Dear MembersHope you enjoyed the March weather which was quite hot and also the Easter break
It was a busy month with many highlights for our Juniorrsquos and Senior
Members Tom Fielding brought 12 Japanese Students to the club and
held a week long coaching camp which culminated in a match against
the Qld State Junior squad the match was halved Thanks to Tom
Fielding and all Members and staff for making them feel very welcome
Wild Kangaroos were the highlight of course
We were also fortunate to host the QAS National Golf Camp for Qld
players at the club during March Thanks to Grant Field Qld State Junior
Coach and Tony Meyer the Qld State Coach and National Coach along
with other National Coaches for considering our Club for the 2 day camp
We hope all players enjoyed the facilities
Over the Easter school break we held our PW Junior Classic and some
great scoring from the Juniors including 63 amp 64 nett scores 69 was the
Best male gross score and some great Par rounds -72 from the Girls
We hosted 103 Juniors which over the past 5 years has grown from 40
players in the inaugural year Thanks to all members for giving these kids
the opportunity to play our course
Commiseration to our Menrsquos Pennants side who went down 6-12 to
4-12 at home against Wantima in the Semi Final I know the guys are
disappointed however the camaraderie and sportsmanship was second
to none and thanks to all caddies and members who came out and
supported the team Thanks to Jackson Hopkins for his organisation of
the team At least you lost to the eventual winners Wantima who took out
the final last weekend against Caboolture
Itrsquos now our Ladies turn for Pennants and we wish them well in all 3
grades - Good luck Ladies and hope you bring home the spoils over the
next couple of months
The Masters is on our TVrsquos this weekend and so is our PW Masters this
Sunday We are low on numbers and would love to see more of you
playing Remember this is an honour board event and Ian Henderson has
picked a great menu for the dinner afterwards
I look forward to seeing you at the club

If you havenrsquot got one in your bag you should seriously consider replacing your three or four iron with oneLPGA Tour player Paula Creamer ranks third in Greens in Regulation (742) and she attributes much of this to her set of hybrids Depending on the course shersquos playing she will carry up to three hybrids in her bag and never an iron longer than a five iron The key to hitting a hybrid is to hit down on it like an iron so you make a small divot in front of the ball It can also be easy to shape the hybrid as some people may disagreeThe following is how Paula hits her hybrids
STANDARD HYBRID Although the hybrid looks like a fairway wood think of it more like an iron because the club shaft length is only slightly longer than the equivalent iron Play the ball slightly forward than the middle of your stance like you would a long iron and your hands should be in line with the ball After yoursquove taken the club back make sure you focus on making a descending blow and finish with your hands high and weight on the left leg
LOW HYBRID DRAW To hit a low draw set up with the ball slightly back of centre weight forward and stance closed Notice in the picture the slight shaft lean forward which de-lofts the club for a lower trajectory The key point for a draw is to swing around your body to make an in-to-out swing path and finish with your hands lower than your normal swing
HIGH HYBRID FADE The hold off fade is a great shot to have in the bag Set up should be similar to the standard swing but stance is open (aligned to the left) and slightly wider As she hits through the ball Paula thinks of keeping her right arm from turning over her left and tries to keep the face open You could experiment on the range with this by also holding the club with your left hand (top hand) tighter as you move through impact In the picture above you can see her chest has finished high but she hasnrsquot released the club Reference golfdigestcom

One of the better and more recent innovations to the game is the hybrid Great for long approach shots as they can fly higher through the air and stop quickly on the greens or be able to ldquorescuerdquo you from the rough back onto the fairway

I would also like to wish all of our Ladies Pennant teams the best of luck as they each begin their Pennant seasons this week As prior years this year will be extremely competitive and every match is sure to come down to the wire Please come out and support the Ladies Open Side at Pelican Waters next Monday April 11th ndash teeing off from 8am

