Pay attention to the following words. They are not in your book. Copy the definitions and examples for your notes. Sequence of events. The struggle that the character must face. There are 5 types of conflict: Man vs. ________________ 14. Dynamic character: A character that experiences inner changes or develops deeply as the story progresses. 15. Static character: A character that does not change or fails to grow as the story progresses. To determine a characters personality There are five elements to observe when profiling a character: Physical description Dialogue Actions Other characters reactions Personal thoughts/emotions Vivid description that appeals to the five senses. Provides details that the reader would be able to imagine to feel. No imagery I touched the tree. Imagery The trees rough bark fell apart as I ran my hand along its bumpy surface. A literary device of calling out to an imaginary, dead, or absent person, or to a place, thing, or personified abstraction. Example: "Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the sky." (Jane Taylor, "The Star," 1806) Close repetition of consonant sounds, usually at the beginning of words. Example: To sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock. A figure of speech in which a part represents the whole object or idea. Meaning: The head of the cow represents the entirety of the cow. head of cattle A figure of speech in which the name of some object or idea is replaced by another word, which has some relation. The White House is ruining our country. White House can mean the president, Congress, or some other branch of government. 37. PUN A play on words through sound and/or meaning. A statement in which, although self- contradictory, contains a basis of truth that reconciles the opposite meaning. In other words, the actors are overacting to make the audience laugh. A literary work, especially a play, that is less serious than a tragedy. A comedy usually has a happy ending. 45. Tragedy A drama in which actions and events turn out disastrously for the main character or characters. A central character in a drama who is dignified and noble. A tragic hero often possesses a tragic flaw. 46. Tragic flaw A tragic hero possesses a defect that contributes to his or her downfall. Flaws can range from poor judgment to too much pride or weakness. An actors or characters speech that is meant for the other actors and the audience to hear. 55. Soliloquy An actors or characters speech which reveals internal thoughts, not meant for other actors/characters to hear. The actor is unaware of the audience. A parody imitates or mocks another serious work or type of literature. The purpose of a parody may be to ridicule through bad humor. refers to the way words are arranged within sentences. Syntax encompasses word order, sentence length, sentence focus, and punctuation. Determines voice and imparts personality to the writing An explanation of the meaning or purpose of a piece of writing, especially one that is difficult to understand. Mnemonic tip: exposition to expose Expository writing seeks to expose information to an audience or a reader. A particular tendency or inclination, especially one that prevents unprejudiced consideration of a question. Opinionated; not objective In other words, a person already has an opinion on an issue. It will be difficult to persuade them otherwise. You were born into a society which spelled out with brutal clarity, and in as many ways as possible, that you were a worthless human being. You were not expected to aspire to excellence: you were expected to make peace with mediocrity.
