Things You Need To Know

• You must register for any and all courses, lectures and/or Book Clubs that you want to attend.

• We encourage you to register for ADJLC offerings online at: www.adjlc.org

• If you wish to pay by credit card, you MUST register online.

• Courses given by Clergy of Collaboration Synagogues (listed on page two) are FREE. However, you must still register for these classes to assure that you receive cancellation and other notices.

• The ADJLC in determination with the Instructor reserves the right to cancel a courses or lecture if there is insufficient enrollment.

• Please note that course dates are subject to change at the discretion of the Instructor. Please call the specific synagogue location if you need to confirm cancellation.

Participants will learn phrases, expressions, words and day-to-day Hebrew conversation in order to build solid language skills. Classes will include video news clips and Hebrew news. We will base the class on the knowledge and ability level of the participants. A solid basic knowledge of Hebrew is helpful.

The word, “Zionism” is one of the most misunderstood words in contemporary jargon. This course will explore the various meanings of “Zionism” as it has developed, especially over the past 150 years. We will examine the origins and multi-dimensional philosophies of Zionism and in the process, achieve a greater understanding of the modern State of Israel and of our own Jewish identity.

A language study group for Ladino, which is based on medieval Castilian Spanish with words and phrases from lands of Sephardic history – Hebrew, Arabic, Turkish, French, Greek and Italian. This is a fun, classroom-setting activity using a variety of instructional and cultural resources to gain or improve one’s skills at reading, writing and speaking the Ladino language.Knowledge of Spanish helpful. The land we call Israel has had many names. For example Canaan, Judah, Samaria and many more. It also has had many conquerors and governments, each of which has left its mark. Our three-year series of the 5 Megillot and Jonah concludes this year with the study of Ruth and Lamentations (Eichah). The course will provide us an overview of these two books with special attention to the authorship, time of writing and the major themes.  We will look into why these books are associated with Shavuot and the Ninth of Av.

February 14, 2018 MAKING SACRED DECISIONS Rabbi Richard AddressModern medicine has extended life so much we are faced with new situations. Rabbi Address, Director of Jewish Sacred Aging, will discuss how Jewish texts can show us a way to deal with some of these changes. Colonel Biegel has over 50 years of combined military and intelligence service. After retirement from US Government service, he continues to lecture on relevant political-military issues dealing with the crisis-prone Middle East.

Dr. Bard co-chairs the task force on BDS & Delegitimization for the global Form on Combatting Anti-Semitism created by the Israeli Foreigh Ministry is a member of a similar task force established by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. •December 10, 2017HOLOCAUST LESSONS IN GERMANY: FACING THE PAST WITH EYES ON THE FUTURE Rabbi Stephen Fuchs For the past three years, Rabbi Fuchs and his wife have spent ten weeks in Germany where together they taught about the Shoah in German high schools. In addition he conducted High Holy Day services, taught in synagogues and at the Abraham Geiger College in Berlin. He has preached and taught in more than two dozen German churches, in most of which a Rabbi had never spoken before. He will speak about his experiences in Germany especially his visits to Leipzig where his late father grew up and was arrested on Kristallnacht.Rabbi Fuchs is the former president of World Union for Progressive Judaism and Rabbi Emeritus of congregation Beth Israel in West Hartford, Connecticut. He currently serves as Rabbi of Temple Bat Yam on Sanibel Island, Florida.Location: Temple Shaarei Shalom

Our Teaching Clergy

Rabbi Aviva BassRabbi Bass, Temple Sinai of Palm Beach County, has an M.A. in Jewish Education from Gratz College and a Rabbinic Ordination and Hebrew Letters degree from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 2000. Rabbi Bass is also a classically-trained soprano with B.A. in Music. She has served congregations as a Rabbi, Cantorial soloist, and educator, in the United States as well as in Australia and New Zealand.

Rabbi Anthony FratelloRabbi Anthony Fratello, Temple Shaarei Shalom, graduated from Pomona College in 1994, with a BA in History, and then began his studies toward the Rabbinate at the Jerusalem Campus of the Hebrew Union College. He continued his studies at the Cincinnati campus of HUC-JIR in 1995. Rabbi Fratello earned his MA in Hebrew Letters from the Hebrew Union College in 1998, and was ordained as a Rabbi in June 1999. Rabbi Fratello has served as a member of the Board of the Mandel Jewish Community Center of the Palm Beaches and the Friedman Commission for Jewish Education.

Cantor Michael Glozman Cantor Glozman, Temple Beth Kodesh, is a Russian-born Israeli musician. He graduated as choir conductor from the Moscow Academy of Chorale Art and as Cantor from The Tel Aviv Cantorial Institute. He is also a composer and music arranger (Theater Zero). He has achieved success as an actor, singer, and music director, having collaborated with The New Israeli Opera, the Gesher Theatre and Beit-Zvi School for the Performing Arts.

Cantor Irving Grossman Cantor Irving Grossman, Temple Beth Tikvah, is a graduate of the Cantors Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, where he earned the degree of Hazzan. He has studied extensively with the world famous Cantor David Kusevitsky. He is working with congregants to develop a junior choir as well as an adult choir to enhance the beauty & solemnity of our religious services.  As an active member of the Cantor’s Assembly, Cantor Grossman frequently participates in Cantorial concerts.

Cantor Judith OvadiaCantor Judith Ovadia, Temple Shaarei Shalom, hails from Lower Merion, PA, just outside Philadelphia. She began singing and playing guitar at the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (now URJ) Camp Harlam. Cantor Ovadia earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, where she was a soloist with the college chorus, under the direction of Harold Aks. She attended the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion School of Sacred Music, where she received her Master of Sacred Music degree.

Rabbi Howard ShubRabbi Shub, Temple Beth Tikvah, was born in Toronto, Canada. He earned his BA in Jewish History at Yeshiva University, NY, earned his MA in Contemporary Jewry at Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel, and was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary, NY, where he also earned an MA in Jewish Education. He is currently working on his PhD in Jewish History and Jewish Literature at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

Rabbi David SiffRabbi David Siff, PhD, is the rabbi of Temple Torat Emet. He received his B.A. from Dartmouth College, and his Ph.D. from JTS, Prior to his current position, he served as a psychiatric chaplain, and taught at Rutgers University as well as the Frankel Academy. Rabbi Siff is a member of the Rabbinical Assembly and also serves on the Board of OHALAH: Agudat Harabbanim l’Hithadshut Hayahadut, or Association of Rabbis and Cantors for Jewish Renewal.

Rabbi Michael SimonRabbi Simon, Temple Beth Kodesh, is a graduate of the Yeshivah of Flatbush and obtained rabbinic ordination from the Mesifta Adas Wolkowisk. He received a BA in Political Science from Pace University, a JD from Fordham University, and an MA in Jewish Studies from Gratz College. Rabbi Simon practiced law for 20 years before becoming the Rabbi at Temple Beth Kodesh. Rabbi Simon also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Rabbinics at Gratz College, an Adjunct Instructor of Jewish History at FAU, and has previously served as a faculty member of the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School.