Player numbers
With the favourable weather conditions to start the 2016 year we have seen a growth in members rounds compared to the 2015 year ndash 6329 rounds compared to 6126 between January and March 2015 With this in mind it is essential that the course is maintained to the high level that we all expect and enjoy Please make sure all divots and pitch marks are repaired (even if they arenrsquot yours) as well as ensuring bunkers are raked thoroughly ndash ultimately creating an enjoyable on-course experience for all players time and time again

Around the greens
The machines will be working hard over the next couple of
weeks to get it under control again (especially the rough)
In February we received showers on 15 days out of the
month A total of 101mm of rainfall was recorded
At the start of the month we completed the application of
pre-emergent herbicide to minimise the germination of
Winter Grass We have commenced spot spraying of all
other foreign grasses with a post emergent herbicide
All greens and tees have been sprayed with an insecticide
called Acelepryn This product will protect the grass from
lawn grubs as they can be quite prevalent leading into
winter Acelepryn has a residual component which can
last for up to six months
Cabomba Water Weed in the lake system continues to
multiply with the warmer temperatures we have been
receiving All areas are monitored and prioritized as to
when they receive a herbicide application
In the photo you can see worm castings on the 18th green
Casting occurs when worms deposit processed matter as
small mounds on the surface of the turf Although worms
are of great benefit to the soil excessive casts are a
problem as they can affect ball roll and effect equipment
Hi MembersWith Easter coming early this year and the public holidays making short weeks it was difficult for the maintenance crew to keep up with the growth of the grass

I recently received an email newsletter from one of my favourite market commentators Peter Thornhill from Motivated Money Peterrsquos message has not changed in the 15 years I have been following him Invest in quality industrial (ie non resources) shares for a growing dividend stream and growing asset value Peterrsquos belief is that your primary risk as a retiree is not the day to day volatility of the sharemarket not the risk of losing money but the risk of outliving it He points out that when you chart the monthly movements of the sharemarket it is quite volatile However when you chart it by plotting the closing value at each year end as if the sharemarket had only opened one day each year it is not that volatile at all ndash it is almost a straight line upwards All the noise of the day to day movements is just useless chatter unless you are a chartist uselessly trying to pick out lsquodouble topsrsquo and lsquohead and shouldersrsquoWith a portfolio of industrial shares it is possible to meet your immediate spending needs through dividends alone without the need to sell assets thus maintaining the original capital Over time a dividend stream can grow substantially outweighing the effects of inflation Thornhill retired in 20072008 and moved from reinvesting all his dividends to taking them as cash to fund his living expenses Although through the GFC it was painful watching the paper value of his share investments halve in value his income only fell by 20 However his strategy of holding two years living expenses in cash paid off and he didnrsquot need to sell anything That strategy also provided opportunity as he was able to take advantage of low prices to top up his holdings As an example in 2008 he purchased Commonwealth Bank shares at $26 Since then it has
paid $2129 in dividends or 80 of the purchase price In addition the shares are worth approximately 3 times what he paid for them He makes his point by comparing $100000 invested in term deposits back in 1980 It would still be worth $100000 now (really a lot less after the effect of inflation) and the income of about $14000 would now be $3000 based on current interest rates A portfolio of industrial shares would be yielding $80000 and be worth $18 million Itrsquos hard not to be persuaded by his argumentBy focussing only on the income and not the prices of our shares he avoided much of the angst associated with the GFC Also as life expectancy has increased with medical and lifestyle advances he is ensuring the asset base remains intact and the income stream continues to grow for decades to come Over the years many people have been reduced to living totally on the old age pension because they had initially relied on bank deposits in what they thought was the lsquosafersquo option In fact this proved to be the riskiest option as investors have outlived their funds Personally I have always invested in shares I know also that as I get older I wonrsquot be moving to term deposits I will always invest in the safety of shares And Irsquoll be better off for it You can subscribe to Peter Thornhillrsquos emails at wwwmotivated moneycomau

The machines will be working hard over the next couple of

In February we received showers on 15 days out of the
