Awonke’s racing cardream comes true
Little Awonke (6), who suffers from a lifethreatening condition, loves fast cars. He dreamt ofdriving in a fast car as well as having his own“racing” car to drive in at home. Racing champion, Michael Stephen, a longstanding friend of theReach for a Dream Foundation in Port Elizabethand the team from Terry Moss Racing, madeAwonke’s dream come to life at the Aldo Scribante race track on June 30. When this spirited littleboy saw the black Engen Extreme Audi, his facelit up. And it lit up even more when he sawanother (little) racing car standing on the track. He could not believe that it was his when Michaelannounced that he will be “racing” in his own caragainst the Audi – albeit at a speed of 5km perhour. He “beat” the seasoned racing champs andwas awarded a trophy and the number 1 spot onthe podium. Pictured are Michael Stephen (left),little Awonke and Simon Moss.

WHILE the embattled Bayworldcomplex has received thelong-awaited news that partsof it will finally be run by theNelson Mandela Bay Munici-
pality, after years of battling through red tapeto achieve this, Friends of Bayworld are alsorallying their efforts to keep it afloat.
Thegroup, which is dedicated to supportingthe facility, is hard at work planning anotherof their successful Night at the Museumevents which will be held on July 23.According to Friends of Bayworld repre-
sentative, Anelle Bailey, they started the
Night at the Museum campaign, of which thethird edition will be held this year, with a Fa-cebook event page.“We expected maybe 200 to 500 people to
show up (for the first one). By 7pm, we hadto close the doors as the buildings were filledto capacity. About 1 500 people attended,” shesaid. The first event was restricted to the Muse-
um and Snake Park only and last year, theyexpanded it to include the entire Bayworldcomplex.More good news for the complex is the an-
nouncement on Friday that the Eastern CapeDepartment of Sport,Arts, Culture andRecre-ation and the municipality have signed a ser-vice level agreement for the upgrading of the
complex.MEC of the department, Pemmy Majodina,
said the provincial legislature has approvedthat the recreation and oceanarium part ofBayworld be run by the municipality forproject management and redevelopment pur-poses.This means that the project to redevelop
Bayworldwill be handled by theMandelaBayDevelopment Agency (MBDA).Pierre Voges, CEO of the MBDA, said the
upgrade will cost about R300 million. “We donot have the money yet, but we will find it,”Voges said.According to Voges, Dorelle Sapere, who is
the Planning and Development Manager atMBDA, will convene a group of experts to in-
vestigate whether Bayworld will be a touristattraction or research and educational facili-ty, or both of these.
Night at the MuseumThe Night at theMuseum event was born out
of the idea of creating a fun affordable event forthe whole family. This year the event, in its third year, will in-

AN electronic waste recycling start-up, basedin the Propella Business Incubator, aims tobe one of the first companies on the continentto fully recycle electronic waste.
Propella is a partnership between the Nel-sonMandelaMetropolitan University, the In-dustrial Development Corporation and theprivate sector and is focused ongenerating re-newable energy.“Should we receive our required funding
we will be the first electronic waste plant inAfrica to have an end-to-end zero-to-landfillfacility,” says Enrico Vermaak of eWasteTechnologies Africa.“Electronic waste” is defined as “anything
with a plug” being thrown away, such as dis-carded computers, office electronic equip-ment, entertainment device electronics, mo-bile phones, television sets and refrigerators.According to theminister of environmental
affairs, Edna Molewa, electronic waste makesup five to eight percent ofmunicipal solidwastein South Africa and is growing at a rate threetimes faster than any other form of waste.eWaste Technologies Africa moved into the
Propella advancedmanufacturing hub inApril2016.“Being housed in Propella has given us the
opportunity to have our warehouse, researchand development facilities and office space alllocated in one building, which is amassive ben-efit to us,” he says.Seeing the gap in the market for what the
minister identified as a lack of recycling infra-structure, eWaste Technologies Africa was setup to dispose of electronic waste.“We have secured Research and Develop-
ment funding that has allowedus to procure en-try-level electronic waste recycling equip-ment, and (we) areworkingwithworld leadersin the field of electronic waste recycling, aswell as chemical engineering and process con-sultants, to establish a one-of-a-kind facility in
Port Elizabeth,” he says.Vermaak, who has been involved in the
Information and Communication Technolo-gy (ICT) industry for more than 15 years, says the company specialises in the disposalof ICT equipment “in a green and compliantmanner”.Value-added services include on-site data
destruction, data sanitation and asset man-agement. The company currently has fourfull-time employees, and sees potential formore job creation as it grows.
. The company operates from PropellaBusiness Incubator in the Humerail Busi-ness Park in Oakworth Drive. For info con-tact Enrico at 083 644 6962.

