Greetings from the District Governorby DG Robert Miller

I trust that all have survivedHalloween and are mindful ofall that we have to be thankfulfor as Thanksgiving is almosthere. The Lions motto is “WeServe”. We can be thankfulthat we are able to serveothers that have needs thatthey cannot meet without ourhelp. If we could some howcount the hours we as Lions

put in each year to enable us to serve those that are unableto help themselves, it might surprise us. As we enter intothe Thanksgiving and Christmas Season I would like to saythank you to the Lions of District 10 for caring enough and forgiving meaning to our motto “We Serve”. Mary and I wouldlike to take this opportunity to thank each of you and wishyou the best as we enter into the Holiday season.

Membership: Same song, different verse. If each of uswould just ask just one person to join us think of what wewould have if just 10% of us were successful. If we don’task it is a sure thing we will not get new members.

Kid Sight: If the below the bridge Lions would havematched the above bridge Lions in Kid Sight screeningsand donations we could have screened over 5,000children and ended up with over $45,000 in operatingfunds last year in the state of Michigan. As it was, it wasless than half that amount. Thanks District 10 for a goodjob, but lets do even better this year. If your club has notbeen part of this project, why not? We will get a cameraand training to use the camera to you any where in theDistrict. I would sure like to see some action in the far north.

Leader Dog: The Governor, Vice Governor and thecommittee chairperson visited Leader Dog headquartersthis year and we came away feeling good that we are apart of this program. This is a 70 year program started byLions and supported by Lions. We were able to talk topeople that had lost their sight and with the help of LeaderDogs are able to live a more normal life.

Michigan Eye Bank: This is another vision program thatwe as a District support. We have a representative in theMarquette area that will come to your club and present thework they do. I would recommend that you takeadvantage of this. Call District 10 Eye Bank Director forinformation. Larry Klaus at 906-249-1242. P.S. Don’tforget to go to the Secretary of State office and get a littlered heart for your driver’s license listing you as an organdonor. Give the gift of life.

Eye Exams and Glasses: Each month when I receive themonthly activities reports, several clubs report helpingpeople in their own area with vision care that they couldnot afford on their own. Once again giving meaning to ourmotto “WE SERVE”.

Bay Cliff Health Camp: They need our help andsupport. We promised our help and support. They aredoing what they promised us they would do. We are notdoing very well on keeping our promise to them. We cando better. Let’s do better.

Second Vice District Governor: We have to elect asecond Vice District Governor at our 2009 convention. Ifwe don’t, we will not have a qualified candidate for firstVice Governor the next year. We will be listing therequirements for this position in the next issue of themagazine and it is currently also avaialbe on the Districtwebsite.

Veterans Day: Veterans Day is November 11th.Another thing to give thanks for at Thanksgiving is ourveterans. They served so we can live free. Many of thempaid a great price for our freedom. If you are a veteran,Thanks for your service to our country. If you know aveteran, tell them thanks for what they have given for us.Also let’s not forget the men and women of our armedforces that are even now putting their lives on the line forthe cause of freedom.

Club Presidents: Don’t forget that you have to send aletter to the Governor recommending the Secretary for a100% award. Check the back of the roster book for therequirements.

Club Secretaries: Send your reports on time. AlsoNovember 15th is the deadline to file your club’s 990reports with the IRS. Don’t be late. Another thing, is yourclub incorporated? If not, then club members could beheld liable in case of a law suit.

Club Treasurers: Make sure that the Club bills are paidin a timely manner. The International Dues and District/State dues are due on receipt of the billing. Ensure thatthese are paid to insure that your club is not put into aposition to having their charter revoked by LionsInternational. There are still 6 Lions Clubs that have notpaid the 1st half of 2008-09 Dues and the 2nd half billingwill be going out the first week of January.

As we approach Thanksgiving remember our motto andlet’s remember to let those around us see just what thatmeans. Thanks again for allowing me to serve as Governorof District 10 and remember that working together we getthe job done. Working alone we get tired anddiscouraged.

