This celebration of Chinese culture at Mount Baker Theater highlights Chinese traditional music at precisely the time Chinese are celebrating the Lunar New Year. Today’s performance is an invitation to the community to enjoy a diverse array of music, from instrumental to operatic, from folk to ceremonial. The various genres to be performed include symphony, opera and modern song. We are delighted to have the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra perform a Chinese symphony and an erhu concerto. They will also perform with the Seattle Peking Opera Troupe, who today will be joined by musicians from Los Angeles. The Seattle Chinese Orchestra will perform with traditional instruments.

Today’s concert provides a rare opportunity for the community to learn about Chinese culture through staged performances. As our relations with China expand, it is important for us to gain increased understanding of Chinese culture. At this time, China is the largest trading partner of the United States and also with our Washington State. China will also capture world attention as our athletes participate in the 2008 summer Olympics.

We proudly present this event to highlight the beauty of several Chinese traditional instruments. As you will experience during this program, Eastern and Western music differ in significant ways. Generally, Western music develops through vertical harmonic extensions by using many different instruments. However, in Chinese music, the narrative is developed by horizontal elongation, in other words through melody. From one perspective, listening to Western music is like a colorful and dynamic experience while Chinese music leads one to retreat into a deep and quiet forest. Nonetheless, music is a universal language. We hope that the essential elements of music touch our souls.

We thank our sponsors and you, the audience, for making this event possible. The concert is jointly organized by Meihua Chinese School, Pacific Northwest Cultural Exchange Council and Western Washington University. We hope that you will enjoy the performance.

2008 Is the Year of the Rat

Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. Each year is associated with an animal. The Chinese Zodiac cycles every twelve years, thus it will be the year of the Rat again in 2020. Starting with the characters in the figure above and traversing clockwise are the words for rat, cow, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. People born in the Year of the Rat are one of the most industrious and hardest working in the zodiac.

Whatcom Symphony Orchestra ConductorWhatcom Symphony Orchestra ConductorWhatcom Symphony Orchestra ConductorWhatcom Symphony Orchestra Conductor

Roger Briggs is currently the Artistic Director of the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra in Bellingham, Washington and has held that position since 1996. He has conducted and recorded with the London Symphony, the Czech Radio Symphony and the Prague Symphony. In addition to standard orchestral repertoire, Mr. Briggs is equally at home

with contemporary scores-both orchestral and chamber. He founded the Michiana New Music Ensemble in South Bend, IN, the Contemporary Chamber Players at Western Washington University and the Whatcom Symphony Chamber Orchestra in Bellingham, WA. He has also guest conducted other established contemporary ensembles like The New Performance Group/Sonora, Zephyr, and Fear No Music.

Western Washington University derives significant benefit from cultural events in the community. The inaugural Chinese Culture Festival Concert in 2006 proved to be a splendid success; the university was pleased to have collaborated in that effort. This year, we applaud the planning committee for bringing another impressive performance to Bellingham. We hope that the concert will become a biennial event, enhancing opportunities for the university and the community to enjoy the musical traditions of China. Congratulations to the event organizers, talented artists, and generous sponsors who have made this performance possible. We are pleased that Western Washington University has been able to assist in hosting musicians from China. We have an ever greater interest in Chinese culture and appreciate the richness these performers bring to our campus and community. As the Year of the Rat begins, we extend our sincere wishes for a New Year of prosperity and happiness.

Sincerely,

Events that bring an international cast to Bellingham greatly enhance our academic programs. We are pleased to collaborate with the sponsors and promoters of the performance.

The recent establishment of the Center for International Studies is confirmation of Western Washington University’s commitment to the intensification of international experiences and opportunities for students. Our Chinese language program continues to expand as it begins the third decade of Chinese instruction at the university. Students actively participate in study abroad programs in China and Taiwan. In addition to language skills, students gain historical and cultural knowledge through academic offerings of the Center for East Asian Studies. The Center is pleased to sponsor Professor Li Xiaolin of Zhejiang University and to arrange her lectures and demonstrations for our students and faculty.

Chinese Instruments Notes

Erhu, Jinghu, Jing-erhu —The erhu is one of the most widely used instruments belonging to the “huqin” family. Its ancestor is believed to be the xiqin, a “barbarian” instrument from Mongolia. The erhu, along with the jinghu, jing-erhu, gaohu, and banhu, has two strings and is played with the bow inserted between them. The two strings are usually tuned a fifth apart. The erhu is known as the “Chinese fiddle” to Westerners. Though it has some of the qualities of the violin, its tone is more nasal. In the modern set-up, erhus are divided into the 1st and 2nd parts. The jinghu has a much higher pitch than the erhu and is one of the principle accompanying instruments to Chinese Opera.

Gaohu, Banhu—The gaohu has a smaller resonator than the erhu and is tuned a fourth or

fifth higher. The gaohu is also known as the Cantonese hu. The banhu is another type of “huqin”. It is so called because one surface of its sound-box is made of wooden plank (ban). It is also called banghu (clapper huqin) because it started in the 17th century with the appearance of the bangzi or clapper operas. It has a bright tone quality and is used as a solo instrument as well as a group instrument.

Pipa—The pipa is the leading instrument in the plucked string group. It is a pear-shaped, lute-like instrument with four strings with a range three and a half octaves. The pipa makes a good solo or ensemble instrument. Its ancestor could well be the Persian barbat, but because the Chinese have used it for so many years and have developed so many different techniques for playing it, the pipa is considered to be characteristic of Chinese music.

Ruan, yueqin—The ruan is played using a plectrum and sound somewhat like a classical guitar. It comes in a consort of different sizes all fitted with four strings. The zhong ruan (alto ruan) and da ruan (tenor ruan) are most commonly used. The yueqin was developed from the ruan and is named for its moon shaped sound box (yue means moon in Chinese). It has a shorter neck than the ruan and is one of the more important accompanying instruments to Peking Opera.

Di (or Dizi)—The di is a transverse bamboo flute. Traditionally, only three keys can be played with precise intonation. Most players equip themselves with a consort of di in different sizes and keys. The di has a membrane over an extra tone hole to give the rattle effect of the Chinese flute. Occasionally compositions do call for a di without the membrane. It is a very popular instrument in China and is used for both solos and in ensembles.

Yangqing—The yangqing is a dulcimer played with bamboo mallets. It is adapted from the Persian santur or possibly from an Arabian type. It comes in different sizes. The concert model has a range of four octaves. Its tone is metallic and quite close to that of the harpsichord.

Guzheng—The guzheng or zheng is sometimes known as the Chinese zither, and in Japan, it is called the koto. It varies from thirteen to seventeen strings tuned to the pentatonic scale with a range exceeding three octaves.

Percussion—Chinese musical ensembles are rich in percussion. Membranophones come in

varied sizes, emitting very high to quite low pitches. Ideophones include cymbals, gongs, bells, handbells, yunluo (gongs with tuned pitches), jingluo (small gong used in Peking Opera), qings (bronze bowls with bell-like tone), wooden clappers, claves and temple blocks. Modern ensembles have also adopted the concert timpani.
