white” ….. a few wonderful Australian wines too…..and the wheel of Brisbane, which I enjoyed very much and took wonderful pictures from there. I liked it so much that I plan to return to Queensland with my husband!!

After all of these activities I was still full of energy and very excited about judging the ESS specialty. The people from the club were very friendly and made me feel very comfortable. I was very happy to find different styles of dogs in the same ring. I found good quality with typical movement, good structures with good proportions and well sized dogs. Some heads better than others, but in general they had good proportions and good bites. I found that the eye color in many dogs was a bit light, but the overall quality of the dogs was good. I saw some very nice blends of Ameri-can and European lines too.

I was very satisfied with my BOB; a very sound dog with a beautiful outline and a great structure that allowed it to move effortless around the ring. My BOS caught my eye from the beginning; a very feminine, compact and well-built bitch with a beautiful head piece that moved effortlessly too. My Best Junior had a wonderful structure and movement. It was an American style with a nice head, correct proportions and a correct pelvis inclination that allowed it to have a correct tail set, which is rare to find in this style. My puppy winners were very sound and promising. ….I could have brought them back home with me.

Finally, I can’t avoid mentioning the wonderful sportsmanship of every handler and how polite they were. I am very grateful to have had the chance to judge in Queens-land.

Judge’s Remarks

I would like to thank the English Springer Spaniel Association of Queensland for

asking me to judge its Open show on June 11, 2016. I enjoyed my morning judg-

ing your dogs very much.

Some of you may not know I have owned two Oakspur Springers a few years

back, so this breed is very close to my heart.

Both my best dog and bitch were great movers and, although my dog Best Dog,

Sup Ch Reibey World Premiere (AI) was a great show dog as well, Aust Ch

Angel In The Sky Three Ponds Valley (Imp POL) was my Best Exhibit in

Show. A beautiful typey tri-colour bitch who as soon as she entered my ring, she

caught my eye. I am also looking forward to watching my reserve bitch

Ozdezign Simply Karma grow as I thought she was very promising, I was also

very happy to hear that she was sired by my Best Exhibit’s litter brother.

Once again thank you to the club for asking me to judge and to all the exhibitors for the entry and a very pleasant morning. Hope you all enjoyed it as much as I

did.

SPRINGER HEALTH ...

Ear Infections

Ear infections, often called Otitis Externa, are a common problem amongst our long eared dogs. If left untreated they can cause terrible pain and health problems.

Dog ear canals are long “L” shaped funnel-like tubes. Their shape pre-disposes them to collecting all sorts of debris and moisture. The most common causes of ear infections include allergies, heat, trapped moisture, ear mites, foreign material such as grass seeds, and excessive ear wax.

Symptoms of an Ear Infection:

Ears can look red and inflamed; and a black/brown or yellowish dis-

charge may be seen

Has a strong ‘doggy’ odour

Constant ear scratching, shaking of the head

Swelling around the ear

Whimpering due to discomfort

A loss of balance

Hearing loss

Unusual eye movements

Walking in circles or head tilting

Ear infections are diagnosed by clinical examination. In many cases ear

drops are all that are needed. If you suspect your Springer may have an

ear infection contact your local Vet for help.