Vice District Governor CommentsBy VDG Don Wojakowski

Greetings from your Vice DistrictGovernor. This has been a verybusy transition for me and mywife Jean. We just returned fromthe USA/Canada Forum inSaskatoon, Saskatchewan,Canada which was informativeand helpful. A sampling of theseminars attended was the Lions

History, Lions Law, and Lions Ceremonies. I would highlyrecommend Lions members in attending a futureLeadership Forum. There is so much information andtraining available that you can use in every aspect of yourlives, both personnel and professional.

Single District 10 won the award for the highestpercentage of Lions preset at the Forum. On a personalnote, we had the privilege of staying at a Canadian PastDistrict Governor’s home. The weather was perfect forthe entire week that we were gone. It was nice to visit andsee new sights, but it was great to get back home.

Since being elected Vice District Governor, I have had thehonor of visiting many Lions Clubs of Single District 10,and I am looking forward to visiting more in the future. Ihave been meeting interesting and colorful people, seeinghow their unique clubs operated; listen to their problemsand offering suggestions as remedies. If any Lion Club hasa problem or question, fill free to contact either myself orDistrict Governor Bob Miller for assistance. You’re ClubPresident, Secretary and Treasurer has the 2008-09Organizational Roster for the contact information. Thisroster book also contains the information for the ZoneChairpersons as well as the various committee chairs suchas Bay Cliff, Leader Dog, Project KidSight to name a few.The information is also available on the Single District 10website, www.district10lions.org under the directorysection. If you have email, your username and passwordto access this section was sent to you this past summer. Ifyou have lost and have not received the information, eithercontact the District 10 Informational Technology chairmanBruce LaBelle by phone or email him [email protected].

The Multiple District 11 (MD11) claims they are gettingmore new members and starting Leo Clubs. However, wein SD10 are having trouble keeping the number of clubsthat we currently have. As a District overall, we continueto lose as many members as we bring in. So far this FiscalYear we have recruited 39 new members however wehave lost 54 (7 deceased and 47 dropped for a number ofreasons) for a net loss of 15. Do you have any suggestionsto help us retain our membership and recruit new people?Invite a potential candidate to a meeting or out to lunch. These are some ideas that I have tried, and they haveworked. Please be creative with your recruiting ideas andshare them with other Lions members. We can not letMD11 outdo us on membership recruitment and retention.

My wife Jean and I had the opportunities recently to traveldown to the Leader Dogs for the Blind Facility inRochester, Michigan. We were very impressed by thework that they do there and the dedicated staff that workswith the visually impaired and the Seeing Eye dogs.

We saw how the dogs from puppyhood, went through theextensive training program, to be qualified to become acertified Leader Dog. After the dog completes its trainingprogram, it is then matched to an individual/student.Students coming to Leader Dog to receive a guide dogcomplete a 26 day program that includes country, city andnighttime travel, how to incorporate a Leader Dog into adaily routine and dog care knowledge.

It costs $38,000 to raise and train a Leader Dog. As aLeader Dog, they are able to perform their Seeing Eyeduties for nine years. We felt that the trip to Leader Dogfor the Blind was very informative, educational and wellworth the trip. If anyone is in the Rochester area, I urgeyou to take some time and visit the facility. The staff willgive you a tour of its facilities and a demonstration of whatis like to be blind.

“WE SERVE” is

more than just two wordsto Lions all over the world. They describe, simply yetpowerfully, exactly whyour organization exists andwhat we do. It is morethan a motto – it is a wayof life for all who aremembers. As Lions, we

constantly look for people in need and areas where wecan help. Given the state of our times Lions are about tobecome very, very busy – so busy that we will need all thehelp, as an organization, we can get. The more memberswe have, obviously, the more effective our SERVICE.

So, explain to me, or better yet, to yourselves, how it isthat an organization with such a powerful and fullydescriptive two-word motto has such poor publicidentification. You do not believe me; it is true. Do not takemy word for it. Here is a test I would like you to try. Asksomeone you do not know AND WHO DOESN’TKNOW YOU if there is a Lions Club in town and when/where, they meet. If they do not know, or are not sure, ask them if they know a Lions member. Even if they knowtry asking if they know, what Lions actually do. You willprobably find that three to four out of five will not have theanswers. That is more than a real shame. It hurtsrecruiting. With all the good things we do, you would thinkwe would have to fight people off to keep our numbersdown.