CRIMEhas dropped by an incredible 80 percentin just fourmonths inParson’sRidge, oneofPEsnewest residential suburbs.
That’s according to JenniferDeyzel, chairper-sonof theParson’sRidgePatrols (PRP), aNeigh-bourhoodWatch-basedorganisationformedear-lier this year to combat housebreakings andthefts from vehicles in the area.A significant portion of its funding comes
fromanunusualsource: PortElizabethdevelop-ment company, Cohen Property Developments, which built most of the homes in the suburb.Asked by the local community for his assist-
ance in establishing a local NeighbourhoodWatch to combat crime, Cohen Property Devel-opments MD Aaron Cohen’s response was sim-ply to ask what they needed, said Deyzel.“Hethenwentaheadandprovideduswithsig-
nage, vests and caps, reflectors, torches and self-defence equipment all vital to the success of thePRP, which has grown from 12 to 32 patrollerssince its inception.”Cohen, alongwith his brother, fellow director
Stanley Cohen, says their interest in an arealasts beyond the sales. “The company, whichbuilt the first home in Parson’s Ridge and stillowns it, is committed to protecting their buyers’
long-term investments,” he says.Originallya farm,Parson’sRidgehasbeendi-
vided into 400 residential stands, 200 of whichwere bought and developed by Cohen PropertyDevelopments. The community works with theKabegaParkPolice Station to “keep thebad ele-ments out and the good ones in,” says Deyzel. There’s no doubt that the Parson’s Ridge
NeighbourhoodWatch is working, agrees War-rant Officer Egmond Potgieter of Kabega ParkSAPS. “Housebreaking and theft out of motorvehicles are always a problembutwith thehelpof the PRP which reports anything suspiciousto us immediately, crime in this area is undercontrol. The Neighbourhood Watch membersare our eyes and ears.”The PRP works closely with Sector Com-
manderConstablePaulDisenyane,meetingreg-ularlywith him to discuss crime-related issues.“The commitment and positive attitude of the
Parson’s Ridge NHW are the contributing fac-tors to their success,” says W/O Potgieter.“Patrols with marked NHW clothes and sig-
nagehelp fromavisibilitypointofview,butpeo-ple in their homes canalso play a big role in pre-venting crime, by checking their neighbours’houses, knowing each other’s phone numbers, arrangingwith neighbours to check your housewhen you are away, and phoning your neigh-bours if you notice anything suspicious,” he
adds.Deyzel says the PRP focuses on three key are-
as, namely visible patrolling, educating resi-dents on security and safety, and reportingcrimes or suspicious activities to the police.“We’re not a vigilante group but rather a
group of community-oriented residents whogive of our timeandmoney to keep our area andour homes safe,” she explains.Formed with a legally binding constitution,
the PRP is a non-profit organisation that holds
monthlymeetingswithmembers, patrollersandthe local SAPS and sends out a quarterly news-letter to residents. As a result of the success of the PRP, Cohen
says they have decided to sponsor Neighbour-hood Watches in every suburb they develop inorder to leave a lasting legacy for residents. These include Pinelands near Lorraine, wherethey’re currently building 140 units, Fairview -250 units, Mt Pleasant - 274 units and KammaHeights -10 units.

