Fall Horse Show Demo Days

Michele Arnhold Education Center Update

Through their charitable organization, The Arnhold Foundation, the family of former Pegasus volunteer Michele Arnhold has donated $2 million to Pegasus Therapeutic Riding to build the $1.5 million Michele Arnhold Education Center in Shelly’s memory, as well as create an endowment fund to support the future of our organization.

The Michele Arnhold Education Center will enable us to expand and diversify our programs, better integrate our educational programs into the barn environment, conduct industry-related workshops and certification courses, and host community events. It will also create a space for volunteers, families and friends to gather to observe program activities or just relax and enjoy their visit to the farm.

Construction began in February 2016, and the projected completion date is late winter 2017. Most of the exterior work has been completed, and the interior work is well underway. Once the Michele Arnhold Education Center is open, we will hold a celebration to honor the Arnhold family for their extraordinary gift celebrating Shelly’s life.

Due to the construction at Pegasus Farm, we did not hold our annual Pegasus Horse Show this year. Instead, we held a series of Horse Show Demo Days at each final lesson of fall program. Students proudly demonstrated their riding or unmounted horsemanship skills, and instructors awarded each participant a medal in recognition of his or her best skill. We saw lots of beaming smiles like Emma’s here! We also

acknowledged the incredible work of our volunteers, without whom we could not run our programs. Each participant gave his or her volunteer team flowers to thank them for their support and encouragement. Last but never least, participants thanked our irreplaceable therapeutic horses by leaving them an apple or carrot for dessert. Congratulations and thanks, one and all!

Unbridled Opportunities for the Future

The Pegasus Endowment Fund has been established to ensure that the mission and values most precious to us will be secured and preserved in Pegasus programs for years to come.

The purpose of the Pegasus Endowment Fund is program support.

Funds are invested in perpetuity to create a permanent source of income, a legacy that keeps giving.

There are many ways to make a gift to the Pegasus Endowment Fund, including: gifts of cash; planned gifts and bequests; appreciated assets, including stocks and bonds; publicly traded securities; real estate, tangible property and life insurance; retirement assets; or annuities.

Every legacy gift made to the Pegasus Endowment Fund through September 2017 will be matched—and doubled—by a gift from the Arnhold Foundation, up to $500,000.

We invite you to become a member of the Pegasus Legacy Circle and create our next 40 years of success. To learn how you can make and double your legacy gift today, contact Amy Price, Major Gifts and Endowment Officer at (845) 669-8235 x102 or [email protected], or visit pegasustr.org/endowment.

The Rider’s Closet Wish List

The Rider’s Closet is greatly in need of women’s paddock boots sizes 7-10, men’s paddock boots sizes 8-14, and children’s paddock boots sizes 10-5. We are very low and have a waiting list. To make a tax-deductible clothing donation (no helmets, please) or to request items, visit pegasustr.org/trc for info.

Pegasus at the Marine Corps Marathon We recently teamed up with fellow nonprofit Allied Forces Foundation to send runners to the Marine Corps Marathon on October 30 as a fundraiser for our developing veterans program. AFF is an all-volunteer British-American foundation established in 2008 to raise awareness and funding for allied wounded and their families affected by the conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan. Our liaison is AFF founder and chairman emeritus Major Stephen P. Cain, MBE, and we thank him for all his invaluable help and support.

Pegasus volunteer David Brett (above left) signed on as race team leader and spearheaded the fundraising efforts. David’s brother Nick Brett (above center), and fellow runners Allison Abriss (above right) and Kara Berardi (below) also joined our first-ever Pegasus Patriots Marine Corps Marathon team.

All four marathoners finished strong and were personally congratulated by Marines at the finish line. Known as “The People’s Marathon” the Marine Corps Marathon attracts many nonprofits and

families running for a cause. Thousands of wounded veterans ran or hand-biked alongside our Pegasus Patriots for 26.2 miles, as did people with special needs in wheelchairs, accompanied by their running partners. The experience was deeply moving and unforgettable, and we can’t wait to participate again next year. Congratulations and thank you, David, Nick, Allison and Kara!

Thank You, Annual Pegasus Donors!

Community Connections

Pegasus is very grateful for all our friends in the community, and our calendar was quite full this year. Event highlights include a visit from the Ridgefield Chamber of Commerce (above); special needs legal and financial planning workshops with Littman Krooks and Ameriprise; a Hudson Valley Renegades baseball game; the annual Mahopac-Carmel street fair; a private showing of Storks at Carmel Cinema; presentations at Southern Westchester BOCES SEPTA, Patterson Rotary and several other local organizations; a Danbury Titans hockey game; a visit from University of Bridgeport engineering students at our Ox Ridge chapter; and our annual pumpkin party. Whew, what a year!

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Pegasus funds more than 90% of our annual budget through charitable giving. This vital support allows us to keep our program fees low, which in turn gives as many families as possible the opportunity to participate. We are so incredibly thankful to all our annual fund donors for your support of our programs. Without you, we could not fulfill our mission for inspirational people like Chris (above).

If you are considering an annual fund gift to Pegasus, please contact Development Coordinator Kelly Gieg at [email protected] or (845) 669-8235 x110. To make an online gift, visit our donor web page at pegasustr.org/donate.

We LOVE Our Groups!

Our Summer Shindig Beat the Heat

Our Summer Shindig on Saturday, August 13, was a huge hit despite the very toasty weather. More than 100 guests enjoyed music, games, refreshing summer treats, tours, a

brief program demo, and interactive stories with the highly entertaining Story Pirates. Guests also watched our participants demonstrate how we give our horses a nice, cooling summertime bath!

Thank you again to everyone who attended, and to all staff, volunteers and vendors who helped make the day a success!

Spread the Word: Horses Wanted!

As our beautiful new barn nears completion, we are bringing additional therapeutic horses onto the team. The ideal Pegasus horse is: a mare or gelding between 13-16.1 hands and 9-15 years old; sound at the walk, trot and canter; tolerant and calm in temperament; and safe to ride in the ring and on trails. If you are interested in donating or free-leasing your horse to Pegasus, visit pegasustr.org/donate-horse for more information

or contact Equine Operations Manager Marielle Baker at [email protected] or (845) 669-8235 x112.

Thank You to Our Talented Video Team!

Pegasus is working on a number of promotional videos and has once again teamed up with accomplished cinematographers Erik Swain and Stephan Lemasson. As expected, the footage is breathtaking, and we can’t wait to share it with you. Stay tuned to our website and social media for upcoming premieres.

We want to take a moment to thank Erik (at right in photo) and Stephan (at middle in photo) for their fantastic work, including some amazing aerial drone shots of Pegasus Farm. We also want to thank the Pegasus families—especially participant “Mighty” Morgan (at left in photo)—staff members, volunteers, board members and Pegasus horses who have helped us capture our mission in action.

Calling All Fabulous Program Volunteers!

This past year, we have worked with Ability Beyond, ARC of Westchester, FCC Westchester’s ClubPT, Healing Hearts Center for Grief andLoss, North East Westchester SpecialRecreation (pictured above), Putnam ARC and St. Christopher’s Inc.

If you know of an organization that would enjoy partnering with Pegasus, contact Special Programs Coordinator Sophia Rosenbloom at [email protected] or (845) 669-8235 x105.