As Lions, we seem to make the assumption that, becausewe know all about Lions then everybody in town does. That assumption is flawed. An active PR program will curethat. Some programs are easy to implement because theyprovide a service readily identifiable with Lions. ProjectKidsight and Leader Dog immediately come to mind. Some fundraisers are also Lions identifiers, such as White

Cane and raising funds for the Salvation Army during theChristmas season (while wearing a Lions vest, hat orapron for identification). Articles and pictures in thenewspaper are helpful. Wearing a Lions hat (men) or pinon your lapel or blouse offer possible opportunities forquestions about Lions (I wear mine around town quiteoften as does Lion “Duke”). Name recognition makesrecruiting easier. A Lions club with many members canmore effectively SERVE than a club with only 10 to 15members who are active.

Number seven of the Lions Code of Ethics is clear as tothe purpose of our organization. It states, “To aid myfellow men by giving my sympathy to those in distress, myaid to the weak and my substance to the needy.” Thestatement is clear and gives us no wiggle room. That iswhat we do as Lions – plain and simple. As well written asit is, however, it still is made much clearer to all with thosetwo simple words: “WE SERVE.” Let us increase ourmembership so that we may SERVE better.

Bay Cliff Health Camp, A Local ProjectBy Kris and Bill Rowe, Co-chairs

Now that I have your attention, Bay Cliff is still officially aSingle District 10 project. This article is a reminder toeveryone but is primarily aimed at those who tend to seeBay Cliff as a far away project that doesn’t really affectthe local people they serve.

If we had a representative from each of the 60 clubs in thedistrict standing and asked everyone who had a camperfrom their area at Bay Cliff this year to sit down, therewould only be 22 Lions still standing. If we askedeveryone who had a camper between 03 and 07 to sitdown there would only be 6 Lions standing. This figureonly represents the summer camp, and many of thecampers have attended multiple years.

Bay Cliff is having another busy year. This summer’s campsaw 169 campers, followed by a camp for young SpecialOlympians, Camp Independence and the Post Poliocamp. The capital campaign, “Building for the Future”, isentering its final phase, “Completing the Dream”. The newlaundry unit is complete as are the teen center and stafflounge, all of which are major improvements. The campradio station also went on the air this summer.

Still needing additional funding are the boys units, ShadyNook, (a Lions Club project), Arts and Crafts, RecreationCenter and the Aquatic Therapy Center. Additional Lionssupport is needed for the Shady Nook project as well ascontinuing our outstanding support of the day-to-dayoperations.

To date, $111,317 in capital campaign funds have beenearmarked for Shady Nook. While most of the fundscame from Lions Clubs there were some individualdonations as well.

As near as we can determine, the grant has not beenapplied for; we do, however, have much of the informationrequired to press forward and plan to do so within thenext couple of weeks. There is a lot of work to do now, although, the actual submittal of the grant will not takeplace for a while because it requires a completed set ofspecifications which are costly so they will not be availableuntil we are closer to the funding mark.

For the period of 05-Sep-07 thru 04-Sep-08, 38 District10 Lions Clubs donated $12,889 for Bay Cliff operations.I am sure that many clubs make their donations in the falland this information only shows a partial picture. Please stress the importance of continued support to BayCliff to all the District 10 clubs and remind the treasurersto designate funds sent to either the Capital Campaign orGeneral operations.

If you or someone you know is planning a personalcontribution to Bay Cliff please consider earmarking it forShady Nook, it will speed up reaching our goal and gettingthe project complete. Plan on seeing regular updates in thefuture.

Bark River Lions Continue Support

The Bark River Lions continue to support the Bay CliffHealth Camp Operations and Capital Campaign. Follow-ing a presentation by Bay Ciff Health Camp Director TimBennett, the Bark River Lions Club presented checks forboth projects and pledged continued support in the futureto the children of Bay Cliff.

