Great Skin is a Family Affair!

OUR entire team, especially our experienced dermatologists, are committed to providing “medically sound” dermatology, which means we’re committed to skin health and well-being from the moment you and every member of your family is born, well into your mature years.

If your toddler is itching incessantly, your teenager is trying to tackle acne, or your husband has a mole that looks suspicious, Midwest Dermatology can help with a quick and accurate diagnosis. Our team can then turn to an array of effective treatment options that range from prescription eczema and acne skin care regimens to biologic treatment for psoriasis and Metrogel for rosacea, to advanced Mohs skin cancer surgery, and more.

Besides ensuring your skin’s health, Midwest Dermatology can keep your skin and exterior body looking rejuvenated at every age. Procedures such as laser skin resurfacing, gentle skin peels, tattoo removal and CoolSculpting are easy to schedule, no fuss-no muss to undergo, and offered in convenient office locations close to where you live and work.

Bottom line, as your family and their skin needs change and grow over the years, isn’t it reassuring to know that you’ve got a family dermatology practice ready to care for all of you?

When it comes to taking care of your skin and your family’s skin, Midwest Dermatology encourages you to make it a true family affair.

CALL (402) 552-2555 FOR AN APPOINTMENT AT ANY OMAHA METRO LOCATION

Oh, Baby!Midwest Dermatology isn’t just for

adults – we take care of newborns’ and infants’ skin concerns, too. If the little one you love has a rash, eczema, a birthmark or another issue affecting their brand new

skin, know that you can count on our skin specialists for medically sound diagnosis and treatment.

ONE CALL DOES IT ALL!

Beautiful, healthy skin is now easier than ever because Midwest Dermatology now

has one convenient phone number. All of our five Omaha metro area

offices are now using 402-552-2555.

Enter this number in your phone contacts and you’ll be able to reach us

Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., to schedule an appointment, talk to

our nurses, check an insurance claim or connect with any of our friendly staff.(Norfolk patients should continue to reach

us at the Norfolk office phone number.)

FIRST, it’s important to understand exactly what you’re dealing with. The experts at Midwest Dermatology recognize that eczema is an umbrella name for a group of conditions. Two of these conditions commonly affect children.

SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS, or “cradle cap,” is a condition that often occurs on babies’ tiny scalps, when their skin glands overproduce oil. Its exact cause is unknown but dermatologists believe it stems from a combination of genetics, natural yeast found on skin, and possibly hormones from the baby’s mom. Babies typically aren’t bothered by the condition, which is characterized by a yellowish crust, pinkness or redness, white or yellow flaking skin, and swelling.

ATOPIC DERMATITIS is a chronic, inflammatory condition that arises through a combination of genetic factors and environmental factors that children come into contact with or experience. A child’s immune system recognizes these factors and then “turns on,” and skin cells react. Symptoms of atopic dermatitis vary by age and include:

w In Infants (under six months), it shows as redness on the face, especially the cheeks and chin.

w In Babies (six to 12 months), it shows as a red rash on elbows and knees, skin that babies often scratch when they’re crawling.

w In Toddlers (two to five years), it shows as red patches with small bumps on the face, especially around the mouth and eyelids, and in skin creases near the elbows and knees. Skin may appear dry and somewhat scaly.

w In Children (five years and older), it shows as extremely dry skin, with red, itchy patches on hands elbows, knees, feet, behind the ears or on the scalp.

Treatment & PreventionChildhood skin is new and tender, which is why it deserves TLC. Midwest Dermatology can help resolve the symptoms of eczema and atopic dermatitis in two ways – with treatments that help resolve the symptoms seen during flare-ups and with recommendations that help prevent future flare-ups.

Some of the treatments Midwest Dermatology may prescribe to take away the itchiness and redness include:

w Topical prescription creams, for mild and moderate eczema, that are applied on the skin’s surface.

w Oral prescription pills, for moderate and severe eczema, that are taken by mouth.

Midwest Dermatology also recommends that parents put a skin care regimen in place so kids can avoid, as much as possible, extreme heat and dryness, which are eczema’s most common triggers. Specifically, our doctors recommend:

w Keeping bath and shower water lukewarm instead of hot.

w Adding humidity into inside air with a humidifier.

w Locking moisture into skin by applying a non-allergenic moisturizer within 10 minutes after a bath or shower.

w Keeping skin well covered when outside during the cold winter months.