The driver, a 31-year-oldman and 26-year-oldpassengerwerearrestedonthescene.Althoughno firearm was found in their possession, thepassenger had a knife in his possession.
AccordingtoBeetgethepossibilityexists thatthe twoallegedhijackers are part of a syndicate
that has hijacked VW Polos in Port Elizabethand Uitenhage in the last few months.“Thepossibility isbeingconsidered,especial-
ly since they were caught with a hijacked VWPolo.”This model has been the target of hijackers
the last fewmonths. A reliable police source re-vealed thatPolos arepopularwithhijackers be-cause there are somany of these cars on the ro-ad and they can easily be sold.On Friday morning yet another Polo was hi-

WHAT do an advocate, a music teacher, bag-pipes, theUKandwalking shoes have in com-mon?
That’s an easy question for the Animal An-ti-Cruelty League (AACL) to answer - Bever-ley and Patrick Scott. On July 3, they set out on the South Downs
Way, a long distance footpath in SouthernEngland, leavingWinchester and arriving inEastbourne on July 11, having covered160km.They combine their love of walking with
raising funds for the Animal Antic-CrueltyLeague Spayathon fund.Thiswill be their 6thwalk for the causeand
to date they have already walked 1 181 km.When they complete the South Downs
Way, they will have covered 1 341 km in total– which is more than the 1 272 km from Dur-ban to Cape Town.Their trips include daily updates on their
Facebook page,Walking for Paws and Claws, some light-hearted banter, and the increas-ingly popular Pub Challenge, which ac-counts for the bulk of the donations.Beverly and Patrick sponsor R10 to the
cause at every pub they visit along the wayand challenge any willing participants to dothe same.According to Linda-Louise Swain of the
AACL, their walks generally raise anythingbetween R12 000 and R25 000 and have beenresponsible for hundreds of sterilisations -ending the abuse and neglect of over-breed-ing for so many animals. Some of their trips get more interesting
than others.“Their trip down the DalesWay, a long dis-
tance footpath in Northern England, in 2013saw them lost on the moors when the rollingmist came in.“Last year the Thames Path had Beverley
ending up in a ditch with an injured ankle,
after a passing cyclist sent her sprawling onthe narrow path,” said Linda-Louise.However,many friends and brief acquaint-
ances are made along the way and they aredoing what they love for a cause that is closeto their heart.Their walks coincide with visits to their
children in London.Their son, William, passed away in Febru-
ary and thiswalkwill be done inhismemory.According to Linda-Louise, Beverley and
Patrick cover all their own costs and everycent made goes directly into the AACL out-reach account.“We ask the public to please get involved,
join or “Like” the Walking for Paws andClaws Facebook page and become part ofmaking a difference. The cost of a sterilisa-tion at one of our Spayathons is R250. Anydonations are greatly appreciated and thePub Challenge is a really fun way of joiningin on their daily escapades,” said Linda-Lou-ise.
Scotts hit the roadagain
Beverly and Patrick Scott will be Walking forPaws and Claws for the sixth time on July 3.

WHILE interior and exterior paints have manyof the sameproperties, theyalsohave somedif-ferences.
For best results, it’s important to choose thecorrect paint for the intended purpose. A qualityinterior paint will have a low VOC level, whichreduces odour when painting indoors. Wherepaint for the interior needs to be hard-wearingand washable, exterior paints must withstanddamaging UV rays and be flexible to bridgecracks, be fungal resistant and have low dirt re-tention.It’s equally important to choose a superior
quality of paint; it makes painting easier and en-sures a long-lasting result. TheProminentPaintsPremium range has a lifespan of up to 12 yearswhen properly applied. The paints are tough, du-rable, washable, UV-resistant and they can betinted to any colour of your choice; this rangeticks all the right boxeswhen it comes to quality. But even thebestpaintwon’tperform if thebasicprinciples of painting are not followed:
Pay attention to surface preparation) Follow the back of pack requirements for
the substrate before applying paint.
) Always sand and prepare surfaces properlybefore painting – it could be the difference be-tween success and a DIY disaster.
) Choosing the correct primer for the sub-strate is equally important: a universal under-coat does not perform well on newly plasteredwalls, but is good for primed steel as an interme-diate coat. Prominent Select Plaster Primer is analkali-resistant, solvent-based primer for cementplaster, rhinolite surfaces, gypsum plaster andboard.
) Walls must also be clean and dry beforepainting begins.
Choose the right finish for your roomWith the number of finishes available today,
thechoicecanbeasdifficultaschoosingacolourbut for a strong finish you need the right finish.A good rule of thumb is to first consider the areabeing painted.Matt paints provide a smooth, yet stylish fin-
ish, hiding blemishes on the wall surface. Both Premium Eggshell and Premium Non-
Drip Enamel are easy to clean and have goodstain resistance, while high-gloss paint has avery shiny finish. High traffic areas need a dura-ble paint that resists stains andmarring and can
be scrubbed clean.Semi-gloss paints are suitable for areas with
high condensation like kitchens and bathroomsor children’s playrooms where additional clean-ing will likely be required.
For info see www.prominentpaints.co.za or call thecustomer care line on 0861 77 66 46.