Pictured below is Bark River Lions President ScottKwarciancy (right) presenting Bay Cliff Health CampDirector Tim Bennett with a check for $5,000 for theShady Nook Project and a second check for $1000 forthe operations of the Camp. The Bark River Lions havecommitted over $30,000 to the Shady Nook Project.

Long Range Planning CommitteeBy Art Anderson

The District 10 Lions Long Range Planning Committeemembers were asked to identify areas that the Districtshould address over the next five years. While these areonly the preliminary items we feel should be studied, others will be developed over the coming year. We will notrecommend the structures as to how these suggestionsshould be implemented.

Leadership Development: The District should develop aleadership pool to fill the three major leadership positionsnow mandated by Lions International (First and SecondVice District Governors and the District Governor).History has shown a lack of qualified volunteers willing totake the Vice District Governor’s position withoutsignificant pressure being exerted just prior to elections. While the club level committee structure (if used properly)should develop club leaders, no such structure is used onthe District level other than the minimal requirementsmandated by Lions International and the District Bylaws. For example, we recycle Past District Governors inleadership positions of committees rather than developingfuture leaders from within the committee structure.

Public Relations should be increased at both the Districtand club levels. Community awareness of LionsInternational’s impact at the local, regional, national, andinternational levels is weak at best. While our club’s deedsmay be recognized within our own communities, thebroader basis of who we are and what we as anorganization is lost, especially to younger members of thecommunity. As a result, membership recruitment, retention, and fundraising are negatively affected. We need to “step itup” and blow our own horn, along with educating the

public as to the immense impact Lions International has onthe world stage and the privilege of being a member.

Communications between the District and clubs should bestrengthened. While the District magazine and the DistrictWebsite (www.district10lions.org) are beneficial, there stillexists the “District is them and the clubs are us” attitude.Clubs are not feeling an ownership in the District and seethe District structure as a disconnected empirical entityrather than a structure linking all the clubs together.

The loss of our traditions and therefore our identity isviewed as weakening the structure. Our membership, bothcollectively and individually seems to be ignorant of ourmotto, slogans, Code of Ethics and the essence of whatshould distinguish us as Lions Clubs. While the Districtmight not be able to change that, we can educate andencourage the clubs to do so.

An annual assessment should be made of all District clubsprojected out for the following three years addressing suchareas of membership, leadership, or other areas ofconcern. This would allow time for possible assistance orintervention prior to the loss of a club.

Strengthen the educational components presented at theDistrict level for club officers. This could include Robert’sRules of Order, agenda development, simplifiedbookkeeping, or a host of other items requested by clubs.Again, as often happens, people move into officer orcommittee positions without some of the basic informationthat could make their volunteerism a much more pleasantexperience.

The Chassell Lions Club donated $3,000 to OmegaHouse for supplies to build a storage shed. With the helpof local volunteers and donated siding from McGannBuilding Supply, the shed was completed and will be usedto house the snowblower, lawn mower, lawn furniture andother landscaping materials.

Crystal Falls Lions Accomplish SuccessfulFundraisers

Once again the Crystal Falls Lions Club, under the Co-Chair of Lion Norm Heikkinen, and King Lion DonConnors, concluded a very successful White Cane Drive. After the final donation was received the project ended uptotaling $3,858.00 for community contribution and 138community hours for the participating Lions.

Crystal Falls Lions Club Bass Festival was not assuccessful as 2007, bad weather on the final day, but italways ends on a pleasant note when you realize yourefforts have provided another $13,037.47 which will bedistributed to the charitable organizations within ourcommunity. The number of hours the Lions spent in thepreparation and participation of this worthwhile endeavortotaled more than 500. The spouses, siblings, children andgrand children of the Lions, although most are notmembers, contributed at least another 200 hours.

In recognition of the above, and as we have done in thepast years, we combined our first meeting in August toincluded an awards presentation and an appreciationdinner for those helpers mentioned above. King Lion DonConnors presented the following awards: Thirty-two (32)perfect attendance awards. Twenty-year chevrons to LionCal Bauer and Lion Jim Jauquet. Ten-year chevron wentto Lion Don Bauer. To top the evening off in the awardsarea special guest District Governor Bob Miller, inattendance with wife Mary, made the presentation of theMelvin Jones Award to Lion Norm Heikkinen. A total of68 Lions and guests attended this enjoyable gathering.

