The Valhalla Memorial Handler’s Promise 2017By Beth & Chet Chandler, Lagniappe Vizslas
This trophy, a limited-edition bronze sculpture of a pair of bobwhite quail, entitled “Quiet Repose” by artist Burl Jones, is presented in memory of:
Full English Champion, CH Valley Hunter’s Valhalla CD, MH, VC, ROM – “Ziva.”
Lagniappe Vizslas is pleased to award this trophy annually to encourage the owner/trainer/handler who has shown the greatest improvement in handling skills over the past year and to promote our versatile vizslas.
First, here is a brief biography of our trophy’s namesake.
Ziva was born in England. She quickly became a Full English Champion which required both confirmation and field championships. Ziva hunted in the Moors of Scotland before moving on to the United States to begin her AKC title quests. Within just a few months, Ziva earned our first Florida-resident Master Hunter title, her AKC Championship and her AKC Companion Dog title becoming a true Versatile Vizsla.
Sadly, Ziva passed away at the young age of 8 years old which was way too early, but not before she had the chance to teach handlers and judges alike what a perfect hunting Vizsla should be. We are forever grateful to Ziva for the beautiful confirmation, obedience, and hunting memories etched in our minds.
Now, we want to tell you about this year’s recipient of the Valhalla Memorial Handler’s Promise Trophy.
This year we have selected a person that has owned three vizslas that we know of. This person got their first vizsla while still in college and traveling a great deal. Just like every vizsla owner, the dog went everywhere this person went. Then around 2005, this person got their second vizsla. This sparked an interest to visit the homeland of the vizsla -- Hungary. The trip to Hungary was wonderful and well documented. We saw loads of wonderful pictures, as well as a great trip write up in the TBVC Newsletter. Together with the second vizsla, they began a title quest and so far have dabbled in a great variety of sporting venues for our versatile vizslas. They have earned a Rally Novice title, a Junior Hunter title, a Barn Hunt title, a Canine Good Citizen title, as well as a Canine Good Citizen Urban title. They have also been certified for Nose Work. Now with the third vizsla, they have earned a North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association, a.k.a. NAVHDA, Prize I Natural Ability title. They are taking both agility and obedience classes. One of their practice sessions went viral while teaching the weaves poles in agility. It was wonderful seeing the bond between the owner and dog. They have just titled in the new and exciting sport of FAST CAT.
It is our great pleasure to present the beautiful Valhalla Memorial Handler’s Promise 2017 Trophy to: Daniel Neger. Congratulations Danny!

University of Minnesota Develops Cancer Drug That Helps Dogs With Hemangiosarcoma
The results from the trial not only benefits dogs with this particular form of cancer, but may be applicable to humans too.

University of Minnesota has announced the breakthrough trial of a new drug that improves survival rates in dogs diagnosed with a cancer called hemangiosarcoma (HSA). The research and results were published recently published in the journal of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics. “This is likely the most significant advance in the treatment of canine HSA in the last three decades,” said study co-author Jaime Modiano, V.M.D., Ph.D. professor in the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and member of the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota.Canine HSA is a common, aggressive, incurable sarcoma, and is remarkably similar to angiosarcoma, which affects humans. Both cancers typically spread before diagnosis and the survival time for affected patients is extremely short, even with aggressive treatment. Only 50 percent of humans diagnosed with angiosarcoma live longer than 16 months; the prognosis for dogs with HSA is similarly dire. Less than 50 percent of dogs will survive 4 to 6
months and only about 10 percent will be alive one year after their diagnosis. The study tested a drug called eBAT, invented by study senior author Daniel Vallera, Ph.D., professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School and Masonic Cancer Center. “eBAT was created to specifically target tumors while causing minimal damage to the immune system. HSA is a vascular cancer, meaning it forms from blood vessels. eBAT was selected for this trial because it can simultaneously target the tumor and its vascular system,” Vallera said. Traditional cancer treatments have side effects that can be very hard on patients. “In this trial we aimed for a sweet spot by identifying a dose of eBAT that was effective to treat the cancer, but caused no appreciable harm to the patient. Essentially we’re treating the cancer in a safer and more effective way, improving quality of life and providing a better chance at survival,” lead study author Antonella Borgatti, D.V.M., M.S., associate professor with the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine said. eBAT was tested on 23 dogs of
various breeds, both large and small, with HSA of the spleen. Dogs received three treatments of eBAT after surgery to remove the tumor and before conventional chemotherapy. The drug treatment improved the 6-month survival rate to approximately 70 percent Furthermore, five of the 23 dogs that received eBAT treatment lived more than 450 days. Not only is that good news for dogs, it’s good news for people too. The similarities between this cancer and angiosarcoma in humans, and the fact that many other tumor types can be targeted by eBAT, make a strong case for translating this drug into clinical trials for human cancer patients. The researchers want these results to bring hope to those touched by this disease. “This drug was invented here at the University of Minnesota, developed here, manufactured here, tested here and showed positive results here. We would also like this drug to achieve positive outcomes for humans here,” Modiano said. “The ultimate goal for all of us is to create a world in which we no longer fear cancer,” he added.

Broccoli Salad
1 head broccoli6 to 8 slices cooked bacon, crumbled1/2 cup red onion, sliced very thin1/2 cup raisins, optional2/3 cup sharp Cheddar, grated coarsely1/3 cup mayonnaise1/3 cup sour cream
1/4 teaspoon celery seed1/3 cup raisins 2 tbls sliced almondsSalt and freshly ground black pepper2 tablespoons white vinegar1/4 cup sugar
DirectionsFry bacon crisply, drain and set aside.*Trim off the large leaves from the broccoli stem. Remove the tough stalk at the end and wash broccoli head thoroughly. Cut the head into bite size flowerets and place in a large bowl. Add the onions, raisins, celery seed and almonds.In a small bowl mix mayonnaise, sour cream, vinegar and sugar. Add to broccoli mixture and toss gently. Fold cheese into mixture. Adjust seasoning as needed.Refrigerate for 2 hours or over night for best result!*Crumble bacon on individual servings. It’s gets soggy if mixed in with ot her ingredients.
