Chapter Presidents

WE L C O M E

Welcome members of the Central and Northern California chapters of WESTOP to our Annual Professional Development Seminar. It is with extreme excitement that we welcome you to our collaborative PDS. It is our greatest hope that this collaborative environment offers you greater variety and richness, as well as expanded networking opportunities. Thank you to our co-chairs and committee members for their hard work and dedication in putting on such an extensive event. As we continue to face the challenges of being TRIO, there is no greater time to ask questions, tell your story, and get involved with the community of like-minded individuals in our TRIO family. And, PDS is just the place to do that. We believe that it is through collaboration and support of each other that we will continue to grow stronger and prosper. We encourage you to reach out to new and seasoned members and discover something new. Our conference is designed to celebrate the many ways in which you, individually and collectively, come together to enrich the lives of our students and families. Thank you all for being here and enjoy your time together!

Sincerely,

Norma Cuevas - CenCal Chapter President Shannon Smith – NorCal Chapter President

Conference Co-Chairs Once a upon a time, last year, we sat next to each other during a WESTOP board meeting, talked about the great accomplishments and challenges within our chapters, which developed into new ideas. After a casual conversation, we were inspired to work together and provide the opportunity to collaborate, and spark up creativity among chapters. Now you are a part of that conversation. Magical. Do you know the meaning behind the work that you do? Do you come to work and follow the same process that has been used in the last ten years? How many TRiO colleagues do you call when you need help at work? These are the questions that resulted in our PDS collaboration. Sometimes we just need to provide the time and place to have others join the conversation where we can build a community, and collaborate creatively. We are excited to bring both chapters together, both during the planning and execution of our professional development seminar. Please indulge yourselves with valuable, meaningful, and creative knowledge during your seminar. As we continue to transform the lives of our students and families, consider the following tips for being a professional: Be confident. Ask Questions. Don’t comprise what you believe in. Don’t take the shortcuts. Face the brutal facts. Appreciate efforts, but only reward results. Stay Humble, Be Passionate. With Humbling Gratitude, Martha Escalera & Caren Fernandez PDS Co-Chairs

Workshop I 9:45 am – 11:00 am

Topic: New Members Meeting Laguna Grande E Room Presenters: Bernardo Reynoso & Latoya Thompson Audience: New Members This workshop session will give New Members an orientation of the WESTOP Central & Northern California Chapters goal and purpose. Workshop participants will learn how they can benefit from their involvement. Members will learn about the importance of being involved at the chapter level and the purpose of the chapter activities and events. New members should attend this session, as it is the “New Members Orientation.” Returning members are encouraged to attend if you would like a refresher on the benefits of WESTOP.

Topic: Common Unity: Process of Creating a Community Del Monte Room

Presenter: Robert Hernandez Audience: All

This workshop presents community building as a group process. We will examine the importance of creating community in order to work effectively together, achieve greater results, and the value of the individual as a contributor to a greater good. We will explore the fundamentals, principles, essential tools and strategies to help our work groups to connect, develop possibilities, and create thriving environments of acceptance, appreciation of diversity, and nurturance of personal growth, healing, and self-discovery for wholesomeness.

Topic: Challenges Facing First-Generation, Latino Students: Assessing the TRiO Response El Camino Room Presenter: Arash Daneshzadeh Audience: All Latino students in California are underrepresented in almost every statistical category that measures academic success. First-generation students, whose parents lack college degrees, are adversely affected by not having academic mentors who were familiar with the college-admission process. TRiO programs are charged with shepherding low-income, first-generation students through high school with the ultimate ambition of graduation from college or university. This study addressed the following questions: How does a student’s first-generation college-bound status contribute to the threat of self-imposed stereotyping? Do college equity programs like Upward Bound (UB) and Educational Talent Search (ETS) have mechanisms in place to account for the challenges faced by first-generation students. Major findings of this study indicate that first-generation students face a variety of challenges that influence their sense of preparation for the college-admission process. These challenges demonstrate a relationship between expectations and behaviors.

Topic: What CenCal/NorCal Should Know About Test Prep Del Mar Room

Presenter: Ben Yarin Audience: ETS/UB/UBMS

This workshop helps program staff understand how high school students should prepare to succeed on standardized tests. We will discuss motivating students by connecting exams like the SAT and ACT to their futures. We will outline test prep plans specific to underserved students at each grade level and demystify these intimidating tests! Finally a resource that empowers YOU to help your students build confidence on these exams without being a “test prep expert!”

Workshop II 11:15 am – 12:30 pm

Topic: Connecting the Dots El Camino Room Presenter: Alvin Phillips Audience: All The Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) has served the TRIO Community for over 30 years! As we reach this milestone, we reflect on 30 years of advocating for the rights of low-income first-generation and disabled students, and ask ourselves “What is the future of TRIO programs in an uncertain world??” Come to this session to learn how COE works with Congress to get additional funding which translates to more dollars for your projects.

Topic: Advisor Advising Program: Using Data to Graduate Our Students Del Mar Room

Presenter: Thang Ho Audience: All

This session will display the Advisor Advising System that is being used at CSU, Chico. We will showcase how we use the current program and the data to retain and graduate our students. From there, we will run through the future enhancements of the advising program and how we will continue to proactively help identify struggling students, customize our advising and increase our six year graduation rate.

Topic: Navigating the Holistic Admission Process for First-Generation Students of Color Laguna Grande E Room Presenter: Arash Daneshzadeh Audience: All This case study addresses racial justice by providing youth development educators with mock application scenarios which examine typical issues facing many under-represented and underserved students of color aspiring for post-secondary education--as they relate to admission outcomes. Among the issues integrated into the proposed case study applications are: discipline, stereotype threat, absentee fathers, private vs. public schools, test scores vs. GPA, achievement versus learning, academic rigor, essay writing, procuring letters of recommendation, immigration status (e.g., AB540 students), etc. My goal is to provide a panoramic glimpse into the undergraduate selection process germane to most selective liberal arts colleges.

Topic: Keeping the Balance in Professional Development and Home Del Monte Room

Presenters: Omar Murillo/Joy Brittain Audience: All

This workshop will aim to answer the following questions: How do we go about professional development in education without losing ourselves? How can we gain support from family members, colleagues and supervisors in order to engage in such endeavors? Objectives: To encourage attendees to engage in professional development opportunities while still maintaining a healthy level of personal, social, and emotional well-being.

WESTOP President- Elect

L U N C H

Agenda 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm Laguna Grande C

Cambridge Educational Services

2:15 pm – 3:30 pm

Topic: Ways to Efficiently Use Data for Measurable Gains and Perpetual Student Achievement Laguna Grande C Presenter: Bobby Oommen Audience: All

WESTOP, President-Elect, Anita Blanco will be updating us on the current issues and trends that are happening in TRiO and in WESTOP. WESTOP President-Elect, Anita Blanco has over 10 years in WESTOP and 7 years on the WESTOP Board of Directors & the Service Council. She was a member of the Arizona Chapter for 3 years and 4 years for the NorCal Chapter. Ms. Blanco received her BA in Art History & Historic Preservation at the age of 19. She received her M.Ed. in Higher Education Policy & Leadership with Distinction from Arizona State University.

Educators who specialize in College Access must be trained to translate student data into alternative instructional strategies. As evidenced in DOE grant competitions, TRIO personnel must find innovative ways to use student data for measurable gains and perpetual achievement (especially in high-stakes assessments like the ACT/SAT and GRE). This presentation explores research-based models to explain how supplemental curriculum and student data is used to obtain mastery of college, graduate and career readiness skills at ALL ABILITY LEVELS.