A LIONS OF MICHIIGAN STATE PROJECT

History & Background The Lions of Michigan Service Foundation, Inc. (Lions of Michigan Foundation) was created in the early 1980's to assist Michigan Lions Clubs in improving the quality of life of the disadvantaged. The group of Michigan Lions who organized the Foundation envisioned a Lions organization that could address serious human needs within communities that were beyond the reach of most local Lions Clubs and other community service organizations. One of the Foundation’s very 1st cases involved helping a Michigan Lions Club assist the family of an 8 year-old boy that was facing raising over $100,000 for a liver transplant that was needed to save the boy’s life. The case further established the need for the Lions of Michigan Foundation and fostered the development of the slogan “Partners In Service”.

IRS Designation & Exempt Status There are two basic types of 501(c)(3) organizations – Private Foundations and Public Charities. The Lions of Michigan Foundation is recognized as a Public Charity meaning it receives broad public support or 2/3 or more of the Foundation’s support comes from the general public. Private Foundations typically are created and funded in total by a an individual, family or corporation to carry-out the charitable desires of the donor/creator. The major difference between the Lions of Michigan Foundation and an individual Lions Club is its charitable status. Contributions to Public Charities like the Foundation are tax-deductible to the donor, whereas contributions to Lions Clubs which are Social Welfare Organizations designated under Section 501(c)(4) of the IRS Code are not tax-deductible. However, Lions Clubs have fewer restrictions on their funds.

Management & Office Staff The Foundation is managed by an elected board consisting of two Trustees from each district, a Treasurer, the Immediate Past President, the SD 10 District Governor, the MD11 Council Chair and a representative of the Lions Hearing Center. The administrative staff consists of the Executive Director, Building Advisor, Human Resources Advisor, Legal Advisor and Administrative Assistant. The Executive Director and the Administrative Assistant are the only paid employees, and they are responsible for the daily operation of the Foundation. The Foundation has 7 active committees which are: Audit, Finance & Investments, Constitution & By-Laws, Executive, Fund Development & Marketing, Grants & Assistance Review, Human Resources and Lion Mints. These Committees consist of not only Board members but include Lions Club members from throughout the state. Any Lion member can be considered to be on a Foundation Committee except the Executive Committee which is comprised of the Board officers.

Fund Raising Activities Nearly 90% of the Lion of Michigan Foundation’s funding is derived from the Lion Mints Program, the annual Sight & Hearing Sweepstakes and donations.

Like many Lions and Lioness Clubs that raise thousands of dollars each year, the sale of Lion Mints is the Foundation’s most successful fundraiser. Over 300 Michigan Lion and Lioness Clubs purchase their Lion Mint products from the Lions of Michigan Foundation on an annual basis. Lions Mints are sold in offices, restaurants, gas stations, hardware stores and many other businesses throughout Michigan. Several clubs now sell Lion Mints directly to store owners for resale. The direct sales approach enables clubs to cut down on the pilferage that sometimes occurs in the counter-top tray sales program.

The Foundation’s 2nd best fundraiser is the annual Sight & Hearing Sweepstakes. Ticket sales normally exceed $75,000, and nearly half of all the profit is returned to the Lion and Lioness Clubs that help the Foundation by selling the raffle tickets. The funds returned to the participating clubs can be used for local club projects. Participating clubs assume no risk for participating - they have no costs for printing, promotion, etcetera, and there is not sales commitment. All unsold raffle tickets can be returned.

Donor Recognition The Foundation has two distinguished awards to recognize outstanding contributions. The Ken E. Lautzenheiser Fellowship and John S. Noel Fellowship are the Lions of Michigan Foundation’s versions of LCIF’s Melvin Jones Fellowship. The Ken E. Lautzenheiser Fellow is available to donors of $500 or more, and the John S. Noel Fellow is available to donors of $1,000 or more.

