Polish IndianFascinations & Friendship

Poland has always been fascinated by the rich culture of India.Polish traveler and sailor Krzysztof Pawlowski was the first Pole to visit India in 1596;

he travelled from Poland via Portugal to Goa.

The first Chair of Sanskrit was established at Jagiellonian University (Krakow) in 1893.

Andrzej Gawroński (1885 - 1927) Indologist, ex-traordinary linguist and polyglot who knew 60 languages. His Sanskrit handbook is the main textbook for Indology students in Poland.

Jam Saheb with Polish children in Christmas costumes

Maharja Digvijay Sinhji

During WWII, thousands of Poles were deported to Siberian labor camps and lived in horrific condi-tions where death was imminent. Maharja Digvi-jay Sinhji (1895 - 1966) (‘Jam Saheb’) of Nawa-nagar, India saved and gave refuge to thousands of orphaned Polish children. In 1941, he adopted the first 60 children to secure their safety. During the

children’s years in India he ensured that Polish traditions, language and culture were preserved. In recognition of his courage and compassion, Jam Saheb received posthumously the Com-mander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, and there are streets named after him in Warsaw and Krakow to honor his noble compassion.

From Gandhi to WalesaFreedom and Compassion

Mahatma Gandhi (1869 – 1948) was the preeminent leader of nationalism in Brit-ish-ruled India. Employing non-violent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights and free-dom across the world.

“You must be the change you want to see in the world.”Mahatma Gandhi

Maurice Frydman (1901 - 1976), known as Swami Bharatananda, was a Polish engineer and humanitarian who spent the later part of his life in India and became a disciple of Gandhi. He co-drafted a new constitu-tion for the State of Aundh, edited and translated Nisar-gadatta Maharaj’s recorded conversations into the 1973 English-language book I Am That, and co-founded the Indian- Polish Library in Madras. Frydman also aided Polish orphans’ trans-fer from Siberia to India, Kenya and New Zealand.

Wanda Dynowska (1888 - 1971), of Polish nobility, went to India in 1935 and collaborated with Gandhi in assisting Tibetan refu-gees crossing to India. She co-founded the Indian-Polish Library in Madras which for over 30 years was a major editorial and publishing body for Pol-ish translations of main Hindu religious texts, contemporary poetry and literature, and many books were translated by Dynowska from Polish to English, Tamil, and Hindi.

Father Zelazek (1918 - 2006), Polish priest and missionary, survived the Dachau concentration camp. In the 1950’s he went to India to work with the Adiba tribes and beginning in 1970 he organized a leprosy colony in Puri for over 600 people, providing shelter, work and treat-ments which he oversaw for 30 years. Fr. Zelazek was short-listed twice for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and 2003.

Lech Wałęsa, Solidarity leader and Presi-dent of Poland, helped end communism in Poland and Eastern Europe. A Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1983, Walesa con-sidered himself a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. “Gandhi was not confined to In-dia or South Africa alone, but the apostle of peace was relevant to the entire world.” Walesa felt that Gandhian philosophy and its legacy would be instrumental in ending world unrest and would be the basis for lasting peace and successful globalization.
