ON THE INFINITE LIFE OF PLASTIC STRAWSSingle use plastics and the overarching culture of convenience in the United States have damaging consequences to the environment and our planet.

It’s not just one straw, it never is. Hundreds of thousands of straws are making these journeys every hour, every instant. And more often than not, the waiters at our restaurants and cafes just assume we’ll be needing one. As if we need to be polluting the ocean with plastic spears.

The Ocean Conservancy estimates that single-use plastic straws rank on the top ten list of items picked up on beach clean ups.The plastic used to create plastic straws never fully degrades. It gets smaller and smaller over time, but continues to exist in our atmosphere forever.

to reduce their use of single-use items and make the switch to reusable plastics. Bring reusable bags to the grocery store, decline straws when offered at restaurants, invest in a reusable water bottle, and always reuse when possible.

This summer, we challenge our readers

SPOTLIGHT ON Kindness

Golden West strives to create Oceans of Opportunity for students through a culture of inclusivity, opportunity and equitability. The EOPS program, food pantry, and the recent addition of ‘The Rack’, which provides professional interview clothing forstudents, exemplify the best characteristics represented at GWC and the benefits ofkindness.

The EOPS program offers economically disadvantaged students special support services such as specialized counseling, transfer assistance, priority registration, parking passes and assistance buying textbooks. Rocio , a full-time student workingtwo jobs, found out about EOPS this semester through classroom outreach and immediately knew how beneficial the services could be for her. I asked Rocio how EOPS has impacted her experience at Golden West.

Getting to know The Rack and The Stand, GWC’s newest EOPS programs - from the students’ perspectives

“It feels great to be a part of a program in school and to be involved, especially with one that cares so much about the students success! They have provided me with so much help and it has relieved some of the stress as a college student. They have made it feel like its possible to graduate,” said Rocio. Since joining EOPS, Rocio has been able to enroll in full time classes next semester and expects to be finishing this semester on the Honor Roll.

The food pantry, known as ‘The Stand’, and ‘The Rack’ have also been greatadditions to the GWC campus this semester, and are available to all students with a current student ID. Mayra , a GWC student who works at The Stand, said her experience there has changed her perception of who uses the services, saying that students of all backgrounds are represented and love the accessibility of the program. Jose , a full-time GWC student, says he pops in from time to time when he has an especially long day on campus, and loves how inclusive the space is.

Visionaries of the Project: (Left to Right) Claudia Lee, VP of Student Services and Dr. Susana Castellanos-Gaona, Student Success and Support Program (SSSP)

The Rack and The Stand are located across from the new Student Services building. Donations are accepted any time during operation hours. To find out more about EOPS and its programs, visit www.goldenwestcollege.edu/student-equity/.