Ken E. Lautzenheiser (International Director from 1985-87) and John S. Noel (Michigan’s first President of Lions Clubs International from 1923-24) honorees receive an attractive plaque and lapel pin.

Charitable Programs The Lions of Michigan Foundation provides access to affordable medical care for the uninsured and underinsured and programs designed to improve youth and community development and to foster independence for the disabled and elderly. Priority is placed on programs that emphasize sight and hearing improvement.

Michigan Lions Clubs can obtain funding from the Foundation for Individual Assistance, Hearing Aids and Emergency Disaster Relief or establish a Restricted Account or Designated Agreement to complete other club or community projects.

Planned Giving Program am The Foundation’s Planned Giving Program offers Lions of Michigan members and their families the opportunity to undertake professional estate planning at discounted rates. The Program will help you protect your family and assets while supporting Lions of Michigan Foundation programs and reducing your taxes.

No matter what your situation, you owe it to yourself and your family to plan for the future. An effective estate plan will consider a variety of circumstances that may occur such as disability, a lack of control over your own affairs, a loss of retirement income, and tax issues. As a Lion member you can quickly create a plan that will provide for your loved ones while saving thousands of dollars in unnecessary legal fees, court costs, and taxes typically paid by those without a proper Estate Plan.

I was ready to start kindergarten, but I needed special digital hearing aids so that I would be able to interact like a normal hearing child. The hearing aids cost over $4,000. The Lions Club and the Lions of Michigan Foundation helped me get the hearing aids I needed. They worked so well that when I first had them on, I asked, “Why is everyone shouting at me?” Thanks to YOU, I had a great start in kindergarten!

I am 58 years old. Recently, the Lions Club and the Lions of Michigan Foundation helped improve my life by supplying hearing

aids for both ears.

I was a cook in a restaurant, but I had to quit as the muscles that controlled my eyelids became weaker and weaker. The Lions Club and the Lions of Michigan Foundation paid for the surgery to correct the problem and I was able to return to work and support my family. Thanks for caring!

I was having difficulty seeing in school. My mom, a single parent, could not afford to buy glasses for me. Lions paid for the exam and glasses. Now I am doing much better in my school work. In fact, my last

grade card was all “A’s”!

I am a 40 year-old bookkeeper that had cataracts develop in both eyes. I could no longer work.

The Lions Club came to my rescue and with help from the Club, the Lions District and the Lions of Michigan Foundation, I had cataract surgery on both eyes and I am back to work!

Michigan Lions and Lioness can honor departed members or special individuals with a tax deductible contribution to the Lions of Michigan Foundation. In this way, you will know that both the memory and service of the departed loved one will be preserved.

The donations received will be used to “CHANGE LIFES” by improving or restoring sight or hearing for needy individuals in Michigan. Requests for help come through local Lions Clubs and Trustees that you have elected in your district to serve on the board of Trustees of the Lions of Michigan Foundation.

A donation to the Foundation is a great way of marking an anniversary for a club or for individuals. It is a great way to honor the service of Governors and District Officers. A donation to the Foundation is a great gift for birthdays or special occa-sions as the recipient will then know they are helping to improve the quality of life for another person. Simply put, you can give two gifts at once with a Foundation donation.

Donation envelopes are available through your district Trustees or by contacting the Lions of Michigan Foundation at 517 887-6640, ext. 10. You may also copy the form below. In fact, you may want to make several copies to have on hand. Mail your check and the completed form to the Lions of Michigan Foundation, 5730 Executive Drive, Lansing, MI 48911.

PROJECT KIDSIGHT SCREENS1,000th PRESCHOOLER

By PDG Jenny Ware

Back in July, Lion Bruce LaBelle of the Bark River LionsClub screened the 1,000th preschooler during a screeningheld at the Heart of the North Lions Club Annual FleaMarket Days at the Bark River International Racewayin Bark River!! This feat came as no easy task over thelast two and half years of screenings!

