Minutes April 30, 2007 Boston Mass

11:30 am – 1:00 pm

Call to Order Introductions/Attendance (Pascuzzi, Barohn, Drachman, Kaminski, Richman, Weiss, Kissel, Sanders, Massey, Daroff, Pourmand, Weinberg, Goldstein, Ruff, Mozaffar) Approval of October 7, 2006 meeting minutes: approved Pascuzzi State of the Foundation Pascuzzi 1) Current MGFA Board leadership headed by new Chair Sam Schuhof (Esther Land has

completed her tenure as Chair). The lay board has significant new membership and strong leadership and the dynamics of the board appear to be favorable.

2) Administration (Jan Golden, Mat Spaan, and staff) provide a solid administrative infrastructure for accomplishing the goals of the MGFA

3) Chapter membership appears stable at this juncture. 4) Recent annual MGFA meeting in Washington well attended and given superb reviews by

attendees. 5) Financial status of the MGFA has taken an important new direction. Main new development is

the successful acquisition of large gifts. Names and locations of the 5 major gifts in the past year were announced. Cummings Research Endowment – California; William Vargas – Ohio; Doreen Kearschner – Cleveland, Ohio; Florence Munro – Toronto, Canada; Kenneth Hess – Lansing, Michigan. Most significant is the Cummings gift of approximately $4 million (gifted to serve as a basis endowment the interest of which is to fund research over the long-term).

6) MGFA leadership is supportive of funding proposals as recommended by the MSAB. 7) At the request of the MSAB the MGFA board approved the establishment of $50K and call for

proposals to fund a planning grant for clinical trial(s) of mycophenolate.

Research Update Pascuzzi/Barohn

MGFA will fund 3 new Osserman fellowship this year as well as another second-year fellowship (4 stipends in total) as well as three Viets. Implications of the Cummings gift and the intent to grow the endowment were discussed. MGFA leadership is supportive of funding proposals as recommended by the MSAB and requesting a list of research goals and projects for targeted fundraising. CellCept Study Group activities summarized. This committee (Sanders, Meriggioli, Barohn, Massey, Pascuzzi, Howard, Siddiqi) has explored the implications and meaning of the 2 recently completed controlled trials of mycophenolate in MG. The group has explored new/different models for a clinical trial in order to clarify the role of this drug in the treatment of MG. Several potential models have been drafted and discussed. The committee believes that it is important to design a new trial for mycophenolate in MG. At the request of the MSAB the MGFA board approved the establishment of $50K and call for proposals to fund a planning

grant for clinical trial(s) of mycophenolate. Rick Barohn emphasized the importance of maintaining a commitment to basic research but also developing a more robust emphasis on support for clinical research by the MGFA. While the MGFA will not have sufficient resources to fund clinical trials it should have (with its new and growing research endowment) sufficient resources to fund planning grants and pilot proposals in the clinical arena. Some modification of the research committee structure and function is likely in order to optimally manage the basic and also the clinical research activities.

Committee Reports Scientific Program Committee: Dr Merrigioli and Dr Wolfe will coordinate planning for the October 2007 Scientific session in Washington DC in conjunction with the ANA meeting. 11th International Meeting update: Kaminski/Barohn Outstanding 3-day program in place for May 14-16 Chicago with advance registration exceeding expectations. The MSAB salutes the extensive efforts and skills of Drs Barohn and Kaminski for creating and realizing such a magnificent program.

Professional & Public Information Committee Pascuzzi Updated version of Medications and Myasthenia Gravis (A Reference for Health Care Professionals) completed and posted on the MGFA website January 2007. CellCept statements (based on results of the two controlled trials) prepared and posted on website and in MGFA newsletter. Subcommittee assigned to review, update, correct old and new website literature and documents includes Dr. Pourmand, Dr. Engstrom, and Dr. Arnaudo. Dr. Chip Howard has submitted the major work entitled Myasthenia Gravis: A Manuel for the Health Care Provider (Professional Manual). It is going through review prior to posting and dissemination. Research & Grants Committee Drachman Nine solid proposals for the Osserman fellowships. Three recommended for funding. One project from last year recommended for funding for a second year (Dr. Wu). See Dr. Drachman’s written report for details.

Viets Fellowship Committee Pascuzzi for Penn Two applications thus far for 2007. Both will likely be funded. Clinical Research Standards Committee Phillips No report at this time. MSAB EC considering a modification of this committee and its charge.

Nomination committee. Convened December 2006 in Durham and recommended slate for new officers beginning October 2007 is as follows. Chair: Dr. Richard Barohn Vice-Chair: Dr. Henry Kaminski Secretary: Dr. Gil Wolfe Assistant Secretary: Dr. Matthew Merrigioli Immediate Past Chair: Dr. Robert Pascuzzi

New member nomination: Bashar Katirji, M.D., F.A.C.P. from Case Western reserve. Proposed by Dr. Daroff. Second by Dr. Kaminski. CV reviewed and discussed. MSAB by unanimous vote elects Dr. Katiriji to the MSAB.

New Business

Centers of Excellence (committee to explore the establishment of COE for MG program) Research 5-10 year strategic plan (committee to develop an outline of appropriate goals/targets for basic and clinical research, prioritization, and estimation of necessary resources. CellCept Proposal Funding (see above) Rahman Pourmand was named “Doctor of the Year” by the MGFA at its annual meeting earlier this month in Washington DC. The entire MSAB salutes Dr. Pourmand.

Nomination for Membership to the MGFA MSAB, Jonathan Katz, MD I wish to second the nomination of Jonathan Katz, MD to be elected to the MGFA MSAB. Dr. Barohn is submitting the primary nomination. Dr. Katz is well-known as a neuromuscular authority and is active within the neuromuscular section of the AAN. He is among the foremost thought-leaders on the use of IVIg in neuromuscular diseases including MG and has taken a central role in working with various health care agencies and organizations in an effort to optimize patient care issues (including access) with regard to IVIg. His impact on the MGFA will be immediate in that the IVIg situation is increasingly complex problematic for many patients and treating physicians. Sincerely Robert M Pascuzzi MD
