- Marketing Strategy and Messaging for 2014

3 The ProjectIn the fall of 2012, the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario (ACBO) issued the RFP for the core religion course Pearson won the RFP based on the strength of our past work, the Bishops confidence in the process that had been established during the development of Fully Alive, our superior digital development capacity, and the approach we took in our proposal that placed the Bishops clearly in a position of content authority.

An agreement was made between Pearson and the ACBO to appoint Pearson as the developer, with the Bishops in a content approval position.

The MarketLCDSB Resource Review l 03/31/20135 The Place of Religion in Catholic SchoolsWhile the place of Catholic education in Canada is theoretically protected, recent changes to systems in Quebec and Newfoundland have demonstrated that political and economic change can result in the amalgamation of public and Catholic schools. As a result, Catholic districts continually look for ways to demonstrate both that their level of achievement is as high as other districts, and also that the faith-based environment they offer benefits learners. One of the ways they do so is through the delivery of unique programs such as Catholic Family Life and Religious Education. Religious Education is not only a class that is taught for one hour, four days per week, it is embedded throughout the fabric of the school. Catholic schools have a dual mandate: the delivery of Ministry of Education curriculum within a Catholic faith milieu.

The Market (cont.)An agreement is in place between the Ontario Bishops and the Bishops in Alberta and Saskatchewan that they will adopt the Ontario Religion curriculum 100% and the resources that are developed in support of it.

We therefore have exclusive access to 100% of the Grades 1-8 religion market in Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, with a total student enrolment of 445,352 students (55,669 students per grade). This represents 30% of the total Gr 1 8 market in those three provinces and 22% of the total national Gr 1 8 market.LCDSB Resource Review l 03/31/20136 Market Share and Sales Potential

The publicly-funded Religion market in Canada is located in the provinces of Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. We are assuming an 85% market share based on the following factors:no competitionage of current resources (20 30 years)importance of Religious Education in the Catholic systemcomparables - Fully Alive, the Bishops Family Life program has achieved a 95% market share

Total Gr. 1 Enrolments (ON, AB, SK) = 55669 Lifetime Revenue: $4,481,882First Year Revenue: $453,213

Instructional ApproachStudent Books and Big Books for whole class instruction and shared reading.

-The Story approach in the early grades supports integration with literacy. It follows the Catholic story-telling approach as seen in the parables, images (stained glass, statues, paintings) used to teach the pre-literate and those with limited literacy.

Teacher Edition and Comprehensive Digital Support Package

-Teachers unfamiliar/uncomfortable with religion content-TE support must be comprehensive-Use literacy strategies they are familiar with and have been proven effective-Promote religious literacy-Provides PD in advance of the program (short video clips on the general program philosophy)

LCDSB Resource Review l 03/31/201313 The Religion Curriculum and Content GoalsThe goals of the new 1-8 curriculum include content goals as well as goals for the broader community. To summarize them here:

Goal to increase the content knowledge of students of the bible Goal to increase the capacity of teachers to deliver a strong program for students; make them more knowledgeable in the content areaGoal to increase interaction between school and home, and in particular between children and their parents

To describe the above goals another way, the Bishops would like to improve the Religion Knowledge across the community, and also enhance the presence of religious dialogue in the home.
