PEATLANDS RESTORATION INFORMATION AND MONITORING SYSTEM MONITOR RESTORATION PROGRESS AND THE STATE OF PEATLANDS IN BRG’S PRIORITY PROVINCES

BRG is mandated to restore degraded peatlands in 7 priority provinces:

WHAT IS PRIMS?PRIMS, Peatlands Restoration Information and Monitoring System, is an online platform that provides data and most recent progress of restoration in BRG priority provinces. The platform also enables users to monitor restoration activities. National and sub-national government, subnational peatland restoration team, restoration implementation actors, local CSOs, and private sector can access information on restoration planning and implementation, monitor restoration areas, monitor hotspots in peatlands, identify land clearing in restoration targeted areas, and report their restoration activities.

WHY PRIMS?TO TRACK RESTORATION PROGRESS BY MULTIPLE STAKEHOLDERS IN 7 PRIORITY PROVINCES Restoration activities such as rewetting, revegetation and revitalization are conducted by multiple stakeholders, including the national and sub-national government, private sectors, CSOs and local community. Such intervention is critical to manage peatland’s hydrological condition as a way to mitigate peatlands degradation and peat fires. The platform enables the BRG to monitor restoration implementation progress to identify interventions that require improvements as well as to coordinate with the stakeholders to ensure that such progress is made consistently.

TO DETECT LAND CLEARING ON PEATLANDS BRG can identify land clearing in targeted peat restoration area, the opening of new canals in peat, and hotspots in peat areas. Thus, the BRG and related ministries will be able to take actions in protecting and managing peatlands.

TO MEASURE RESTORATION IMPACTIndicators for peatlands monitoring for climate impact are: vegetation cover and change through optical satellites; peatlands hotspots observation; ground water level or subsidence rate through field measurements; as well as soil moisture and subsidence rates utilizing radar satellites.

MONITORINGAsessing impact of restoration to support continous learning for achieving target and commitment.

PROGRESSProviding implementation report of restoration to trigger online monitoring platform in other sectors.

TRANSPARANCY Delivering implementation progress, including its regular monitoring

DATA SHARINGImproving trust from all stakeholders and boosting related investment

Restoration Activities, displaying locations of restoration planning and implementation, as well as Peat Care Village (Desa Peduli Gambut).

WHAT ARE THE KEY FEATURES?

Peatlands Degradation Indication, monitoring hotspots in peatlands and quickly identify land clearing on restoration targeted areas to inform BRG and other ministries to take actions for peat protection effort.

Note: Data sources: 1) Peat Hydrological Unit: Ministry of Environment and Forestry, 2017; 2) Peatlands, Ministry of Agriculture, 2011; 3) Forest Cover, derived from Ministry of Environment and Forestry land cover map, 2017; and 4) Peatlands Ecosystem Functions, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, 2017.

Impacts of Peatlands Restoration, displaying impact of restoration implementation to the reduction of hotspots and the increase of ground water level (will be available in mid-2019) in peatlands to inform public on the effectiveness of canal blocking and Peat Care Village activities.

Peat Hydrological Unit (KHG)-Based Quick Analysis, displays a summary indication of peat degradation such as hotspots and land clearing, as well as the progress of restoration in certain KHG. This information can be used by BRG and local government to monitor the condition of peatlands around the area and other prioritized KHGs for restoration implementation.melindungi gambut.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM PRIMS?

National and sub-national government, peat restoration regional team,

restoration actors, local CSOs, and private sectors can access information on restoration and implementation, as

well as monitor restoration areas.

BRG and related ministries will be able to identify where clearing in intact

peat forest happening, the opening of new peat canals, and hot spots. Further, government can take

immediate actions to the perpetrators.

Companies can identify whether their areas belong to

the protected or utilization peat function, and subsequently can develop correct management

and restoration plan.

Local CSOs can help BRG monitor restoration

activities on the ground.

Public can help monitorclearing in peat forest

and hot spot, then report itto related ministries and

law enforcement.

Dashboard, provide summary of restoration implementation progress and to give an overview of hotspots as well as clearing in peat forest.

Peatlands emission estimation, greenhouse gas emission reduction and carbon balance benefits can be achieved through peatland conservation, rewetting and revegetation. The work done to inform and involve Peat Care Villages will also help reduce the frequency and area of fires. (AVAILABLE END OF 2019)

Number of hotspots in 7 (seven) BRG provinces. Hotspot data source: MODIS FIRMS and VIIRS, NASA accessed via Indonesia’s National Aeronautics and Space Agency.

Note: Shows planned and implemented peatlands restoration activities related to the 3R’s: rewetting, revegetation, and revitalization. The data show accumulation of restoration activities from the previous year to year chosen. For example, restoration activities 2017 means data from 2016 to 2017.
