HighlightsProgram Length and Scope

Our one-year, clinical program comprises an extensive clinical experience covering surgical cases, outpatient clinics, hospital consults, emergency center evaluations and didactic sessions.

FacultySix full-time Pediatric Otolaryngology Faculty provide the majority of the training experience. Three Neuro-otologists provide adjuvant otologic experience.

EducationFellows enjoy a structured, didactic program with weekly conferences, formal lectures, and multidisciplinary con-ferences.

Faculty SupervisionOur philosophy is to encourage incremental learning and development of independent, critical thinking skills. Faculty support is always available and required in the operating room by hospital bylaws.

Hospital AffiliationTexas Children’s Hospital (TCH), the largest children’s hospital in the United States.

Case LoadThe large volume of patients seen at TCH provides broad and extensive exposure to pediatric otolaryngology cases. Tertiary care cases include otologic procedures including cochlear implants, airway surgery including laryngotracheal reconstruction and laser surgery of the airway, complex neck masses, and sinus surgery.

Otolaryngology ResidentsBaylor College of Medicine Otolaryngology residents rotate at TCH during their training. In addition to the faculty, the Pediatric Otolaryngology team includes a PGY-2 resident, a PGY-3 resident and our two Pediatric Otolaryngology fellows.

PEDIATRIC OTOLARYNGOLOGY FELLOWSHIP

Our Pediatric Otolaryngology Program was established in 1992 and has been training fellows every since that time. In 1998, our program became one of the first fellowship programs to obtain Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accreditation. We have been continually accredited since that time and are proud to announce that our program has recently undergone a meticulous review and successful re-accreditation.

The Pediatric Otolaryngology service at TCH was responsible for 6717 operating room cases and 7234 outpatient visits last year. Fellows typically log 500- 1000 cases as surgeon or assistant during their year of fellowship. 30%-40% of the cases fellows perform are on neonates, infants and children less than 2 years of age and 30-40% of cases involve medically complex children with an ASA status of 3 or above. In particular, the 138 bed NICU provides our fellows with an extensive experience in congenital and neonatal otolaryngologic disorders. The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit provides fellows with tremendous exposure to patients with many challenging otolaryngolic infections and disorders of the immune and hematologic systems. The Pediatric Pulmonary service cares for a large Cystic Fibrosis population and has an active lung transplantation program which provides ample opportunities for

High Caliber Training

Our program is affiliated with Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH), the largest children’s hospital in the United States. TCH is a large, busy, tertiary care children’s hospital with 458 inpatient beds and opportu-nities to match its size. It has more than 2 million patient encounters a year and, in 2008, logged 248,086 outpatient visits, (including the Health Centers), 84,867 ER visits and 21,910 admissions. This patient volume provides an extensive variety of high quality consultations.

Facilities include the Gordon Emergency Center, 22 pediatric surgery suites, a 31-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and a 12-bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. The Texas Children’s Cancer Center, housed at the hospital, is one of the largest cancer research treatment centers in the country and includes a 36-bed inpatient unit and a 15-bed bone marrow transplant unit.

Our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has 76 beds and is supplemented by 62 Level II NICU beds for less critical babies. Furthermore, in concert with TCH’s ongoing $1.5 billion expansion effort and the opening of the new TCH Maternity Center in 2011, our NICU, and the opportunities it affords, will expand even further.

More than 40 medical and surgical outpatient services are available to children. TCH is renowned for its expertise and breakthrough development in the treatment of cancer, premature infants, cardiogenic disorders, diabetes, asthma, HIV/AIDS and attention-related dis-orders. Internationally recognized, the hospital is ranked in the top five among children’s hospitals by both Child magazine and U.S. News and World Report.

Since opening its doors in 1954, the Texas Children’s Hospital Integrated Delivery System has cared for more than 1 million children

from all corners of the globe. Our award-win-ning med i cal staff includes more than 1,580 board-certified, primary-care physi-cians, pediatric sub special ists, pedi atric-surgical subspecialists and den tists, in addi-tion to a highly skilled nursing and support staff of more than 6,000.

fellows to care for the otolaryngologic needs in this population of patients.

There is an active otologic component to the fellowship. The TCH Audiology Department logged over 6900 audiologic visits. The multi disciplinary Hearing Center clinic logged more than 700 outpatient encounters last year. Our service averages 30-50 cochlear implants per year.

Outpatient care is an important focus of fellowship education. Fellows have an independent, one half- day outpatient clinic session each week. Operative cases generated from these clinics are performed with the faculty member of the fellow’s choosing. While research is not required, for the interested fellow there are ample opportunities to pursue clinical research projects. With BCM, Texas Chil-dren’s participates in approximately 400 research projects and receives more NIH research funding than any other pediatric hospital in the nation. Pediatric Otolaryngology faculty and fellows have a long history of collaboration on projects with other services including Sleep Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Molecular Biology and other services.

Texas Children’s Hospital

Houston is known internationally as the home of one of the best medical communities in the world. That’s not surprising since the Texas Medical Center (TMC), the largest medical center in the world, is just 10 minutes from downtown Houston.

TMC is housed on 675 acres, and is home to 42 nonprofit and government institutions, including 13 teaching hospitals, two medical schools, four colleges of nursing, a dental college, a college of pharmacy and a college of optometry. Altogether 4.8 million patients visit them each year.

We select two fellows each year. The unified fellowship application is available on-line through the ASPO website, http://www.aspo.us, in the Fellowship Section. Our application deadline is mid-March each year. As you will see on the application, along with the application we require that you submit a resume (curriculum vitae), personal statement, and three letters of recommendation from physicians who have worked closely with you.

An interview is required and is considered based on your completed application and supporting materials. We usually have two on-site interview days in the spring each year. There is a welcome dinner the evening preceding each interview day so that applicants can meet the current faculty and fellows.

We participate in the San Francisco match program (www.sfmatch.org). The program is a subspecialty pro-gram and requires previous Otolaryngology training (minimum 5 years in length). The Fellowship requires a Postgraduate Physician Permit or Texas medical license to practice medicine in Texas.