Before I met this powerfulspiritual LADY AMELIAhappiness was rare

It’s okay to stare…so it says on Ford’s websiteunderneath a photo of the newMustang. And ifthere is anything that would always stay withme about test driving the Mustang for 3 days, itwas THE STARES.Stareswhichmuchmore expensive cars have
never elicited while I was test driving them.Until driving theMustang, or should I say rid-
ing, I did not realize how many car enthusiaststhere are – no matter what the demographic –who stared at the Mustang. From moms atschool giving me the thumbs up, to paramedicsdriving past in an ambulance applauding, tohawkers staring so much that they forgot to tryto sell me anything. Then therewere the comments: “HeyLady, is
that car not too powerful for you?” Or “It isn’tthe V8?? – that’s a sacrilege!!”And there is sure to be plenty of stares going
around with a whopping 114 FordMustangs be-ing delivered to customers in South Africa inApril alone – and a long list waiting for their de-livery of this iconic car. The demand has beenso overwhelming that as of November last year– a month before officially launching here – itwas sold out through 2017.And this with a price ranging from R699 900
to R899 900.In South Africa there is a six-model line-up
with 2.3 EcoBoost or 5.0 V8 engines, manual orautomatic transmissions, as well as Fastbackand Convertible body styles.Ford says that with the new Mustang, which
is for the first time ever available in right-handdrive, they did not reinvent the iconic car, justmade it better and – 50 years on – have breathednew life into a legend.
ExteriorIt’s a design unlike any other. It has a sleek
and low body and a rather bulky and long hood.At the rear the unique design is accentuated by
the signature tri-bar taillights. And the front issobulky, andvisibility sodifficult, that I didnotdare take it on the narrow course ofmy favour-ite take-away’sdrive-thru.Wehadtopark itandgo and order inside – a small inconvenience forthe fun that this car is to drive. Then there is the Mustang emblem on the
front that leaves you in no doubt as to what carthis is. Sometimes it is the little things that staywith you the longest when test driving a car. With the Mustang it was the shadow of a Mus-tang screened on the pavement when you openthe doors at night. That was probably the fea-ture I showed most people. When you open thedoor at night, a light from the side mirrors cre-ates the figure of the horse on the road or pave-ment underneath the open door – somethingthat has to be seen to be believed.
InteriorThedesignon the insidewas inspiredby clas-
sicairplanecockpitswithabalancebetweenan-alog dials and digital feedback. There is plenty of space in the front, but in the
back one would only be able to fit in small chil-dren or people eager enough to have a ride inthis car nomatter how uncomfortable and tightthe seating in the back – suchasmanyofmycol-leagues at work – who were treated to rides intheMustang. I haveneverhad somanyrequestsfrom colleagues to experience a test car.In contrast to the backseat, the boot space is
actually quite impressive. The front seats are very comfortable and can
be moved forward and backward electrically. The Mustang also boasts the best in infotain-
ment technology with Ford’s Sync 2 with highresolution 8-inch touch screen, Bluetooth andvoice control (with which you can even controlthe temperature). There aremultiple connectivity optionsdeliv-
ered via Bluetooth, USB and SD card ports.
STOPbuttonandyou’reaway(as longas thekeyis in close proximity).TheKey hasMyKey technologywhichmeans
that the key can be programmed to restricteddrivingmodes thatpromotegoodhabits, suchaslimiting vehicle top speed and decreasing audiovolume.
EngineIt is difficult to describe the thrill of starting
the engine and hearing that Mustang’s growl –evenif it isn’t theV8versionthatwastestdriven.The testmodelwas equippedwith the all-new
twin-scroll turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 en-gine. In SouthAfrica theMustang is also availa-ble with a 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 engine.According to Ford’s literature, the Mustang
GT’s 5.0L engine has been expertly engineeredto maximize power from every compression, while the turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost enginegives one exhilarating performance with re-duced fuel consumption.Electric Power Assisted Steering adjusts to
provide one with greater control in a range ofroad and weather conditions, and even cross-winds andpotholes. And it activateswhenneed-
ed, saving fuel. One can choose between three power-assisted
steeringsettings, namelycomfort, sportandnor-mal.Mustang’s SelectShift gives one the choice of
driving it manually with Paddle Shifters on thesteeringwheel to shift gearsupordownwithouthaving to use a clutch.Using the Selectable DriveModes, drivers are
able to adjust theAdvanceTrac electronic stabil-ity control, throttle response, automatic gear-shift patterns and steering to match Normal,Sport+, Track or Snow/Wet settings. While the Mustang V8 is thirsty as far as its
fuel consumption figures goes, the 2.3 EcoBoostengine is much more fuel efficient with con-sumption stated at 8.0 l/100km in the combinedcycle, linked to 179 g/km CO2 emissions.

