EXPERIENCE APA’S 32ND CONGRESS FROM THE CONVENIENCE
OF YOUR OFFICE
For the 5th year in a row, American Payroll Association is offering an oppor-
tunity to enhance your Payroll knowledge at your own convenience by attend-
ing VIRTUAL CONGRESS. This opportunity is for those that couldn’t
attend the 32nd Congress experience in Minneapolis this year as well as for
those that did attend and still need to collect additional RCHs.
VIRTUAL CONGRESS will give you the excitement and education of Live Congress at a fraction of the
cost. You can earn up to 8 RCHs by attending online. Take part in five new workshops, a general ses-
sion (I would suggest Walter Bond’s presentation…He was phenomenal), a game center, exclusive exhibi-
tor booths, video highlights from Live Congress and last but definitely not least…you will have many op-
portunities to interact with fellow attendees via the chat room.
VIRTUAL CONGRESS will be available On Demand from now until August 22nd, 24 hours a day – 7
days a week. If you are a member of National APA, your cost is $0.00. The price for a non-member is
$254.00. This is such a bargain that I hope you will take advantage of what is being offered.
Go to www.americanpayroll.org and REGISTER TODAY for the opportunity of a lifetime!!!
Sincerely,
Bonetta Bond, FPC
Chapter President

Overall Best Practices
“Attending Congress is a time to network with old friends and meet new ones.. Congress helps me stay up to date on the latest rules and
regulations impacting the payroll profession. The vendor hall provides a wealth of knowledge and technology to keep me informed.
Congress is also an opportunity to meet staff members and ambassadors from National APA who can help you get involved at the Nation-
al level through volunteering. I would highly encourage you to start building a business case with your manager to be able to attend the
33rd Annual Congress which will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas May 5—9, 2015!” - Lisa Wachter, CPP
“Every payroll professional has horror stories of payroll runs “gone bad”. The annual APA Congress truly is the place to “banish those payroll fears” and reduce the horror stories by providing countless educational and networking opportunities. Once again, this last con-gress did not disappoint. It proved to be invaluable in our day-to-day payroll world.” - Charlotte Frakes, CPP
“Congress your “One Stop Shop” for everything Networking, Education, Motivational, and Entertaining!” - Melinda Wiley, CPP
“Congress not only gives you an educational opportunity, but it gives you the opportunity to network with other payroll professionals to hear their perspective. We often get tunnel vision and only think of something in one way. We often do things a certain way be-cause that is the way it has always been done. Congress gives you a new perspective on the old ways and presents you will new ways, which are often more effective and efficient. Each year you make new contacts and get to reconnect with friends you only see once a year. It is invaluable to a payroll professionals continuing education.” - Kathy Pack, CPP
“One of my professional highlights of this year was attending the APA Congress in Minneapolis. The APA never fails to deliver current, relevant learning sessions for our profession, opportunities for networking with our peers nationwide, keynote speakers who deliver thought-provoking content, and after hours entertainment. The most meaningful takeaways for me came from the dis-cussions that ensued after the end of the workshops. We shared frustrations, common challenges, and solutions. We offered con-tinued support to each other. We’re good peeps.” —Michelle Bacher, CPP

long way to help this population get back on their feet
and receive the necessary shelter, food, care, and ser-
vices needed to disrupt cycles of poverty and provide
education about the issues of homelessness. Thank
you in advance for your generous gifts of time, mon-

On this day payroll professionals from all over the world will be out in force helping educate local high school students on how to
understand their paycheck, electronic pay, direct deposit, pay cards, tax withholding, and other deductions. You can be a part of
this exciting movement! National APA has already prepared the lesson plans and all you have to do is volunteer. National APA has
already published a volunteer form that can be found in the NPW section of the website. Once you complete the volunteer form
you will be able to download the materials. APA has even prepared a sample letter that you can use to start reaching out to your
local high school principals to inform them about NPW 2014 and request a time to teach the lesson. September 4th is designated as
Money Matters National Education Day; however, you can teach the lesson plan anytime during the month of September and still
qualify for 1 RCH credit.
High school kids generally do not receive this type of educational materials during the course of their high school career. As a result
there are many questions when they get ready to fill out that first set of onboarding paperwork. What is a W4 and how do I fill it
out? Why do I have to pay all of these taxes? What is the difference between gross pay and net pay? Let’s help educate our young
people by volunteering today.
Check out the quote on National APA’s website from our very on chapter member, Sherry Dwyer, Software Support and Training
Manager of Optimum Solutions “What a rush and a sense of accomplishment you feel after talking with students about their future
and understanding their paychecks. It was so interesting to see the students’ reaction when they realized the differences in a
paycheck based on the types of taxes and the number of taxes deducted.” Don’t delay in completing your volunteer form because
next year’s quote could be from you!

NPW 2014 (Sept 1—5) —Article by Lisa Odom, CPS
Lisa Odom
Director NPW
How long have you been a member of APA? 5 years
What are some of the benefits you have received through APA member-
ship both National and Local? I love meeting new people that I have
something in common with and I have also learned a great deal of information concerning payroll
by attending as many seminars offered by the APA as much as I can
How long have you been working in the payroll industry, and how did you get started? I have been
in an office environment for 30 yearsz. I started out as a bookkeeper; then I decided to go back to
school. After that I became an accountant working at two different companies. In 1993 I was called
by a friend of mine to take the Controller’s position at the Nashville Speedway (he had a controlling
interest). I stayed there until my brother (Bobby Hamilton Sr.) a local NASCAR race car driver de-
cided to start his own race team. In 1996 I went to work for him as the Office Manager of Bobby
Hamilton Racing. I believe this was my favorite job of all time! I was able to meet so many lovely
people from all over the US while traveling with his team. After his death from cancer, I came to
work at my current position with Take Care Health Systems.
Tell me about the key people that have influenced you or made a strong impact on your career
success? My mother is the key person that has influenced me and made a strong impact on my ca-
reer. My father owned his own business and my mother kept the accounting books and also did
payroll for their company. When I was thirteen years old my mother would take me to their busi-
ness office and taught me the basics of an office environment and also demonstrated to me her good
work ethic.
How often do you process your payroll, and what system do you use? I am the Payroll Accountatn
with our company so I don’t necessarily process payroll. My work starts after payroll has been pro-
cessed, and I am responsible for the tax side and reporting.
What has been your greatest accomplishment? My greatest accomplishment was going back to
school. It has been since 1975 that I received my Associates Degree; and I really had a hard time
after being out of school so long. I was able to attend school and earn my Bachelors while still
working..
If you weren’t in payroll, what career could you see yourself working? Meteorology. I’ve always had
a fascination with all sorts of weather
What payroll trends do you see growing in the future? Outsourcing HR functions are becoming
very popular and many companies seem to think that it is the best fit for their organization.
