The Effect of pedagogical Agents' Instructional Roles on Learners with Different Ability Levels: A Measure on Learners'

Achievement and Intrinsic Motivation

This article is about effect of different instructional roles of This article is about effect of different instructional roles of

pedagogical agent towards the achievement and intrinsic pedagogical agent towards the achievement and intrinsic

motivation of learners with different ability levels. Learning motivation of learners with different ability levels. Learning

• designed to facilitate and support human learning, done by interacting with learners in an interactive computer - mediated learning environment.

serves as a cognitive and communicative tool with lots of information.

Carries the role of cognitive tool, learning companion and as mentor.

Pedagogical Agents :

• The Expert are master in specific area, skill or have extensive knowledge, confident, stable in performance, firm in emotion by internal and external conditions, development of expertise and requires years of practice.

The Mentors are experienced, trusted advisor guidance provider between the current and desired skill levels. the people who will demonstrate to competence to the learners to competence to the learners.people who develop a social relationship to motivate the learners.

The Expert are :

• experienced and trusted advisor

• guidance provider and not just give information to bridge the gab between the current and desired skill levels.

• the people who will demonstrate to competence to the learners.

• people who develop a social relationship to motivate the learners.

The Mentors are :

• each individual perform differently in the computer-mediated learning environment

• multimedia learning is advantage for high -ability learners and vice versa for those low-ability and concrete operational students.

Individual Differences and Computer

Based Instruction.

Investigation carried out to find the effectiveness of instructional roles of the pedagogical agent to optimize the learning outcomes for learners with different ability levels. Design and develop the pedagogical agents with instructional role and integrates the pedagogical agents into a learning management system.

Study 1

Page 8: Pedagogical agents (edit 12.8.2010)

Experiment carried out to examine the impact of the different pedagogical agents with different ability levels. Variables to be measured are achievement and motivation score.

The purpose of the study is to identify the effective instructional role of the pedagogical agent which can optimize learning in multimedia learning environment.

Learners who used the mentor agent perform better compare to expert-agent in the achievement score.

High-ability learners shows no difference in the achievement score when Mentor and Expert-Agent are being used. Low-ability learner shows better result with mentor agent than expert agent.

The instructional role doesn't influence the achievement of the high ability learners but it enhance the knowledge constructions of the low-ability learners.

High ability learners performed significantly better compare to low-ability learners when using either expert-agent or mentor- agent

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

Page 11: Pedagogical agents (edit 12.8.2010)

Mentor-agent - learners are better and motivated by words and encouragements in the communication.

High -ability learners show no difference in the mean motivation score in both agents. The instructional role does not influence the high-ability learners on their intrinsic motivation. The performance of low-ability learners is better in mentor than using expert-agent in mean motivation score. Mentor agent boost the low-ability learners to sustain in the learning tasks.

High-ability learners are better in the mean motivation score compared than low-ability learners when using expert-agent.Both ability learners shows equally motivated with the mentor-agent.

CONCLUSION

Learners who used the mentor-agent generally performed better compared to learners who used expert-agent in achievement and mean motivation score.

Mentor-agent doesn't influence on enhance the performance of the high-ability learners, as compared to the expert-agent but benefit the low-ability in boosting the learning outcomes on achievement and intrinsic motivation aspects.

The instructional role of pedagogical agent in a multimedia instruction to be designed and developed as a mentor to benefit more individuals with different ability levels.
