Founded 1849

Welcome to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church We are glad you are here and hope you will return! Please make yourself at home and if you

need anything, just ask and someone will be glad to assist you. Don’t be surprised if folks

around you introduce themselves to you! Please introduce yourself to those around you and the

clergy after the service.

Restrooms for the Church are located in the Fellowship Center.

All baptized persons of any age are welcome to receive communion at our services. If you or

a family member are not baptized and would like to know more about joining the Church and

making a commitment to the Christian way of life, speak to the clergy or call the Church office.

Holy Baptism is the initiation by which we become members of Christ’s body, the Church, and

are invited to grow in love for God and service to others, supported by a spiritual family.

St. Mark’s was founded and the historic Church was built in 1849. The students and

faculty of nearby St. James School built the church as a missionary effort and it was used as a

hospital following the battles of Antietam and Gettysburg. The balcony in the historic church

was restored in 2014 as a place of prayer and pilgrimage to honor the lives of our nineteenth

century African American members, both slave and free. The Fellowship Center was

completed in 2011 and hosts worship and gatherings for the community. St. Mark’s is part of

the Diocese of Maryland, a member of the Episcopal Church and the world-wide Anglican

Communion—those Churches born out of the Church of England. Of the world’s 2.2 billion

Christians, we are the third largest body.

We provide Gluten – Free Wafers & wine – Please inform the Priest of your

preference when you come to the Altar Rail.

People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

O God, who on the holy mount revealed to chosen witnesses

your well-beloved Son, wonderfully transfigured, in raiment white and glistening:

Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may

by faith behold the King in his beauty; who with you, O Father, and you, O Holy

Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The people may be seated.

The First Lesson: Exodus 34:29-35

A Reading from the book of Exodus

Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the

two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face

shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw

Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But

Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to

him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he

gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.

When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but

whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil

off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had

face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in

to speak with him.

The Epistle: II Peter 1:13-21 A Reading from the Second letter of Peter

I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to refresh your memory, since I know

that my death will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to

me. And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any

time to recall these things. For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we

made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had

been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the

Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is

my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice

come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the

prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as

to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in

your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a

matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will,

but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

esus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up

on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his

face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw

two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were

speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now

Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed

awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were

leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make

three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing

what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and

they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that

said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” When the voice had spoken,

Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the

things they had seen.

The Birthday Prayer Watch over your children, O Lord, as their days increase;

bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they

stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall;

and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the

days of their lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sermon The Rev. Anne Weatherholt, Rector The Nicene Creed (said by all, standing as you are able)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and

earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally

begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true

God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things

were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the

power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was

made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered

death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the

Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his

kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds

from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and

glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to

come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People, Form IV

Let us pray for the Church and for the world. (response after each petition)

Leader Lord, in your mercy

People Hear our prayer.

Silence

The Celebrant adds this concluding collect

Celebrant O God, in the transfiguration of your Son you confirmed the

mysteries of the faith by the witness of Moses and Elijah, and in the voice from the

bright cloud declaring Jesus your beloved Son, you foreshadowed our adoption as

your children. Make us heirs with Christ of your glory, and bring us to enjoy its

fullness, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you

and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The Confession and Absolution Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned

against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we

have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not

loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that

we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name.

Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God, have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins

through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of

the Holy Spirit, keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Celebrant The Peace of the Lord be always with you.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION

Every baptized person is called to ministry. The Education for Ministry

(EfM) program provides people from all walks of life with the education

“to be” Christians and to carry out their ministry. All Christians need

education which supports their faith and prepares them to express that faith in

day-to-day settings. EfM is a worldwide program developed by the School of

Theology of The University of the South. The curriculum supports the

conviction that the foundation for bringing Christ to the world lies in a church

empowered by an active, theologically articulate laity. EfM is a four year

program, committed one year at a time, containing studies of the Old

Testament, the New Testament, church history, and theological and moral

choices. The format includes small seminar groups in size from 6 to 12

students, trained mentors and thought-provoking texts, theological reflection

practiced regularly, and prayer and worship in a community of study. A new

EfM group is being formed and will begin on Tuesday nights in September.

There is a tuition and book fee for the class. If you need help with this cost,

please speak to Anne+. Classes meet at St. John’s Episcopal Church in

Hagerstown. For more information, contact Sue Wert at 443-838-1671.

You may also want to look into EfM online, efm.sewanee.edu/efm-online.