Children may outgrow eczema, or they may not. However, there’s no need for them to suffer from this frustrating and uncomfortable condition. Call Midwest Dermatology today and we’ll help you take care of your little one.

Get Smart ABOUT

Wisdom Spots“WISDOM SPOTS” aren’t an official skin diagnosis, but sometimes doctors, including ours, use that term during the course of a skin check exam. At Midwest Dermatology, we may use the term to describe those small skin spots that show up on the skin as we become, well, older and wiser!

In medical terms, wisdom spots often turn out to be seborrheic keratosis – benign but unattractive scaly growths that often become irritated, bleed, and may even be a little painful. Fortunately, they can be treated. Your Midwest Dermatology skin specialist may recommend keeping an eye on them, or removing them through a freezing or shaving technique.

Wisdom spots may also be lentigos. Lentigos are small, pigmented spots on the skin with clearly defined edges. They’re flat, not raised like seborrheic kerotosis, and may be called “sun spots” because they frequently appear on skin that gets heavy sun exposure, like the face, arms and chest.

But, no matter your age or IQ, telling the difference between wisdom spots, sun spots and suspicious pre-cancerous moles and spots on the skin can be challenging. Midwest Dermatology encourages you to make an appointment with one of our skilled dermatologists. He or she can

perform a full-body skin exam and take a look at your “wisdom

spots” to see if any further treatment is needed.

Call 402-552-2555 today to make an appointment at one of our six convenient

locations.

Dry Skin doesn’t kid around – AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU

The itchy, red, and sometimes painful rashes associated with atopic dermatitis and eczema are no joking matter when they’re making your

child miserable. Fortunately, Midwest Dermatology can treat these conditions, which affect a full 13 percent of all children under the age of 18.

Erase Frown Lines From Your Feed

IF you’re not a fan of frown lines (and, really, who is?), Midwest Dermatology has a host of easy options to ensure your face looks smooth whether you’re showing it off at a family get-together or on Facebook!

Consult with our team today to see whether one of these injectable solutions can help you achieve the smooth and wrinkle-free look you desire:

BOTOX Cosmetic targets the underlying muscle activity that causes the furrows and deep crease-type wrinkles on the forehead, typically between the eyes, and crow’s feet wrinkles at the outside corners of the eyes. Just one treatment session reduces the problem muscle activity and results in smoothing of pronounced facial wrinkles and lines for up to six months.

Juvaderm gently restores skin’s youthful appearance by filling in “parentheses” wrinkles that surround the nose and mouth. It works by replacing the hyaluronic acid naturally found in younger skin and can help keep wrinkles away for 12 to 24 months.

Restylane smooths deeper wrinkles and restores volume in skin that has started to age. The solution is completely non-allergenic and non-animal based. Like Juvaderm, Restylane contains hyaluronic acid that keeps skin looking and feeling firm. Typically, patients can go up to nine months between treatments.

To make sure that acne doesn’t ruin those opportunities to make memories, talk to Midwest Dermatology. Our board-certified dermatologists can reverse an acne trend with an arsenal of effective treatments, including:

TOPICAL ACNE TREATMENTS that are applied on the skin’s surface:

❚ Benzoyl peroxide creams and gels that dry up the excess of oil produced by skin and also fight pimple-causing bacteria.

❚ Retin-A cream or gel, which works to loosen the oil and dead skin cells that get caught in facial hair follicles and cause blackheads to appear, typically, on the nose, chin or forehead.

❚ Antibiotic creams that work to dry skin and fight acne-causing bacteria

❚ Differin cream helps clear up acne blemishes and prevent breakouts by delivering a dose of Vitamin A, which is a proven nutrient for healthy, clear skin, to the skin’s surface.

ORAL ACNE TREATMENTS that are taken in pill form, by mouth:

❚ Antibiotic pills work throughout the body system to decrease the bacteria at the root of acne.

❚ Isotretinoin, which goes by the trade name of Accutane, is only used to combat the most severe cases of acne. Used over a six-month or longer course of treatment, Accutane has been shown to completely clear cystic acne.

SPECIALIZED ACNE TREATMENTS:

❚ Gentle extraction of whiteheads and blackheads to open up pores

❚ Steroid injections, which help reduce the pain, inflammation and redness of cystic acne.

With a surge of interest in all things digital and visual today, it’s likely your memory-making photos will be around for years – maybe until the 22nd century! So, make sure your images, and your image, looks terrific, now and later, by making an appointment with Midwest Dermatology today.
