The state of the complex ux of dierent spatial inuences is reected in the structureof the pavement.

Our main architectural and political position regarding this particular spot is that the publicspace of the city has to be preserved and unied. The main tool for conductance of this policywas the geometrical grid that covers the entire area.

Primary direction of spatial ow of all the primary communications, along the boulevard on thenorth side of location is represented in the lines of the pavement material - with the spreadingof the paving tiles.

The secondary transversal direction between the old organic city structure and the neworthogonal one is very strong, but has no tangible references in the space to which we couldhave reacted. It creates the feeling that isnt articulate enough to be caught with lines and ispresent more like some kind of subconscious entity. This was captured with the color. Theelds that are closer to the old city block with its passages and alleys are darker, while thosethat are more in the open are lighter.

Belgrade has widely spread and deeply rooted do it your self building culture that is mostly a con-sequence of socialist urban planning, which did not allow any form of individual dwelling nor privatebuilding initiative.

The spontaneous building culture in Belgrade implies variety of habits and life styles associatedwith the use of specic parts of the city. The islands of river Sava are among such places. Thoseare green oasis in the heart of the city and favorite spaces for recreation. Ada Medjica is one ofthe most popular islands with many oating houses, where people of Belgrade spend theirweekends.

Most of the built structure on Medjica island is do it your self type of architecture. There is neitherfresh water nor regulated waste disposal on the island. Floating houses, distributed on inappropri-ately short distances oat on technically unreliable pontoons made out of used oil barrels. They areparasites on city power grid and they are polluting the river and the islands forest with all kinds ofwaste.

Their owners in many cases visit them rarely, and because of that, very attractive space re-mains occupied but unused. Also, there is no coordination amongst community members, and therefore it is impossible to regulate the pattern of space usage.****We suggest that existing oating houses are replaced with short lived ephemeral structures, that are mainly build out of recycled elements which are produces on the island. The usersassemble their own new oating houses on one of the potential positions out of the elements

that are provided by the community center / Mothership.

All elements, beside solar panels and inatable pontoons have very limited expiration date. Theplatform and wall panels are made out of mixture of recycled paper and organic glue, and are 5 or15 cm thick. After they are installed and exposed to moisture, they are useable for a period of ap-proximately 7 days.

Expiration date of proposed oating house, matches the average time its users spend on the islandduring a single visit (2 10 days).

All the things that are needed to assemble the oating house and to live there for a short period oftime, are prepared, produced and recycled in the Mothership. That is the only permanent buildingon the island and it consists out of following functional elements:

    1. space for gathering and classication of waste; 2. space for recycling and production of dierentkinds of paper elements; 3. space for preparation and issuing of capsules with batteries, fresh water(The Cell); 4. compost with extraction of biogas; 5. food storage; 6. kitchen; 7. restaurant; 8.administration; 9. dock

The energy for maintenance of the entire system is provided by 16 water turbines, solar panels andbiogas extracted from the biological waste.

The production of electrical energy is realized in 3 possible ways:

    1. harvesting the river stream power2. using the solar energy

    3. recycling biological waste

    1. By using the new generation of specialized river turbines positioned along the coast line, it

is possible to produce the main portion of the electric energy which is further used to supply allconsumers within this project.

Characteristics of such system are:- Turbine diameter / height D=1000mm / H=1500mm- Average river speed V=1m/s- Turbine power 29.3kW- Number of turbines 16> The expected turbine power is 468kW.

    2. By installing approximately 90 solar panels (550x400x25mm) on each housing unit roof and withaverage of 2000 sunny hours per year we can expect to generate 14kW of power for further electricalenergy production.

Characteristics:- number of panels per house / single roof area 20 / 25m2- total number of panels / single panel area 1800 / 0.22m2

    3. Biological waste can be converted to biogas and further distributed for housing units exploitation. The total amount of electrical energy, generated by approximately 485kW of power given by the river(96.5%), sun (3%) and the biological waste (0.5%), is used for supplying 20 housing units and theMothership.

    Primary power consumers:

    1. Mothership

heating; kitchen / restaurant; waste recycling (paper, biological waste, etc.); panel productionline; cranes; illumination

    2. Housing units

    heating; household appliances; illumination

The Cell battery lifetime is signicantly shorter during the winter period - it can last no more than24 hours. During the summer period, the battery can last up to ve days.