OVER the course of a Grand Prix weekend adriver normally runs close to two hundred laps. It’s uncanny then that everything can be madeor undone by one lap.OnSaturdayqualifying, awetanddrysession,
LewisHamilton steeredhisMercedes to pole po-sition in dominant fashion. While teammateNi-co Rosberg qualified second on the road hemoved down the grid due to a gearbox penalty.
It promotedForce India’sNicoHulkenberg tothe second front-row starting position of his ca-reer. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, also hit with agearbox penalty and fell down the starting grid, which promoted McLaren’s Jenson Button tothird place. As Hamilton led cleanly from pole position it
didn’t take too long for Hulkenberg and Buttonto fall by thewayside. Ferrari driverKimiRaik-
konen, now in second, kept Hamilton relativelyhonest with a gap of 3.5 to 4 seconds in the firststint. A recovering Sebastian Vettel was soonrunning third behind teammate Raikkonen.Ferrari’s advantage rested on the fact that, as
Hamilton’s closest rival, Raikkonen started therace on the supersoft tyre, which, theoretically, shouldlastlongerthanHamilton’sultrasofttyres. However, for a reason unbeknownst to most,
Ferrari called Raikkonen in only one lap afterHamilton’s own visit to the pitlane. It droppedthe Finn to sixth behind both Red Bull drivers.Ferrari’s strategists, not for the first time thisseason, had made the wrong call.AsHamiltonandRaikkonendivedintothepit-
lane it leftVettel in the leadof therace. However,as the German driver started lap 27 he suffereda violent delamination to the right-rear super-
soft tyre. It speared the Ferrari into the pitwalland out of the race. Ferrari do not believe thatthey pushed the tyres beyond their limits andVettel’s laptimes before the incident would sug-gest that the set of tyres were well within work-ing range. After a short safety-car stint to clear up Vet-
tel’s tyredebris,Rosberg resumed the leadof therace on lap 32 with Hamilton in second. After both Merc drivers made their second
stopsNicoRosbergwas delivering a drive at theAustrian Grand Prix worth remembering. Hefought his way through to the lead of the racewith consistent speed and superior strategy. But Hamilton wasn’t giving up and closed the
gap to four-tenths of a second on lap 67. Rosbergseemedunflustered right until the final lap of therace. The German driver made a mistake intoTurn 1 handing Hamilton the advantage. Hamil-
mained fourth overall. As it were, Rosberg’sbrake-by-wiresystemwentintopassivemodeonthe pit-strait. However, it’s clear from on-boardfootage thathewas trying torunHamiltonwide.Behind race-leader Hamilton, Red Bull’s Max

The other star of the after-noon was Manor F1’s Pascal Wehrlein whoscored his first career point in tenth. There is no rest for the sport that never sleeps
as the F1 paddock heads straight to the Silver-stone circuit for this weekend’s British GP.
