Acharya’s Desk

Class IV is an assortment of children of all genres. The children adjusted well to their new grades and to their new class with different friends.

This was the first time that I was handling 4th graders and I was not sure about their responses. But the enthusiastic bundle of 30 (in Anandabhairavi) was prompt in accepting their new class teacher with their charismatic warmth and innocence. Just like me, the other new children were also welcomed into 4th grade family with affection.

We all had a lot of fun together during the Ramzan potluck. The children were keen in bringing the various dishes from home according to the preset menu. They were equally excited to serve the dishes for their friends. We teachers also had our lunch with the children. After having a wonderful meal in their own respective classes with the class teachers, the children then got busy distributing the sweets and ‘payasam’ to the other classes.

The dandia that we had for Navratri celebration in school was enjoyed not only by the students, but by the teachers and the class volunteers. The auditorium looked really colourful when the children had come dressed in their traditional wears. The girls had beautifully adorned themselves in ‘paavadai chattai’ and ghagra cholis while the young gentlemen looked graceful in their kurta pyjamas. Dancing together to the dandia beats was an unforgettable experience for all.

The children always did a fantastic job for the Friday assemblies. They came up with lots of entertaining dramas, songs, magic shows, jokes etc. The efforts they took to practise for their class assemblies are really praiseworthy.

TRIP TO MYSORE AND COORG

During my first term holidays last year, we went on a vacation to Coorg and Mysore. I went on a train and had lots of fun, as it was the first time I was going on a train in India. I boarded the train on Friday night and reached Mysore the next day morning, we refreshed and started to Chamundi Hills.

I saw the temple of “Goddess Chamundeswari”, then we went to a showroom called” Cauvery” - where they sell unique handicrafts of Mysore.

In the evening I went to the “Brindavan Gardens”, first I went on a boat ride, and then I walked across the bridge and saw the Musical light Fountain.

The next day I went to the “Mysore Palace”. I saw the beautiful palace and its intricate work and paintings. We hired a Guide named Mr. Hussain and he explained us the various details about the palace and the kings who lived there. The palace was built in” Indo sarcenic style”. The domes resemble the Islamic architecture.

Dasara is the most extravagant festival of Mysore. The Dasara festival is celebrated in the months of September and October of each year. On the tenth day of the festival Vijaya Dasami, a parade with caparisoned elephants and other floats originate from the palace grounds. The palace has a huge Golden throne weighing 350 kgs made of Gold and Goddess chamundeswari is taken procession on the throne on top of the elephant.

From Mysore we went to Coorg and had plenty of fun, we saw an elephant training camp called “Dubbare”, where we gave elephant a bath and then saw the trainers fed elephants with ragi balls.

It was fun to see elephants taking food in huge quantities.

We then saw plantation of coffee and pepper and understood the process of Making coffee.

From the plantations we went to Tibetan monastery called the “Golden temple” and on the way we saw a river called Cauvery in Nisargadhama. There is a park where animals like deer, rabbits, and monkeys were kept. The next day I made pottery and still have the vase with me.

My Trip to Coorg was explorable as I saw and learnt many new things and had great fun.

Book Review

The Secret of Cacklefur Castle

by Geronimo Stilton

This book is written by Geronimo Stilton. He loves to write adventure stories. He has named the main character of the books Geronimo. Geronimo is a mouse. He is a fraidy mouse. He has written many stories. One of my favorite is “The secret of the Cackle fur Castle”.

In that book Geronimo goes to his old friend Creepella’s spooky castle. He meets her creepy familyThey have bats as their pets and love cats. Everyone there thinks Geronimo was strange. . He sees mummies, graveyards, ghosts and much more spooky things. He tought he would never escape the gloomiest and eeriest castle ever.

One day the library in the castle caught fire. Geronimo put out the fire and saved the library. The Cackle fur family was happy and thankful to Geronimo. They joined him in their Cackle fur family. He thanked them for their kindness and went back to his coziest mouse hole!

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part:2

As a whole family being fans of Harry Potter, it was a great sense of excitement as we drove down to see this movie at the AGS cinemas in the new theatres on the OMR stretch. It was also mixed with a sad feeling, as this movie was the last in the Harry Potter series. We have watched every single movie in the series and my sister the craziest of all was determined to finish reading the actual book before seeing the movie, which she managed to in the drive to the cinemas!!

The crux of the movie is how good beats evil at the end. Harry with his friends, Ron and Hermoine finally defeats and destroys Voldermort, the evil lord and the death eaters. The trio makes the movie very exciting and interesting with their presence as usual combined with the master wizardry from all ends mixed with humor at times.

There are some emotional parts when we come to know that Professor Snape was in the goodies team all along protecting Harry and how he unfortunately dies being killed by the evil lord. Certain scenes of the movie are very awesome when the bad team attack the Hogwarts school and a magic screen protects the school from the attacks ( but only for a while). It is sad to see some of Harry’s friends lose their life in the war against evil.

It was also nice and a bit funny when Harry is shown in the end as a father, when he comes to send HIS SON to Hogwarts with the families of grown up and married Ron and Hermoine.

However all is well that ends well and it was indeed a visual and emotional treat to all the Harry potter fans and yet another victory to JK Rowling and the actors and artists in the movie. A movie that well worth recommending to all friends to watch.

Movie Review “THE SOUND OF MUSIC”

Recently I watched the movie “The Sound of Music”. This movie was taken in 1965 starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. It is one of the most popular musical hit that won 5 Academy Awards including the Best Picture Award. The storyline is very simple and touching. Plummer as a Navy Captain is a widower (a person who has lost his wife) with seven children who seeks a Governess from the abbey to take care of them. Julie Andrews comes in as the Governess, who finds the Captain very stern with his children. She moulds the children and teaches them music. The famous song “Doe a deer a female deer, re a drop of golden sun” is the first song taught to the children and from then on the children enjoy music and keep singing through out. Captain regains his singing glory by singing “Edelweiss”, Julie Andrews sings out My favorite things, Climb Every Mountain, Sixteen going on seventeen, So Long Farewell and The Lonely Goatherd. There is a very cute puppet show for The Lonely Goatherd.

The story goes on and becomes slightly thrilling in the end. The beauty of Austria and Switzerland has been captured beautifully. It’s a must see for children like us!! !

Have fun watching the movie!! ! ! !

Onam is one of kerelas most famous festival. It is celebrated on the 1st month of

the Malayalam calendar called chingam. Onam is celebrated by putting a

pookalam (flower arrangement), feast is arranged and boat race. The story

about onam is …….

There was a king called mahabali he ruled over Kerala . He was actually a

made sure he gave it.He was so popular that the gods where jealous and

decided to teach him a lesson .So Vishnu took birth as a dwarf Brahmin called

Vamana and went the court of mahabali. Vamana was welcomed by

mahabali (he does that to everyone) and mahabali asked Vamana what he

wanted, Vamana said “dear king would you be humble enough to give me

three pieces of land?” mahabali replied “ yes of course “ so Vamana increased

his size and took 3 big steps his 1st step covered the sky , his 2nd step

covered the earth (except mahabali and himself ) “ what about my 3rd step

?“ asked Vamana. Mahabali under stood that Vamana was god and said “ lord

take my head for your 3rd step , but before I go underneath please let me visit

my city once a year “said mahabali Vamana said ok and that’s why onam is

celebrated !!!

Interesting Lesson in Class

One day when i was in English class listening to the story of Mowgli in the cave of wolves, I remembered the story of the four friends in karadi Tales. I found the same words like tumbling, squealing and rolling in the story that acharya was reading out to us. This was one of my best English classes during the term.