In 2005, funded by a Core 4 Grant from LCIF sevenLions, consisting of members from the Munising, DaysRiver Area, Manistique, and Newberry Lions Clubs, attended the first training for Project Kidsight. This traininggave them the knowledge and the MTI photo screenercamera to move forward and start screening children, aged 1-5 years of age, for potential vision acuityproblems. The trained Lions took hold of this MTI photoscreener camera and set out to help assist the local healthdepartments and do visual screenings for preschoolers. This program promised to be both exciting and rewarding.During that first year less than 200 children were screenedin Marquette, Alger and Delta counties.

Over the last two and a half years trainings have spannedour great District from Bessemer to Drummond Island andfrom Marquette to Wells. With this increase in training wehave also seen a great increase in the number of screeningsbeing held and the number of children being screened!

This past year was not only a milestone in the number ofpreschool children screened but it was also a milestone forthe number of Lions Clubs who got involved with thisproject. 23 clubs sponsored 24 screenings that resulted in502 preshool aged children being screened. Of these, 18referrals were made for further testing of possible visualproblems such as farsightedness, nearsightedness and lazyeye. These 23 clubs gave a grand total of $5,876 tosupport the screenings and the administrative cost it takesfor someone to assist with the paperwork at the Stateoffice of Project Kidsight!

As the Chair for SD10, I would like to thank every Lionthat has been trained to do screenings, that has helped setup a screening, that has helped with paperwork at ascreening, that has given to the project or that hasencouraged someone to bring their preschool aged child/grandchild to a screening!! Without every single Lion’ssupport of this project over the years, we would not havebeen able to CONGRATULATE Lion Bruce on screeningour 1,000th preschooler and helping fight childhood visualproblems!!

Youth Exchange

My name is Gary Klopand I am the YouthExchange Chairman forour District. I have someapplications for youths thatwant to come to the USAfor the program. If anyoneis interested in hosting anexchange student, pleasecontact me at (906) 647-3232. This current list ofstudents is for the winter

months. Also, I am available to visit any club that may beinterested in information on the program. I can give a 15-30 minute presentation on both sending youths or receivingthem for the program and what is expected from eachclub. Thank you for your time.

For many young people, participating in the Lions YouthExchange Program is a life-changing experience. Travelingto another country, living with a host family, participating ina camp and experiencing another culture are milestoneevents.

Unlike other exchange programs, the Lions InternationalYouth Exchange Program is not conducted for tourism, education or employment. Instead, it is a unique culturallearning opportunity.

Exchanges can be arranged in any of the more than 190countries in which Lions clubs exist. Most exchanges lastbetween four and six weeks and the participant (ages 15-21) stays with one or more host families during theexchange. Participants experience life as part of their hostfamily.

Northwood’s AirLifelineBy PDG George Kelly

Northwood’s Air Lifeline has completed over 2500 fightswith patients to hospitals throughout the Midwest fromairports near their homes at no cost to the patients. Thisfree service started in 1989 when our founder Lion BobLarson started this program using his own aircraft. At thattime, he asked the Multiple District 10 Lions Clubs to helpout by supporting the free service with the cost of theaviation fuel. At the MD10 conventions, the Lionsunanimously voted to support Lions Bob Larson’s vision.

This past September, our pilots had 17 flights scheduledcompleting 15 fights and re-scheduling the other two forOctober. One of the fights was for an emergency hearttransplant.

Ten years ago, the Lions Clubs of the Upper Peninsulabuilt an all weather hanger in Iron Mountain, Michigan witha matching grant from the Lions Clubs InternationalFoundation. This enabled the pilots to keep their aircraftinside a warm hanger thus eliminating the need andexpense of de-icing prior to a scheduled flight in the harshwinters.

Five years ago with the help from the LutheranBrotherhood over $500,000 was raised to purchase ourown aircrafts, a Synca III twin engine and a BeachBonaza. This enabled the program to have two additionalaircraft on standby as well as having the pilot’s personnelaircraft when needed. We currently have eight pilots thatare qualified to fly the missions with the aircraft in theNWALL’s hangers.

The chief pilot Bruce Rutter handles the scheduling of themissions and contacting the patients for the fights.

