Australia, Apr 7 Australia's Great Barrier Reefhas suffered its most widespreadcoral bleaching on record. It is abig threat posed by climate changeto the world's largest livingorganism. James Cook Universityprofessor Terry Hughes said acomprehensive survey last monthfound record sea temperatures hadcaused the third mass bleaching ofthe 2,300-kilometre reef system injust five years. Bleaching occurs when healthycorals become stressed by changesin ocean temperatures, causing themto expel algae living in their tissueswhich drains them of their vibrantcolours. For the first time, severebleaching has struck all three regionsof the Great Barrier Reef -- the

northern, central and now large partsof the southern sectors. The damagecame as February brought thehighest monthly sea temperatures onthe Great Barrier Reef since Australiabegan keeping records in 1900. The reef is worth an estimated 4billion dollars a year in tourismrevenue for the Australian economy, but is at risk of losing its covetedworld heritage status becausewarmer oceans brought about by

climate change have damaged itshealth. Back-to-back bleachingevents in 2016 and 2017 promptedthe government agency overseeingthe reef to downgrade its long-termoutlook to 'very poor'. Bleaching wasfirst seen on the reef in 1998 -- atthe time, the hottest year on record -- but as temperature records continueto tumble its frequency hasincreased, giving coral less time torecover.
