Why Forests Matter

12-15 million hectares of forest are lost every year

Two key causes of deforestation:

1. Conversion - wood fibre, palm & soy plus infrastructure

2. Degradation - fires, illegal & unsustainable logging, fuel

wood harvesting and climate change

This brings five key issues:

1. Reduced biodiversity

2. Release of Greenhouse gas emissions

3. Disruption of water cycles

4. Increased soil erosion & run off

5. Impacts on local communities

Certification offers a potential solution – PEFC and FSC

are the two global certification schemes 10
