suggested, facilitating the visual contact and theatrical sense of the visitors’ spaces of the museum.

EXHIBITION SPACE

The exhibition spaces are located on the rst oor. The volume appears externally as an imposing element. It is externally cladded with prefabricated concrete panels that translate the sculptural values and aesthetics of the Bauhaus movement. The division of the volume into distinct sub-volumes reects the intention of creating distinct thematics under the topoi themes. At the same time, internally the space functions as a unity that can be used in integrity and adapt to several scenarios and spatial needs.

NEW MUSEUM

The contemporary role of a museum is to engage its visitors and function as an urban condenser. The proposed museum is a node, a passage connecting the urban park with the pedestrian circulation of Ratgasse and Kavaliestrasse. In a city scale, the passage of the museum is a hub connecting the Townhall and the adjacent marketplace, with the Main Railway Station and also the Univer-sity and Bauhaus.

TOPOS SQUARE

The proposal features a public square in front of the museum, that we propose to name Topos Bauhaus, the square is conceived as a place of interest that is expected to be the heart of the park that will contribute to the public realm. The foyer of the museum and the cafeteria are in immediate relation to the square.

EVENT STAIRCASE

A feature staircase that connects the foyer to the group and workshop space leading to the museum exhibi-tion, dominates the ground oor of the visitors’ space. This staircase of 7m width functions as an event staircase that can host all types of public events. The ground level of the museum is designed as an open and accessible platform, therefore the use of transparent and translucent materials (glass and U-glass) is

INTERVENTIONAPPROACH

BRIEF

The design proposal is part of Athens’s Archaeological Sites Integration Programme, which when complete will connect through pedestrian routes all major ancient sites scattered around the city’s central areas .The brief includes the transformation of Vassilisis Olgas avenue, in order to act as the connection between the touristic area of Plaka with Acropolis hill, the New Museum of Acropolis, and the Panathinaiko Stadium(Kallimarmaro).

TODAY

Currently Vasilissis Olgas Avenue is primarily used as an informal and illegal parking spot for tourist coaches, and is crossed by the tram route leading to Syntagma Square. Our main goal was to introduce new qualities of public space, creating natural rooms, inserting new social uses along the route. Our area of intervention includes an array of sports facilities, archaeological ruins and plenty of contemporary urban programs. Despite being a diverse site presenting chances for a variety of social activities, the area remains deserted especially when there are no scheduled events. The facilities are fenced-off, under used and degrading.

INTERVENTION

The basic intervention approach can be summarized in 3 basic steps, RECORD-EVALUATE-TRANSFORM. Firstly, we created an extensive archive of the existing situation with on-site visits, recording points of interest, existing vegetation, terrain characteris-tics, infrastructure, transportation needs and general urban service networks. The information gathered was then used to form layered maps, providing the background for planning the intervention. The second stage, included the evaluation of the characteristics of each area of the park, examining the natural ora, possibilities of giving certain uses back to the public, and making pedestrian circulation in the park easier thus raising accessibility and area inux. We also examined the current way of use, of all the sports facilities and urban infrastructure,

realizing that besides physical obstacles and barriers the intangible limits posed by the semi-public character of these uses, lead to spatial division and segregation between the users.

Finally, we carefully began transform-ing individual areas of the park, removing chain-link fences, replacing them with thicker vegetation and terrain transformation, grouping and minimizing the existing facilities, highlighting the ancient river banks of Ilissos River, adding wooden struc-tures and transforming the former in-between spaces to vital circulation space as well as sitting and playing areas.
