Leadership -The ability to take on every task with a sense of purpose and caring for those around them. Leading others to grab hold of a vision and inspiring them to reach it.

Matthew Holm’s birthday is on February 24th.

Matthew Holm is a graphic designer, mouse wrangler, and freelance writer. The brother-and-sister team of Matthew "InkBoy" Holm and Jennifer"WriterGirl" Holm are long-time comic fans, the duo behind the award-winning Babymouse series, and the newly created spinoff series, Squish.

Matthew actually draws each book three times. First, they collaborate onideas and then Jennifer writes the manuscript, he draws quick thumbnail pencil sketches and sends those drawings to Jennifer, who cuts and pastes

them into a rough layout. Matthew re-draws the layout pages on full size sheets of paper with Sharpie Markers. His final versions are inked on his computer using a special drawing tablet and then he adds color. Thus their collaborative magic is born!

He began drawing his own comic strips in sixth grade. During his senior year in High Schoolhe was in a mentor-mentee program with Tony Auth, the Pulitzer-winning political cartoonist!Matthew went on to draw weekly editorial cartoons for Penn State’s Daily Collegian and towrite for Country Living magazine.

Matthew’s favorite dessert is cheesecake (although, like Babymouse, he never turns down a cupcake). He lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife and dog.

Cheerfulness - Maintaining a good-humored, bright, and pleasant attitudetoward others and the world around them.

Tracey West’s birthday is on April 16th.

Tracey West becomes “Coco Simon” as one of the writers of The Cupcake Diaries. She really enjoys writing about the middle-grade girls because of her really vivid middle school memories. “The varied personalities of the teachers; the embarrassing moments in gym; trying to fit in; those are things you never forget. But what I remember most are the friendships I forged back then, many of which lasted into adulthood. Without those friends middle school would have been a nightmare, and so I try to convey that in the way that Katie, Mia, Alexis, and Emma support one another. Of course the other element in the series is cupcakes--beautiful, delicious cupcakes featuring all kinds of amazing flavors. By the time I'm done with a first draft you'll usually find some cupcake crumbs on my keyboard.”

Tracey attended Rutgers University and studied English and Journalism there. She has written Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys, Pokémon, and other book series, as well as her own Pixie Tricks series.

She likes reading about and investigating strange and mysterious things, walking her dogs, hiking in the woods and watching cartoons.

Tracey is married to Bill, has three dogs, one cat, and is a stepmom to Bill’s three great kids.

Courage -To face difficulty or danger and expressyour beliefs even if you’re afraid.

Candace Fleming’s birthday is on May 24th.

Candace has always been a storyteller. She could tell agood tale and told them all the time. They were such good stories people thought she was telling the truth. She simply enjoyed telling a good story... and seeing her listener's reaction. Her parents called them "imaginative” and encouraged her to put her stories down on paper. Once she began writing, she filled notebook after notebook with stories, poems, and plays.

She never really thought of becoming an author. Instead, she went to college and discovered a passion for history. “Some of the best stories are true ones — tales of heroism and villainy made more incredible by the fact they really happened.”

As a young child growing up in central Illinois, Candace and her friends would ride their bikes to Abraham Lincoln’s log cabin.Sometimes they would “play house” inside the old cabin. Almost every Friday night from fifth to eighth grade she slept in ahouse that had a bedroom Lincoln actually had slept in. It was her best friend Emily’s bedroom! Candace wanted people toremember Lincoln as “a man just like us; a human being just like us,” so she wrote the nonfiction book, The Lincolns.

Writing picture books is like “skipping.” Candace says she considers it “pure joy” and “the best job ever.” She uses her formula,CLAPS, in her stories. C=character, L=location, A=action, P=problem, and S=solve the problem with “the magic three.”

Candace lives in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.

Patience - The power to wait calmly with a happy spirit; avoiding extremes.

Erin E. Stead’s birthday is on December 27th.

Erin Stead is the Caldecott Medal winning illustrator of A Sick Day for Amos McGee, co-createdwith her husband, author and artist Philip Stead.

In her Caldecott Medal acceptance speech Erin revealed, “Before Philip introduced me to Amos McGee and his friends, I had completely lost the courage to make my own drawings.” … “At the end of the third year, I was unable to ignore the fact that without drawing, a part of me was missing.” She also said, “Drawing is an act that makes me feel vulnerable, but also one that completes me.”

Erin creates her illustrations using woodblock printing techniques and pencil. She believes e-books offer convenience but that there is an infinite beauty in the limitations of paper books that provide possibilities of ourown imagination. “Books are simple. They must be felt,” she notes.

Erin and Philip Stead live in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

As defined by Dr. Thomas Lickona, authorof Character Matters, character educationis the deliberate effort to develop virtuesthat are good for the individual and goodfor society. The objective goodness ofvirtues is based on the fact that they:

Affirm our human dignity

Promote the well-being and happiness of the indvidual

Serve the common good

Define our rights and obligations

Meet the classical ethical tests of:Reversibility Would you want to be treated this way?Universalizability Would you want all persons to act this way in a similar situation?

Good Character Has Two Big PartsPerformance Character –– all the virtues such as effort,

diligence, positive attitude, and perseverance thathelp us do our best work.

Moral Character –– all the virtues such as honesty, respect, fairness, and caring that help us be our bestin relationships.

We Will Have The Most Success In TeachingAny Given Virtue If We Use The 7 E’s.

Explain ItDefine it, describe it (what does it look like?),

and discuss its importance.Examine ItIn literature, history, and current events.Exhibit ItThrough your personal example.Expect ItThrough mutually understood rules and consequences.Experience ItIn everyday relationships and activities.Encourage ItThrough goal-setting and daily practice.Evaluate ItThrough feedback and student self-assessment.

First-grade teacher Jan Gorman shows how to use the7 E’s to unlock the character-building power of children’s literature. She teaches a virtue a week, beginning with caring. She gathers her students in a circle and elicits their thoughts about the following questions, making a visual web of their responses:

• What is caring?• Why is it important?• How can each of us show caring? In our classroom?

Our school? Our families?

She then reads a picture book that exemplifies thetheme of caring: Peter Golenbock’s Teammates. It tellsthe story of how Brooklyn Dodgers Captain Pee WeeReese stood by Jackie Robinson when Jackie facedracism, even from some of his teammates, for being thefirst black man to play major league baseball. After thestory, the teacher conducts a discussion, asking: “Whoin the story showed caring? Who did not show caring?”

Then she says, “I want you to remember this story andmake it your goal to show caring toward each otherduring the rest of the day.” When a child behaves incaring way, she publicly compliments that child. If achild behaves in an unkind way, she gently correctsthat student privately: “Did that behavior show caring?Remember our story. . . remember our discussion.”

On each subsequent day of the week, she reads a different children’s book about caring, followed by another class discussion. She repeats her challenge tochildren to act in a caring way and again looks foropportunities to compliment or correct their behavior.

“By the end of the week,” she says, “caring has been established as an expectation in my classroom.” During the following weeks, she repeats this processwith different virtues such as courtesy, courage, and perseverance.