All of the Lions and Lioness Clubs in Single District 10should have an appointed NWALL coordinator. This Lionmember will serve as the contact between the NWALLProgram and the patients needing this service in theirareas. If your Club has not appointed a coordinator pleasedo so and send the contact information to PDG GeorgeKelly, SD10 Chairman. The club then needs to informtheir respectful communities of this free service and thecontact person within the local Lions Club. This is a greatPublic Relations tool for the Lions organization.

We are presently waiting for new props for the Synca IIIand new GPS navigational aids for the aircraft. Thisequipment is very expensive, costing approximately$5,000 per aircraft.

Last year, I called all the Lions Clubs in Single District 10asking if they could give additional funds to help offset therapidly rising cost of the fuel. About 80% of the Clubsresponded to the request. My many thanks to all of the LionsClubs that have stepped forward and assisted in helpingNWALL meet the needs of transport. I know there is a greatdemand on our Lions Clubs for support from all parts of ourDistrict and communities. For those that did not support theprogram last year, would you please reconsider a donation tothis worthwhile program this year. I will once again be callingeach of the Lions Clubs of our District for continual assistancetowards the cost of the free service. Please help support thisprogram, every little bit helps.

It’s time to start thinking about the InternationalConvention next year. As I already mentioned it will be inMinneapolis, MN and we have our own PDG SaraDoubledee running for International Director. Seeing it isnot so far to journey it would be great to have a big groupfrom SD10 there to support Sara. The Michigandelegation has its headquarters hotel assignment for theConvention at the Ramada Mall of America inBloomington. It is 10 miles from the convention center, and the room rate is $119.00 per night plus tax. The hotelis 3 blocks from Mall of America and 2 miles from theairport. It has 248 guest rooms, free parking, complimentary high speed wireless internet, indoor andoutdoor pools and a fitness room. They have shuttles toMall of America and the airport and access to light railtrain stations serving downtown Minneapolis. An onlineregistration form is available on Lions International’swebsite.

My next newsletter will include information on the SD10convention held here on Drummond Island April 30-May3, 2009. We have lots of things planned so stay tuned. Stephenson Lions Club Pasty BakeBy Roger Freis & Don Wojakowski

For twenty plus years the Stephenson Lions Club hasbeen making pasties. In these years many changes havebeen made. The first year only the Lions worked withhand rolling the dough and hand mixing the meat mixture. The potatoes were peeled, cut and diced the night beforeby hand. After that we recruited some of our spouses. Therolling of the dough was a bit much for the men. Each yearthere have been improvements, such as a potato peeler, dicer and dough rollers were purchased to increase theproduction and reduce the amount of time required tocomplete the task at hand. For the past 18 years we havebeen able to use the Stephenson High School kitchen, which means that we are able to use the big mixers for themeat and for mixing the dough. The pasties are partiallybaked in the school’s two convection ovens that hold 12trays each with 288 pasties being baked per hour.

The day starts with two men and two pick-ups picking upthe groceries at 6:30 AM. Then the work begins with thecutting, peeling and dicing of the potatoes, onions andrutabagas in one room while the meat mixture and dough isstarting to be mixed in another room. When this is doneand enough is made, that is when the filling and crimpingstarts. After the pasties are baked for 30 minutes, they arecooled, wrapped and package for distribution.

Getting to be a little short handed at times, the StephensonLions Club joined forces with the “River City Chorus”, adivision of the Menominee Sweet Adelins. They providedexcellent workers and received half of the pasties inexchange for their help. This went on for a couple of yearsand then we changed the event to two different weeks, one week for Sweet Adelins Club and one for the LionsClub producing 1000 pasties per weekend. It did not takevery long when it was decided to do a double dose anddo the complete operation in one day. The result of this

Vice District Don Wojakowski of the Stephenson LionsClub has the job of dicing up the potatoes, onions andrubabagas using the Clubs dicing machine.

Lion Rogar Freis has the job of baking the 2150 pastiesthat were made this day.

has been great! We now produce 2000 plus pasties twicea year, with ½ going to each organization. The last fewyears, school groups that been supported by the LionsClubs have had students participate in the process.

Along with this event and other club fundraisers, theStephenson Lions Club has been able to donate over$15,000 to various Lions Projects and local organizations.