JimAuditorium - Boobamarasocial enterprise .... for Sava river quay , Begrade .... August 2010(team: Nataa Prica, Jelena Gruji, Petar Bojovi)

Site:Quay on the river bank in zone of New Belgrades River Sava Projects. (1965 1977).

The main community center functions in this part of the city were never built during the Socialist

government because of the permanent lack of funds.

Besides of that, in the present moment it suers from all the social problems of typical a modernisturban environment combined with those related to transition and poverty: the people are alienatedand busy, the youth is uninspired to socialize, to study or to work. Not too many people feel connectedwith the space in which they live.

The only functioning local activities are gyms and pubs.

    Concept:

Ephemeral traveling auditorium for lectures and small concerts powered by electricity generatedby people who workout on the gym bicycles that are connected to electric power generators while

    watching the performance.

The success of the performance depends of the motivation of the audience to pedal and theskill of the performer, because if they stop pedaling the light and sound systems will stopfunctioning because of the lack of power and the show will soon be over.

Team work of the audience and performers is essential.

    Project title: Slinky Rig

The main goal is to provide easily transformable rig that can be adapted to many dierentkinds of urban environments and activities.

The proposed design is a six-wheel platform that carries a set of seven rings, connectedwith steel armature (or bamboo brackets) and strong water-resistible tent or parachutecanvas.

By pooling the strings attached to the rings that stretch canvas, the users can decidein which way they want to occupy the space. They can lift the secondary platform up,if they want to create a stage or if they need some privacy, or they can put it next to themain platform to render more space in the same level.

Slinky rig is manpowered and there is a possibility (if nance allows it) of installment ofgenerator that would signicantly enhance its autonomy.

Disperse Dwellingstudio Prof Branislav Mitrovi .... 2007

The starting point of the analysis was the fact that the most wanted, best selling and most expensive

($/m) apartments on Belgrade real-estate market are those of 30m, or 50m divided in as many

    as possible small rooms.

This fact carries a lot of implications - since all of the social groups are buying or renting

    apartments.

If we skip the obvious case of the families that belong to vulnerable social groups that cant aord to

buy a bigger apartment (and that governments social programs dont help much either) maybe we

can conclude that certain number of at-purchasers dont need one. Maybe we can assume that

there are people living in the city who have such a lifestyle which could be supported with

    the living space of 30 - 40 m.

The phenomenon becomes even more clear when we think about the collapse of the notion of

archetypal Family in relation to the notion of the House in context of the modern city e.g.:

    * The majority of single working men and women do not eat at home

they dont need the large kitchen with dining room for eight people.

    * Many people make their social interactions in public spaces (cafs, restaurants, clubs)

they dont need a very large living room for to many guests

    * Students learn and practice in reading rooms or special places for that on their faculties

    - they dont need a big library and two large working desks

    * Many sports fans watch their favorite matches in the pub or betting houses

    - they dont need a large plasma TV and room for many chairs in front of it

Fast pace of life, mass communications, the media and consumerism have changed the habits and

expanded expectations of people when it comes to entertainment, nutrition, recreation so to some

extent it is absurd to expect them to satisfy their needs within the boundaries of an urban at.

Changing needs require revised denition of the comfortable apartment. Family, whose members

are not bound to the mutual living space by any of its primary daily activities, naturally has dierent

needs in comparison with the Families who gather around the table in the center of the House.

Therefore a small apartment can be the curse of the vulnerable groups or the result of the

lifestyle of people whose dwelling is dispersed throughout the urban matrix, along the paths

of their daily migrations. (In any case small ats in Belgrade sometimes do not provide even the

basic conditions for life making their tenants to take some of the activities outside weather or

not it is their free choice)

Substandard at without adequate functional context planned on the level of entire neighboring areasimply cant sustain humane life conditions.

My thesis is that all of this boils down to conclusion that the small living unit is in fact an

urban issue that requires a specic planning of the residential area.

Contradictory Nature of the Places That Are Not on the MapCase Study: Belgrade and Pantelleria

The island and the city of Pantelleria were unnecessarily bombed by the allies at the end of WW

II and turned to rubble. The citys population of 20.000 shrank to present number of 2000. Dueto inertia of the state government spatial planning administration and disappearance of many landowners the Island is still interspersed with many sixty years old ruins and empty lots.

Ruins of Pantelleria are not famous enough to be marked on the tourist map of the island, nor arethey visible or important enough to be cleared or rebuilt, even tough the residents of the island arewaiting for it to happen for more than sixty years. Paradoxical, temporary situation in life of buildingsthat lasts as much as it is necessary for them to be (re)built, accepted and deployed by governmentsystem takes in Pantelleria so long that it has become a new form of life. Ruins - the physical andpolitical state of them is what I imagine to be a general tone that gives color to all that is happeningin the city are not on the map.

State of the Pantelleria city reminds me very much of the state of many places in Belgrade (in manyways of the whole city). These are places which, although living for years with the city, somehow

manage to stay out of sight of the general public and the authorities. Something about them preventsthem from being recognized, acknowledged, named, or in any way put in the system amongst theother places that are on the map.

Properties of which I speak are mostly heterotopias described by Michel Foucault 1967. Incontrast to utopias that are the inversion of the existing society but do not exist as such, heterotopias are related to a number of really existing inversions. These are the placesthat are possessed with the contradictions that are opposed to some of the basic, a prioriprinciples that are underlying the space and layout of modern society: the relationshipbetween public and private, between work and leisure, cultural and utilitarian, family andsociety, reality and illusion, legal and illegal ...

Heterotopias - the points at which the invisible conicts that dene the space in which we

live are amplied - were the subject of my interest.Working on them, was an opportunity forme to review many of the unconsciously adopted (systemic) design patterns and to deal with spatialproblems that exist for me personally (Barth 1980).

I wanted to form my own description of the concept through a series of case studies and architecturaldesigns. By doing that, I wanted to compare the situation of selected Belgrade heterotopias andthose from Pantelleria in order to prove similarity.

    Temporary Screening Room and Theater

The selected site is privately owned parcel which contains the remains of an amphitheater fromthe thirties. Its activation involves an intervention that will not damage the archaeologicalsite; which will be limited by the time frame duration of archaeological, legal, urban andother necessary analysis needed to make the conditions so that on this plot could be builtany kind of permanent structure.

The proposed solution is a temporary structure: the projection room as a box of polycarbonatepanels, mounted on the dismantling steel structure that stands on the existing remains of theamphitheater. The extension that includes technical properties (wardrobe, room for chemical toilets, storage, tank for drinking water and bar) connects the screening room with the secondary objectthat comes out on the street and stands in the place of ruin of some residential building. Inside ofthe secondary object is store for selling books and lms on the ground oor and a multifunctional

hall for fty viewers on the rst oor.

Bicycle Tourism Center of Belgrade(in the garage for discarded police vehicles under Brankos bridge in Belgrade)

This area is involved in the process of decomposition that lasts for more than twenty years. Inaddition to the physical deterioration of the material of which it is made, in the past period of time, the essence of the relationship between its name, function and location has largely collapsed as well.Uncertainties related to the history and meaning of this facility, tell more about its nature than theknown facts, or its actual appearance.

My answer lies in the mobilization of the existing cycling culture of this area. The solution

depends on the networking of this area with existing and potential bicycle paths and routesin the city and beyond.

The proposed Center of bicycle tourism is a exible space that should function as a service foractivities related to the sport: bike rental, bicycle hostel in Belgrade for guests that ended a long roadstage, showers, massage, shop, caf, a special kitchen for cyclists food, tourist agencies, mechanic

    and tness.

The bridge is located at the tender required location, on the existing pillars of the former railwaybridge Franz Josef built in 1883, under the Petrovaradin Fortress.

Basic postulates of the solution are: 1) the bridge has to be visually dierent from the existing -grid has been chosen 2) that the bridge has smaller longitudinal slope - small depth of the structure

deck, 3) structure deck has to be inexpensive, resistant to fatigue and to atmospheric eects, cheapfor maintenance - composite deck structure, 4) main load bearing system has the minimum of therequired steel material.

According to the previous structural and architectural considerations, the system of composite steel-concrete trusses, chords with the wave motion through the space was chosen. Thats how the wholeproject was named The Danube wave.

The bridge is an extension of one of the main boulevards of Novi Sad. It connects the oldcity center with the Austro-Hungarian Petrovaradin fortress.

The main architectural considerations regarding the form of the structure were: 1) toemphasize the view of the fortress from the direction of the boulevard, 2) to try to makethe structure as discreet as possible when perceived from the bridge deck, 3) to introduce

it as a new landmark of the city.

The structure is consisted out of four consecutive parabolic arches that form awave line which goes above and below the bridge deck. In that way we managed tohide the arches that are closest to the river banks and the fortress. The composition isdynamic and uent when watched from the from the city quay and discreet when viewedfrom the old fortress.
